He was recommended for Bharat Ratna but he refused the offer saying that since he is without peer, he cannot accept something that has been given to others too. Hence, they gave him an award called Aftab-e-Sitar.
This music was created when I was below one year age. Actually I was trying to hear Raga Khambaj which were played by respected musicians at my age of below one or before my birth. I am surprised to see how rich how beautiful those musics were that we cannot play those standard of music even after 55 years of their creation. Thank you for giving us opportunity to hear the great musics.
Ustad Vilayat Khan, no doubt, was the best Sitar player, in India. Rais Khan who migrated to Pakistan was also a good sitar player. Madan Mohan always used Ustad Rais Khan to play sitar in his compositions.
Rais Khan was refuted all Muslim artistes like Amjad Ali Khan and others for exppressing his dirty mind stating Muslim artists were neglected in India.
What a beautiful rendition of the raga, so much melody in each note he plays. Probably the Ustad at his peak. Almost felt like he was talking to the individual swaras and putting them together in this uniquely creative endevour. Esp between 4:47 to 4:51, were he splashes the teevra Madhyam just for a fraction of a second. Building an emotional experience for us to enjoy after so many years.
Thank you for your lovely post. Yes, that fleeting glimpse of the deviant note of teevra madhyam adds to the beauty. He was a singer at heart. And whatever crossed his musically fertile mind, magically appeared on his fingertips. The skill that he demonstrates, while playing this instrument, is matchless, IMHO.
Clarity of Khan Sahib’s notes is incredible. Khan sahib playing for almighty one can feel clear connection between music and God
واہ واہ واہ۔۔۔ بہت ھائی کلاس کی playing کی گئی ھے۔۔ طبیعت شاد باد ھو گئی ھے۔۔ سبحان اللّٰہ۔
The maestro and his midas' touch. We can only be mesmerized, nothing else.🙏
India me jitna sitarist hai inka jaise alap koi nahi Hai. He was also deserve for Bharat Ratna.

@Satam2011 no those were Padma Shri and Padma Bhushan that he turned down. Not Bharat Ratna

This is the Khamaj LP in the music of India series, one of the first LPs. A veritable gem.
this was on the 1962 vinyl "Genius of Vilayat Khan" Khamaj Thumri - absolutely amazing.
Pure bliss!

Tabla blew my mind away..... pranam pandit ji
I agree. What an assertive yet finesse-filled 'sangat'.
I am addicted to Ustad ji.
So am I
Khan Sahab was at his zenith in the 60s. Incredible!
In the middle of the 4:35-4:55 section, the Ustad inserts a surprise nugget of indescribable beauty!
He was such a wizard in springing up an unexpected note/phrase on a raag that offered flexibility. An amazing artist.
Magnificent.
This was Vilayat in his prime.
Rythemic Tabla by Legendary Pt.Samta prasad.
Yes, thanks. I have mentioned that in the description of this clip.
This duo simply had no peers.
