Dude you're so blessed to have started music in 2018ish and be where you are! I've been making music since I was 12 in 2002 lmao. I didn't get "good" until maybe about 2008-2010- but I'm still nowhere close to you in terms of "notoriety" although I'm just grateful to have a honed craft either way!! I only make music for my self liberation and to affect others at the end of the day anyway, we'll see what fappens

i listed to plastic beach in 7th grade and it was the first time i bought an album and listed to it front to back and fell in love with it. i found it through a live version of to binge on youtube, so good!
Really cool that you mentioned Balance and Composure, they're a really underrated band from that. I was fortunate enough to see them with La Dispute, Touché Amoré, and Make Do and Mend. I think about that show a lot.
Here’s my music taste evolution:
Kindergarten - 4th grade (2008 - 2013)
Mostly influenced by my siblings and parents
We had mainstream pop acts like Lady Gaga, Kesha, Katy Perry, Gwen Stefani, Taylor Swift, Avril Lavigne, Kyary Pamyu Pamyu, and Nicki Minaj
We also had my oldest sister influencing my like for bands and artists such as Evanescence, Flyleaf, Garbage, Rob Zombie, Marilyn Manson, and The Birthday Massacre
We then had my mom’s influence with acts such as Sinead O’Connor, Enya, Kate Bush, The Cure, Siouxsie & The Banshees, and Concrete Blonde
4th grade - 6th grade (2013 - 2015)
It was mostly the same stuff but I started to get a little bit more into metal and hard rock music such as In This Moment (who I still love), Halestorm, The Pretty Reckless, Three Days Grace, and Slipknot
End of 6th grade - 9th grade (2015 - 2018)
This was my long lasting and very cringey emo phase where I thought I was listening to high art and mainstream pop was all trash.
It all started with the discovery of THE Melanie Martinez (who I still like) who I quickly became obsessed with, I then dug down the rabbit hole and became engrossed in Halsey, Florence + the Machine, MARINA, Lana Del Rey, PVRIS, and Twenty One Pilots
I then quickly started descending into more traditional emo music and became obsessed with MCR, FOB, P!ATD, Falling in Reverse, Motionless in white (I still kinda listen to them), and even the dreaded BOTDF
10th grade - 11th grade (2018 - 2019)
I kinda started getting more into mainstream pop music like Ariana Grande and I also still continued to adore the Melanie Martinez, Halsey, And Lana camps of music...which led me to Billie Eilish who listened to for a hot minute right before she blew up (I stopped listening to her, I really don’t like her anymore)
I also started getting into a lot more rap such as Rico Nasty, Megan Thee Stallion, and Doja Cat
But ultimately....I felt like I was missing something in music...kind of a lack of interest
Until
Very End of 11th grade - post graduation (2020 - now)
During my emo phase...I came across Poppy...I loved her at the time...but looking back, I never truly appreciated her music in the same way I do now....but she had a song in 2018 called Play Destroy featuring a little artist I have never heard of before and never bothered to listen to until the day after 11th grade ended. A little video popped up in my recommended....and I haven’t looked at music the same since...that video...was Kill V. Maim by Grimes. Ever since, I’ve been completely engrossed and obsessed, I’ve listened to every Grimes album since and I’ve dug deeper into the more experimental artists and started to appreciate Poppy and Jazmin Bean more (two experimental I’ve listened to but haven’t truly appreciated).
I quickly fell down the rabbit hole of SOPHIE, Arca, Dorian Electra, 100 Gecs, Aphex Twin, FKA twigs, Yeule, Alice Glass, Charli XCX, Rina Sawayama, Slayyyter, COBRAH, Shygirl, Alice Longyu Gao, Chase Icon, Lil Mariko, Lil Texas, Bree Runway, Chester Lockhart, HANA, Brooke Candy, Cecile Believe, Zheani, Coa White, Ashnikko, Night Club, Kim Petras, Kero Kero Bonito, Caroline Polachek, Pussy Riot, Edith Underground, Ethel Cain, REZZ, and Sidewalks and Skeletons.
As you can infer, I’m no longer allowed near the aux chord

I have actually listened to/encountered nearly all the artists you mentioned in a similar order during the same periods of my life its actually weird, and nature walks are like the best way to listen to a new album
My “bin of random songs” playlist on my channel has a lot of my recommendations. Cool video, I can relate to most, I only had my MCR phase in 3rd grade.

In middle school and high school I listened to Maroon 5, Evanescence, Linkin Park, Chevelle, Train, Bryan Adams, 38 Special, Boston, Reo Speedwagon, Journey, Bon Jovi, Phil Collins, and Chicago, plus a lot of other 70’s/80’s music. I still like it, but that music definitely has lost its replay value
In middle school I actually somehow enjoyed AJR, I feel so ashamed 😔😔

You probably already received a bunch of recommendations in this thread by now, but if you're into experimental stuff, I'd recommend CLIPPING (any of their albums), EXTRA LIFE (Seed Dreams is my favorite album from them), XIU XIU (Angel Guts: Red Classroom is my personal favorite but all other projects are amazing too). And just because you strike me as someone that may appreciate it, Hyper Light Drifter by Disasterpeace, one of the most beautiful video game music scores I've ever heard. You nailed a LOT of my personal favorites in your list, by the way!

With the context of the lyrics, the performance, and her passing, listening to Faceshopping by SOPHIE is now a viscerally emotional experience for me.
This is such a fun video, but it makes me so happy I’ve stuck to making annual playlists. Since 2013 I add any songs I like to the playlist, and listen to the entire thing on New Year’s Eve. The sheer variety of music on it is kind of silly at this point, but it’s really fun to look back at even if I don’t like some of the music as much as I used to.
The albums/EPs that stand out to me are:
Beat Tapes 2 - Tom misch (j dilla and John mayer combined? It’s got nice pocket is all I’m saying)
Like What - Tennyson (electronic jazz is great and their production is incredible)
Bring backs - alfa mist (jazz infused hip hop, really nice composition)
Wallflower - Jordan Rakei (all of his albums are great, with a different sound for each one, neo soul I guess is the best definition?)
Jacob collier (I’m not recommending an entire album but his discography is a mixture of insanely complicated and extremely fun music. The guy is superhuman at music)
Turbo - Cory wong and dirty loops (fusion funk with one of the tightest bands on earth)

21 Pilots live show while they were still coming up made me a lifetime fan. They performed outside in a blizzard wearing tank tops and ski masks. Top 5 live performance.
I recommend Quadeca’s From Me To You, it’s a rap album but it’s super experimental and ambitious

oh man... I discovered MCR early last year and that was all i listened to. And i had a bit of an emo phase, style wise. I got concert tickets last november and I finally saw them this October :,) it was amazing. I got *slightly* less obsessed earlier this year but then when they released a new song in may, i became an even bigger stan than i was last year!! i'm totally obsessed with them again, the black parade is my fav album

Your Arcade Fire story reminded of the first time I heard Kids. It was on the radio in the car but the radio display was delayed/ not updated so it showed “Let’s Talk About Sex” by Salt-N-Pepa, which obviously wasn’t correct. Wasn’t until months/ nearly a year later I was watching The Secret Life of the American Teenager and Kids played in the credits, thankfully Much Music (Canadian MTV) showed what song was playing and I was so damn excited I finally found the song. Very interesting video. Obviously, your taste is very different than mine (cos mine isn't very cool or up-to-date), because you're like a decade younger or so. Had I grown up with youtube and streaming (I grew up with radio, tapes and then along came mp3s, but it was super slow), things would look very different.
Sadly, I don't have anyone to talk to when it comes to music. Because talking about music is difficult and I'm probably very nerdy with music, I listen to a lot of stuff and also not-so-mainstream suff and even some older artists.
I cannot give you an exact timeline. At first, I started to listen to the radio and the weekly top 20 radio show. I liked like 70 % of the songs or so. It was obviously pop music with a bit of rap and few rock and also some "EDM" (that's always tricky to explain, it was mid-to-end-90s like Sash!, Scooter, Dario G, Alice Deejay, Darude, Eiffel 65 stuff) or commercial dance music / hands up. Until this very day, my 3 pillars of music are: "Pop", Trance/Hands Up and German Hip Hop. That didn't change although I'm listening to a lot of other stuff as well and I the broadth of my taste makes listening to music never boring.
From the early 2000s, I was watching MTV and similar music video stations and got access to commercial compilations and MP3s. It was a lot Italo-Dance, Comercial Dance. I still liked the majority of the radio/chart songs. Mid 2000s, I got into Trance (like A State of Trance, Trance Around The World, Global DJ Broadcast) because commercial dance had changed so much I didn't enjoy it anymore. Also got into tons of artists at that time, Radiohead, Björk, Portishead, Interpol, Editors, Deftones. Linkin Park was the first rock act I liked back in 2000 (but it was Rap-Rock, which is a bit different). Also liked Norah Jones, Katie Melua, Ben Folds (Five), Eva Cassidy, Zero 7, Belle and Sebastian, Sarah McLachlan etc.
At that time, I also got into "older" stuff below the starting point of my listening experience (before the 1990s). That is also important to me. Yes, limited time and stuff, but still I'm happy that I have decent DECADES playlists on spotify now. Don't listen to these songs too often but I like listening to the old songs as well.
These days, I'm following a lott of artists from my past. But I'm also totally into "modern" "Indie Pop" stuff. It's not the boring radio stuff, it's obviously pop with a lot of vocals but the productions are great. Almost two years ago, I got late to the party and disovered my favourite modern artist Benee. Love her music. Also am into Clairo, mxmtoon, some Sigrid, Sycco, Hope Tala and of course many more that I didn't find the time to check out. With time, I will find more good ones. The rest are the blasts from the past and also recent modern Trance stuff. It doesn't get boring. 25 years of excessive music listening gave me tons of great songs. It's already way too much. So I basically don't need recommandations but I add the top 5 from an artists I hear and listen to them at one point in the future.
It's honestly hard to say which artists I really like because with decades long careers they had great and not so good phases. Deftones, Dido, Coldplay, Travis, Keane, Trespassers William, the folk-pop stuff of Taylor Swift, Ani DiFranco, City Girl, London Grammar, The Cure, Astrud Gilberto, Sade, Nick Drake, The Cranberries, Hello Meteor to name just a few more that I really enjoy.

In my case, I feel I have never stop liking music but just expanding my taste more and more (well maybe things like Pantera, Avenged Sevenfold, Bullet for my valentine and other alt. metal stuff I used to listen in 5-6 grade and now I dont). Totally agree on Youth by Citizen, really angsty but so goood.
