Though there could be some water but there is another reaction of benzylic acid with a chlorine on the adjacent carbon ... rather than taking a H+ at the carbanion step , it forms triple bond when Cl- leaves due to unavailability of water ... and plenty heat is there for stabilisation of the unstable species .... that triple bond ring dimerizes afterwards... So how do we know when does dehydration takes place and when not

Sir i go to allen but in my module the reaction mechanism is different. OH- from NaOH attacks on RCOONa and forms R- and NaHCO3.Now R- attacks on H of Nahco3 and forms RH. So according to them the H is not from H2O it is from NaOH. Please reply sir.

OH- from NaOH attacks on RCOONa and forms R- and NaHCO3.Now R- attacks on H of Nahco3 and forms RH.
So according to them the H is not from H2O it is from NaOH.
