Everyone should watch The Jungle Book, and Sleeping Beauty has some of the most stunning hand-drawn animation of all time. I know the renaissance movies are more modern and fun but that's also when Disney started to become a souless corporate machine. I think many of their older, less successful movies are more interesting. Something that bothers me about a lot of their 90s animations is the tendency to use musical sequences to hide poor storytelling.

"Let It Go" is the villain song in this movie. Seriously, if it was in a minor key, with the same lyrics, you'd have a dark ice queen learning that she can be a supervillain.
That’s what I love about it, really. There’s even a villainous rendition of it online. It just sucks that it becoming a popular song diluted that a lot; think about it, in context it’s about Elsa making really bad life decisions, but it _feels_ good for her, so therefore it sounds like an empowerment song, but it still ends abruptly at the end. Even with the movie story as it is now, that song is basically in the last place you’d expect to find the big, show-stopping, empowering Oscar Bait song; I.e. it’s right at the start of the second act, right after she’s run away from her problems and inadvertently caused a permanent winter. I mean it’s a children’s Disney musical, it‘s not like it’s a super deep masterpiece of story, but I think that it has a lot of good storytelling like this that sadly gets overlooked (even the infamous Hans twist is hinted at a few times if you think about it, like how awkward, cringey, and even badly-timed Love Is An Open Door is compared to your average beautiful, gorgeous Disney love song, or how Hans gestures to the castle when he says “I’ve found my place”, or how Elsa roasts Anna for falling in love with Hans at first sight. Hans was obviously being set up as a decoy of some kind. People just didn’t care to look because twist villains in kids’ movies weren’t a dime a dozen at the time) because ooh “FrOzEn BaD”. People don’t give it enough credit because it was so damn popular and hipsters want to hate on things that are popular.

One thing that would've sold the "I'm actually evil" is, if instead of jumping in to try and save Elsa instead the Secretly Evil Prince is shown not jumping in, and perhaps having the smallest of upturns of the lip. Just enough to sell you on the "I'm actually evil" when it comes up later with literally nothing to back it at all prior to that point.
the genius of 'love is in open door' is in how the characters view an 'open door'. for Anna, it's a way OUT of her solitude. for the prince, it's a way IN to her kingdom and it's resources. sorta brilliant

Frozen was just solid. The Hanns turn was a head scratcher that nearly took me out of it honestly. a 'bad guy' for the sake of it in my book. Only really watched it because I had entered a Film Theorist binge and him as well as others in general were going at it suddenly so I had to see what the fuss was about. And yes! Tangled all the way!

A lot of people say this was the start of the second Disney Renaissance, however I argue that it started in 2009 with The Princess and the Frog, all the 'Walt Disney Animation Studios' films were very well recieved from this point.
