We share a very similar experience with our Shopsmith. My Dad owned a Shopsmith and I learned to use one from a young age. As I got older and into my career I really didn’t have much room for a shop. Upon my retirement I built a 16x20 shop in back of the house and set up a Shopsmith based one. That Shopsmith was my Dad’s 50s era Mark 5. Because Shopsmith continues to upgrade based on the original Mark 5 design I was able to bring my Dad’s machine up to date. This is a real credit to Shopsmith, they stuck with a proven design and only improved it over time. I also love to work on the lathe. I agree it is a capable machine as a lathe especially if the Power Pro headstock is used or a conventional headstock with a speed reducer attachment. I am going to try your dust collection setup. A friend told me about the Marc Adams School of Woodworking near Indianapolis. The class made it all come together. They have a myriad of classes worth checking out.
