Hi Everyone and Welcome Back to My Bucolic Life Channel. Meet my new sewing project.
These pants.... OK so the pattern design isn't too bad. BUT WHAT ARE THEY THINKING WITH THE INSTRUCTIONS!!??! So I am not pleased at all with this new thing of leaving out key instructions hoping that we will go scan a code and watch a video instead. Just saying (over and over actually) Lots going on here with a lot of fly with alterations, welted pockets and such. And then I go and over indulge, you now how it is, and I am pretty sure I will be letting the waistband out a bit. I'll show that on a short video extra later (Hahahaha) Thanks for watching!
    ~Marie

Lisa here, not Darryl. I agree about the ditto. It's expensive and complicated. Give me a $1.99 pattern any day. I saw a video on YT recently, where the young woman investigated Joann Fabrics' corporate members, board members, and current financial situation. As she pointed out, none of the people running Joann's looks like they have ANY idea what crafters would want. They should ask the sewing community. I have a couple simple suggestions: fabric needs to be between $6 and $10 for the most part, and put mirrors throughout the store so we can hold the fabric up next to our faces. You did a beautiful job on the pants, Marie.

This content of you teaching the correct way of putting in a fly is golden! I would love more videos like this. You are an amazing teacher!❤ this is what that pattern needs to be linked to IMO❣️

I think your pants are perfect. I like it that the pleats are a litlle open around the hips and not the baggy look. Also, i totally agree with your opinion about the videos in the instructions! In 20 years when our granddaughters' open that pattern and all the technology is completely different, it will be a disaster!

The trousers look brilliant, Marie! 🤩
I am shocked that the "big 4" (or 5, or 1, whatever you want to call them) have pared down their already scant instructions 😱. It doesn't seem like you get much for your money these days. Independent designers' patterns are a bit more expensive, but they hold your hand step by step so even a relatively inexperienced sewist can understand and follow along. To skip the instructions for a fly front zip fastening is unbelievable! Good thing you've got your books and you know what you're doing. Anyway, the pumpkin festival sounds like a lot of fun, and you'll look fabulous in your lovely new trousers 👍 Enjoy!

I love your tips! And I agree! They should have a video and a diagram! I imagine they thought that a video would be good for newbie sewers, and veterans like yourself would know what to do. But I totally agree with your point about them keeping their video links up forever... Not likely! Then what are people supposed to do?!
I'm a newbie sewer, and I'll definitely complain if I get a sewing pattern without diagrams. I don't want to look up a video everytime I sew a pattern, AND I spend hours tracing mine out so that I can keep using them for years if I change sizes... what a waste of time if in a few year I can't access their videos!

Hello Marie, The pants look great on you. I agree with you about the way they are skipping on the instructions. I've got more annoyed with the 'big 4' these last 2 years. The patterns designs are getting all samey, too many are just repeats with slight tweaks and the quality of instructions is getting worse. I still use some of my 80's and 90's patterns and even though the designs were more complicated to sew, the instructions are so much more detailed that they walk you through the difficult bits easily.

The pants came out great, you sure can sew. I’ve become very partial to the new stretch pull on pants these days. No fly, no button. I had those 80’s pants , loved them then….at 117 pounds. I’m hourglass like you, and not 117! Fabulous tutorials always, Marie.❤

I agree with you about the lack of instructions with patterns. The projection system is out of the question for me- no money, or space, for it, and I doubt I would understand it! I like to read directions for anything. The pdf patterns are also a no-go because printer ink is so expensive, and my printer uses it up quickly. I buy patterns for 25 cents at thrift stores!

Nah, it’s not just you. I remember the pants from the 80’s too. 😂
Was it just me or did those instructions seem overly complicated? Maybe it was just because of those stupid videos. I don’t like that idea either. If i have paper instructions in front of me, i want the instructions to be written on them. If there is _also_ a how to video, fine. But there shouldn’t be a video instead of being written on the instruction page.
    Hook and bar 😊
Nice pants though. There was something nice about the side pockets and i like the centre facing pleats.
The colour is wonderful for a fall festival 🍁 i hope you enjoy all your upcoming events.

Hi Marie from the UK. Once again a brilliant sew and a fabulous pair of trousers. I'm hoping that the pattern instructions or should I say lack of key instructions is not a sign of things to come because I personally like my instructions in print for me to read as many times as I need too. ❤

I'll be at the EXPO on Friday. I hate the way they do directions. I hate messing with the internet. What about people who can't get internet at home? I know most people can, but some out in very rural or small town rural don't. I guess this saves the company a piece of paper. Thanks for another great video. You know I love how you explain and go through the whole process of the make. Love these.

Hi Marie! These trousers turned out to fit nicely and I love the fabric. The big 4 or 5 patterns have frustrated me for about a year now with sizing, instructions and the fast-fashion feel. The instructions and the omission of finished garment sizing on the envelope is my pet peeve. I stopped going 25 miles to my local JA store because I had to open the actual pattern to see the finished garment sizing. Enough already with the changes and I do believe many are frustrated with the the direction the pattern drafting is going. Seems as if the price increased and we received less instructions or they are completely missing🤣. Ok, that’s my rant😂😂😂 Thanks for sharing another great vlog❤

I agree with you Marie. They should keep directions on paper and not in the clouds. There are many people who do not have internet or a computer. Some by choice and others it is not available. Come on big "4" get with it. It is a good idea to have a good sewing book. I have some very old ones that I consult. Many times the methods they use give your a much nicer finish than some of the modern ones and vice versa. Really old patterns are rather sketchy also. They assumed you knew how to sew back then. Independent pattern companies do unusually give great instructions but not all. Sewing is such a great skill to have. After over 50 years of sewing I'm still learning and loving every new thing I discover. I do enjoy watching your channel.

I also like high waisted style for my shape too. Your pants look great, an ageless style it seems. I totally agree with you regarding the instructions being all together on the paper. Watching instructions on a small mobile phone screen is just not acceptable I feel and a bit of a phaf. If they want to introduce a digital instruction method then just make it an option but leave the paper instruction intact as well.

So glad your new little one is adjusting and starting to relax. Im sure she will realize the love you offer and love you right back. I was working on a mens pattern and they just didnt give enough info. If you had made things you would know how, but someone newer to sewing would have had a hard time. And it didnt offer a link. Maybe you just go to the website and look? Anyway, its so sad. I feel like i need to say...in the old days the put instructions with the pattern. Lol i do wish the finish sizes were on the outside of the packaging. Anyway...hope you enjoyed the pumpkins! Your pants turned out great, thanks!

Yes, I completely agree with you re: the Ditto system. I also don't know anyone who has purchased (key word) out of pocket for that system either. Makes garment sewing way too expensive when you've factored in the cost of the projector, the subscription cost, the pattern, and fabric. Fabric is expensive enough and the Big 4 paper patterns (when not on sale) are ridiculously expensive. Even with the Ditto system on currently on sale for $599, it's still too expensive for most sewists. Then, those sewists that like to make a top or dress now and then won't invest in the system at all. Indie pattern companies will, no doubt, profit from this business debacle and heads will eventually roll because of its failure to produce profit. I firmly believe that JoAnn's will try to force the Ditto system on their consumers by discontinuing to sell paper patterns, which would be a HUGE mistake that will transfer over to decline in garment fabric. Online garment fabric companies will profit from this also because JoAnn's will be forced to raise the price of their garment fabric, which is too expensive now. In the past several decades, Singer hasn't made the best of business decisions, IMO. Their sewing machines aren't as good as they once were a long time ago. Too many poorly made models made of cheap plastic. Same problem that car manufacturer GM had for a long time, and those cars proved to be junk also. Makes me wonder how much longer Singer will continue to survive and if JoAnn's is on the same path of financial ruin.

Maybe we could all come together and give our 2 cents with customer support. I am in complete disagreement with the way they are taking important instructions out of the patterns. There are still so many who do not want to resort to anything online. What if someone had limited data and boom you have just ran out of data and need to wait until it renews the next cycle. I understand change can be good but this is not one of them. I don’t know if they are trying to save paper or what but I’m just so upset about it. My husband has had to hear all of my rants concerning this matter. He’s a trooper.
And yes same here, ditto has not sold much around here where I am located. I did look into it out of curiosity thinking it was a cool device to aid in tracing out my own pattern as I don’t like cutting into some of them due to their age. But…nope. You have to use their online source of selected patterns and if you ask me they are a bit outdated.
I really like the pants. They look fun and so comfy. Beautiful fabric and perfect for a pumpkin filled fun day 😊

Regarding the lack of instructions for a fly zipper. Even if the instructions are in the accompanying video accessed by following the link, then there should be a note to indicate this. This is a major proof reading error.
