Reading Studies in Pessimism brought me great comfort. Finally I found I was not alone in the world and someone would tell the truth. I think Arthur Schopenhauer was the world's greatest and most honest philosopher. .
I have heard him referred to as the "kindest philosopher," although of course he was known to be cantankerous in person. But they mean that his philosophy is derived from a profound sense of kindness towards all that suffer.
There is no such thing as truth. The only thing that is actually there is your 'logically' ascertained premise, which you call truth. If you have the courage to touch life for the first time, you will never know what hit you. Everything man has thought, felt and experienced is gone, and nothing is put in its place.
Wow...this quote captures it all for me, "...If he does not love solitude, he will not love freedom; for it is only when he is alone that he is really free." This explains why I have turned down many marriage proposals. I love freedom and solitude at my core despite the occasional and passing want of company.
"No doubt, when modesty was made a virtue, it was very a advantageous thing for the fools, for everybody is expected to speak of himself as if he were one." Hilarious, and oh so true.
I shall be told, I suppose that my philosophy is comfortless because I speak the truth; and people prefer to believe that everything the Lord made is good. If you are onesuch, go to the priests, and leave philosophers in peace! -----------Arthur Schopenhauer
Absolutely agree on that.- He gave me so much consolation and made me save pains and time I certainly would have spent on trying to integrate to a many groups of shallow people during life while I nowadays confidently stay calm for my own.
Because life itself would be a sad one if one was sad about to be alive it would be foolish. In contrary the one being happy about being at life has reason to be happy for that cause although he hasn't to think it would be a good thing he came to life at all.
Thanks for posting. Something to play over and over again for contemplation. I found what looks like a typo at 6:04 "Religion is [...] "the way they shall thing", where "thing" no doubt should be "think".

+Mari Christian Indeed he was. It would be interesting to know what experiences of women he had, in his time, which brought him to it because he regarded himself as rational.
SupremeFeline. I was in agreement with most of what Arthur Schopenhauer had to say--that must make me a supreme pessimist. But as a woman(not necessarily a feminist), I also realized that he was something of a misogynist. S. just didn't like women very much and that was his perogative.
On balance, humanity as a whole are a bad lot. Still, it's possible to nurture the best in our husbands, wives and children, find joy in music, love our animals. Otherwise, why live?
A dark vision, indeed. Living as a hermit with your sole animal companion sounds like your best option...that is if you wish to continue in your suffering.

The one philosopher who speaks directly to the soul
The one philosopher who talked the truth and addressed the problem instead of masking them with nonsense positivity.

@@beinghuman3225 Just, like, believe me, man. I can, like, touch life and stuff..
With Schopenhauer sense attached to every sentence, he has so many bright points that abundance of quotes has been just overwhelming.

I cherish my moments of solitude, I feel most relaxed and free. Most times when socializing I would have to become something I'm not.
Go read what arhthur says about marriage its prison literally a PRISON
@@greatestever7623 That sounds interesting to read...thanks.

Certainly a misogynist, but much of what S. says is fundamentally true.
+Mari Christian Indeed he was. It would be interesting to know what experiences of women he had, in his time, which brought him to it because he regarded himself as rational.
I'd love to know the source of his misogyny, too.
I'll have to find a brief biography and find out if he was ever married.

Scary how many people praise this guy. He fits right in with all the other terrible German philosophers.
I feel most of his quotes contradict each other so badly too, a chaotic mic of pessimism and stoicism
