Rc is very much like life, sometimes things go perfectly, other times it kicks you in the balls and then proceeds to curb stomp you while you are laying on the ground. This video is a perfect example of when the rc hobby decides it doesn't like you. You just have to reason with it until it does, at which point both you and the rc hobby will be much happier.

I've never seen a gas car wear out. Most people give up on them long before then. 20 minutes of fighting with an engine that was already broken in and then the excuses that you have to make up to convince yourself not to give up on it when in reality, that's about the best that it will ever run. Been there.

Mine was shutting off on jumps like that before I sold it. Between that and it being louder than I expected I didn't stick it out long enough to solve the issue. Loved the platform though.

Yes It does have a learning curve to it but the one thing I can add is the 17/20 hour settings are break in settings need to lean that high speed out ALSO check your gas filter inside the tank in shipping mine was wedged up higher then it should be also the stalling will stop there is a fine line between to lean and to rich good luck IT IS WORTH THE PATIENCE

Hey Medic, What I and others have found is to set the needles at 15 and 30 works great tons of power with the temps in control. I hope to have my running and tuning videos up soon on this truck with all that we have learned about this truck so far.

Hi there!! Congratulation for the nice video! I have had the lst 2 XXL since August this year. I would like to share my thought and experience with you. Get ready it's gonna be long!!
The positive: quite powerful engine, fairly robust chassis, gasoline fuel gives nice feeling
The negatives (after having followed the break in instructions and three months of experience on this truck)):
    1. the .31 gasoline engine is very sensitive to weather conditions (temp., external pressure, etc.). Consequence: the carb has to be fine tuned on each and any run (ok no news, but it is a quite long process every time). Furthermore it needs to be warmed up not only to get the most out it, but also to make it "a bit " more stable during the run. Otherwise the engine turns off after a very short while. A heat-gun would be required to warm it up preventively. The funny part of it is that if the engine gets a bit too hot (>115°C), it turn off as well and you need to wait at least 10 min to let it cool. In summary the temp window for the engine to be stable and powerful is in my opinion extremely narrow and it must fit the user's nerves! P.S. I do not believe I made a bad engine break in, because when all these conditions are met (proper carb tuning and engine temp), the truck is a real monster, but it last too short and does not stand strong landing after moderate jumps (I would have an explanation for that further on)!!
    2. The truck systematically dies when landing after relatively high jumps or if it remains flipped over for more than ~5 seconds. What happens in my opinion is that the engine gets too easily flooded. In order to run smoothly the engines seems to require a constant flux of fuel mixture at a very constant air to fuel ratio (which is virtually impossible, that's why it is so unstable), otherwise the engine shut off immediately. Try for instance to move the high or low speed needles by hardly one hour only while the engine is running. Almost immediately after the adjustment the engine dies. Then it starts again, but not immediately! You need to pay some turns of the rotor, then it goes again. In essence this engine cannot at all handle fluctuations of the fuel mixture.
    3. To my knowledge the engine requires uniquely the spark plug from Dynamite. Being a non standard plug it costs more than those for a bigger 2 strokes gasoline engines and it is less available from the dealers. I am from Switzerland in Europe and had to make a huge effort to procure my self enough spark plugs spares, without spending a fortune in delivery costs! ...and had to wait weeks to get them! Furthermore, the spark is not that strong as well. So far I had to replace 3 sparks after about 10 Liters of fuels. I would expect this for glow plugs not for spark plugs! For instance, once a spark was defecting. It leaked just a bit, so that the pressure in the combustion chamber was not kept! I took me two or three days to realize it! I understood it only when I saw some burnt oil on the spark top and inside the ignition pipe. Very frustrating.....
    4. The clutch: the truck came with ridiculous clutch pads. I had to replace them right after the break-in, as they were completely worn out. I mean the truck was not moving at all. After replacing the clutch pads with some stronger non-Dynamite items the truck was ready to go again!
    5. The AVC is cool, but it is not really necessary in my opinion. Plus the radio included in the package is not really capable of handle it. I bought an extra radio namely the Spectrum DX4C (I love it!!) to manage the AVC. With this radio I can much much better adjust the sensitivity of the AVC, and can turn it off without using the plug or switching off the engine. Much more convenient. Moreover I got a spare AVC receiver, which is included in the radio package.
Summary: This is a quite powerful truck. As long as it runs it will give you a real blast....but only as long as it runs!! I cannot at all confirm what it is communicated by Losi i.e. less maintenance low costs due to the gasoline. So far I used the oil from Dynamite. But I will test some standard 2 strokes engine oil. I believe it's gonna work. If it won't I will probably trash the truck (not even resell it, I would feel ashamed), or more realistically, I will replace the engine to a nitro!!!
Message to Losi/Dynamite: to date this engine is an head hake to me. It required some more development of the ignition system as well as of the fuel injection system. At least please lower the price for such an experimental machine!!
    Thanks for reading!!
    Daniel

The AVC is doing it's job as most controls adjust the AVC, so you need to set the truck up then rebind with all set up, the more you adjust the steering knob at the front it is actually adjusting AVC input.

My 2 cents. Just bought one of these last night. Went to break it in today and it wouldn't move. Called tech support, they had me tighten the slipper clutch and lean out the high and low side. Finally got it going, proceeded with the break in, by the book, per the tech support guy. Third tank in, temps right at 200 and half way through the tank, engine locks up. Apparently this is a super common problem with these. I'm going to take it to my local Hobby Town where I bought it in the morning to see about getting rid of it. I don't really want to wait forever for an exchange just to go through the same thing again, as others have.
EDIT: Watching this video helped me decide on getting this truck. I only wish I had read through the comments more thoroughly I would have learned this one blew up too.

Looking Good !!! The cause for the sudden shut off is do to the carb setting. Notice you adjusted the throttle trim with the remote and not the linkage itself. This will leave a gap/space). This allows the carburetor to close and cut itself off. Once linkage spring is adjusted to kick back @ 9.05 all should be fine.

    • @TheRealRCSparks
      @TheRealRCSparks  9 років тому

It was a defective Engine and the Piston was warped out of the box. You are not "allowed" to adjust the Idle Screw.. it specifically states that in the manual. The throttle trim can be used.. it is just a PITA

After a while, the fuel tank gives problems. The two parts are not glued/joined very well and it starts leaking fuel and airpressure, causing the engine to stall at low revs and start problems. Both me and my friend have these problems. Mine also eats spark plugs. Somehow the inner pin gets loose and the engine stops. Great car, but improvement is welcome!

First thing firsts the adjustments needs to be done on running engine, should be 80-100 degrees Celsius. You start from high speed needle turning it clockwise 1/4 at a time, if the car dies at full throttle, means it is too lean so rich it a bit (1/4). At full throttle (keep throttle for 2-3 seconds) the engine does not rise more speed or dies? If no, lean more (1/4 clockwise). If yes, rich more (1/4 anticlockwise). Idle needle adjustment: leave the car for 10 seconds at idle, the engine shuts off? If yes, turn 1/4 clockwise the idle needle. If no, but the engine gets high speed and the wheels start to spin, rich more (anticlockwise 1/4). Minimum or low (whatever you call it) speed needle adjustment: Accelerate full throttle for 2-3 seconds, leave it idle for 10 seconds. The engine speed does not drop down or even it rises? If yes, rich it (anticlockwise 1/4). If no, but the engine drops down correctly after a few seconds and keeps running (not shutting down)? If no, lean a bit (clockwise 1/4). If yes it's done.
Said this, the throttle trim should be at 0, don't even touch it, it has nothing to do with the carburetion.
Oh yeah, if you mess up with the idle needle and the engine just going crazy (wheels spins and engine rise) when you start it up. Take off the air filter, now bring the beat of the idle to have a hole of 1mm.
I know at a first look it may seem complicated or not understandable but read it nice and slowly and you should be okay.
P.S. Sorry for my bad english, i tried my best.

    hey rc sparks
That motor is just a weed eater motor. If you leave the body is off you get dirt on that air filter, that is not good. Because you could get dirt into that motor. You turn the lower needle in about a quarter turn and then turn the upper about a quarter turn in and should be good. I hate that avc doesn't really do the vehicle any good. But its ok. have fun let us know what happens

It's supposed to be 1700 hours military time. Don't forget that any engine being tuned will turn a higher rpm when leaned out with no load. As soon as a load is applied it will run out of fuel and will need to be richened up. Also, an engine will use more fuel when cold than when in it's optimal heat range. It will use more fuel when it is at super high temperature as well. Tweak the engine to highest obtainable RPM then richen it up just abit for the load factor and bc the fuel helps to keep the piston cool so it doesn't expand too much in the bore. Remember that an engine that makes an bogging sound (Bawlhh) when under acceleration is too lean and when it sutters or hesitates it's too Rich accompanied by black smoke which ur not going to see with a two stoke. At an Idle it's clearly too lean when the engine just turns off. I think your problem is the clutch is engaged so when u land the engine stops. BC it is a centrifugal clutch the fwd momentum can not restart the engine. The same thing used to happen to me when ever I jumped my dirt bike when I first learned how to ride with a manual clutch. Except when I landed the back wheel would lock until it turned the engine over and restarted. I hate how temperamental the little engines are with fuel. If u spend all morning tuning the engine in the cooler more oxygenated air by the afternoon in the hot humid oxygen depleted air the fuel settings must be retinkered the same goes for the evening. We can all win by installing a violently excessive brushless motor with a lightning throwing Hiamp 8s Lipo. Respond if you need me to send you an MP3 of me making the ("Bawlhh") sound. lol

I just hope this engine package gets offered in a small-block foot print. I would love to swap my jato's 3.3 for a gas version lol

jeeezzzz... that tiny petrol engine sounds exactly like a nitro one! In every rpm range. I'm surprised. Even how it starts and chokes.

He had the idle turned up. You can see him adjusting it at the beginning. Plus that engine is new and rich. You can afford to run the idle a little high while you are breaking in

This truck your going to need a lot of patience my friend more so then nitro. Its a lot of try and error once you get it right its a lot fun yes not going to be fast as electric but I never care about speed 40 to 50mph is good for me. Some people have problem with nitro not me I tune all my nitro truck and cars once I never touch the needles again I always run on a little rice side. Max speed on this truck is around 40 to 45mph if tune right.

The AVC receivers I've had don't change throttle to stabilise pitch, they change the throttle to stabilise roll in turns.

At a 14/1 ratio, it will smoke quite a bit. They take some time to get tuned, and once they are, they will go pretty good.
Is the fuel that you are using have Ethanol in it? That will have an effect on how it runs believe it or not. They can get pretty temperamental.

Medic do you think you will buy the 1/8th scale brushless yeti from axial. Anyways the idea of avc is cool but I notice that everyone over corrects and end up landing harder. I think avc should only control the steering servos not throttle.

***** hi , I was considering this car or the savage octane cause my 5t isn't the easiest thing to carry around but I totally dispense the hustle of tuning a nitro engine, no way I'm taking that direction again and that's exactly what you reminded me when you guys where trying to tune the beast. because this gas engine is just an adaptation of a nitro engine it doesn't seem to be as stable and easy to use as a proper gas engine such as the one on the savage octane! please correct me if I'm wrong I would like to ear your thoughts about this thanks.

Btw and I know u alrdy know this, but when tuning use small increments and make sure the truck is up to operating temps. I hope losi looks at this video and do something different lol. I've through this and still am with my mgt 4.6se
