Season 4 sets it up that Serena will either be killed or become a handmaid at the conclusion of the series. Remember when Mrs. Putnam visited her and offered to take in the baby? This was a subtle reminder that Gilead was not willing to give the Waterford's a second chance, that their child belonged to the state since they were traitors to the regime...and we see and hear this message loud and clear when Nick and the higher ups of Gilead allow June and former handmaids to execute Fred. I love how season 4 brought the life the details of the epilogue, how Fred was killed in a purge--though in the epilogue of the book, it is mentioned that Gilead cleaned house on all commanders who were committing crimes behind the regimes back. However. Fred was sentenced to death by Gilead so I guess the set up was the same.
