  • The good and bad about minidisk. What started out as a seemingly simple repair endd up being a much more serious problem.

    I use my two MiniDisc players (Sony MDS-JE520 & MDS-JE330) almost every day and I'm very happy with the sound quality and easy use. They use ATRAC version 4.5 which is one of the last common versions with much improved sound quality.😊

    I have a Sony MZ-RH1. Of course with a defect gum battery. Also it just reboots when being touched on slightly. And it goes into recording protect now and then. There are software that works connecting it to Windows 11 to transfer files. This format was really dead on stable to save recordings for future use, but now I dont really know. I did never ever experienced any read errors from this format, even before I went to HI-MD, and did not experienced any read errors after this.

    This was a cool format, and was a lot more reliable than CD-Rs ended up being. It's too bad the portable players are mostly the typical delicate 90s electronics full of tiny fiddly unobtainium moving parts that are basically unfixable outside their probably 3-5 year design life. I had a Sony portable that died around the time iPods were getting big, and anyone I talked to who was qualified to fix it basically shrugged their shoulders regarding repair (ie just throw it in the trash and buy an iPod). I had a bunch of recordings I made off the radio in the US, Canada, and parts of Europe and if they still exist they're probably rotting a box in one of my relatives' basement.
    The prerecorded discs had the audio data pressed in and were read with the laser, just like a tiny CD. They were pretty hard to find here, I occasionally saw them at the big record stores in downtown Toronto but nowhere else.

      @12voltvids  Рік тому

      Believe it or not, I somehow misplaced a box full of MDs on top of an old outdoor freezer. Two or three years later I found them wet and dirty in the box. Thinking they would be toast, I went ahead and brought them in to dry. Then dusted them off. To my surprise, they all worked perfectly! So don't give up on your old MDs. Some of the pre-recorded ones are worth a fortune too!

    Hi love your vids, just a small question, i never had any luck with Minidisc players as they all seem to break down on me. Most of Sony ones that broke down on me has the same issue. The standby red led is lit and nothing happens. I cannot insert a disc or eject and doesn't power on. About an year ago i got myself yet another Sony MDS-JE520. Was working great and the sound quality was as almost good as my Sony DAT. This one suffered the same fate, red light on and nothing happens. I did some reading you can enter to a diagnostic section by pressing down the enter button and it sure does light up the display for bunch of inbuilt diagnostic options. However, after exiting from that, still the same thing. Can please give me your thoughts on what could be the issue? One person said the micro processor is fried. Could that be the case? Your input on this is highly appreciated. Look forward to hearing from you soon. Cheers

    Looking at the size difference is the reason I almost got on the MD train. The size and weight of the first MD players were huge and the audio quality was worse than CDs. Newer units got smaller and the audio quality got close to raw digital. Portable CD players were large and prone to skipping. MD players had great shock protection. Metal cassettes on my Sony walkman performed really well, but it got real tempting towards the time that JVC one was made. MP3s killed that plan.
