After releasing Episode 77, I have had many requests for more information on the impact of circadian clocks on our health. I have therefore decided to re-release this conversation with world-leading expert in circadian biology, whose research in this area is truly ground-breaking. So, here it is!
We know that snacking late at night isn’t a good idea, but until recently, there was little research into what health benefits we could gain from avoiding it. This week, I talk to world leading expert in circadian biology, Professor Satchin Panda, whose research has shown that mice who were restricted to eating within an 8-10 hour window were completely protected from obesity, type-2 diabetes, fatty liver disease, high cholesterol and cardiovascular disease! Professor Panda discusses the findings of his ground-breaking research and explains that when we eat really may be more important than what we eat. We delve into sleep, how research in this area may influence the timing that pharmaceutical drugs are given in the future, why we should wait an hour after waking before eating or drinking anything and much more. Professor Panda’s wealth of knowledge in this area is amazing and this is a really fascinating conversation.

I eat between sunrise and sunset since 3 months. No snacks. 3 meals. Which I might change to 2 in the winter months next year. Breakfast between 7am-9am. Lunch 11am-1pm. Dinner 5pm-7pm. Bedtime at 10pm. Waking up around 5am. Whenever my body decides to wake up without alarm. When you have regularity in your day your body functions will work properly. Do not switch on big lights when it is dark. Let daylight speak to your body. Every 2 hours another body function is working. In the night your body renews and whatever you do during the day affects your night. Waking up during the night has to do with your body functions or emotions which are not dealt with. Have a morning routine. It is the most important thing in your day. How you start your day, so will be the rest of your day. Make time for yourself. Look after yourself. You are the most important person in your life. Not your kids, not your partner, or parents. At the moment it is winter and sunrise is 8am and sunset is before 4pm. This is less then 8 hours to eat. This is worth listening to several times. Dr. Panda's pleasantly calming --even understated-- vocal tone belies the breadth and significance of information and experience he shares.
I so appreciate these videos. Dr. Panda is spot on when he says that research work rarely makes into public media and that includes Doctors because the AMA and NIH are very good at suppressing information if it does not support the pharmaceutical industry!

This makes perfect sense. After Listening to Dr Valter Longo I switched to Time restricted Eating.
Wake most mornings at 05:00, am at work by 06:30, eat Breakfast at 08:30 (nothing before that) my second meal is always a salad with Lemon Juice at 12:30, and Dinner is never later than 18:00, after that nothing.
Works for me. I am also almost 100% plant based, eat a bit of fish or Chicken not more than once a month.
I also try and do a 72 hour water fast once every 3 months.
I eat plant based and only between sunrise and sunset. Plants gives energy. Chicken, potatoes, tomatoes, fish are neutral with your energy. Red meat eats your energy, and also take away, canned food, old food, microwave food.
Go to bed at 10pm. Wake up around 5am. Everyday, 365 days, all year long. No sleeping in.
Eat 3 meals around the same time everyday. No snacks in between or in the evening.
I feel great. Plant based and routine is the key. Much love. xx

"hangover" that's exactly how I feel sometimes when i eat late, I have takeaways a couple of times a month and I have stopped having them as late as I did for that reason

Make home made food. You can make very healthy meals. Eat between sunrise and sunset. Go to bed at 10pm. Wake up before 6am without alarm. You will see if you go everyday at 10pm, you will wake up around the same time everyday. Don't sleep longer on the days you are not working. Routine is the key. Eat everyday at the same time, so your body knows when food is coming. Stop with the take away. It depletes your energy. Plant based is advised, it gives energy. If you want to eat meat, be it chicken and fish is neutral with your energy. No red meat. Red meat effects your energy level. You can also change other things in your life, like work if it effects your circadian rhythm. You have to put your body first. If you do that, you will enjoy your whole life healthy. I hope you have some new knowledge that you can put in your daily life. Much love. xx
Norton Kelly - same. I have vastly improved my eating habits (& other circadian rhythm lufestyle factors to improve my healthspan. Always, ALWAYS, since childhood ate dinner very late - after 9pm, or even - hate to say it - as late as midnight!
For 5-6 yrs also had about 4-6 oz red wine with these late night dinners. So, my sleep was definitely compromised both with the wine and late dinners. Always very hard to get up in the a.m. - very low energy, falling asleep again early in the day.
Then...big awakening - DO something about my backwards circadian rhythm! Get outside, at least by 9am, sans sunglasses, to shut down melatonin early in the day. Exercise early in the day.. Cut iut the wine altogether. Eating earlier in the day - incorporate intermittent fasting. Narrowed my feeding window.
It's been a huge struggle reversing these awful habits...took MONTHS to get where I need to be. Feel great now!...no daytime sleepiness - good energy on consistent basis.
But...life interferes sometimes (only occasionally) and I find myself eating at 9 (which for me NOW, is late - 9pm dinners used to be 'early' for me Ugg!). I have noticed that in these rare occasions when I eat late (i.e., around 9pm) I feel 'off' the next day...low energy, out-of-sorts, low mood, etc.
@@jquest43 disagree...I never eat takeout, always eat very healthfully - but I have recently 'cleaned up my act' on my feeding window.
My whole life -since childhood, until recently - an 'early dinner' for me was 9pm! Often ate dinner anywhere from 9-12pm. Always had trouble staying awake the next day.
It has taken MONTHS to correct my eating times, but I am now regularly eating dinner anywhere from 5:30 to 7pm. So now, 7pm, for me is a 'late' dinner. My energy levels and my sleep have improved phenomenally! Lots of energy early a.m., improved mood, no daytime sleepiness.
Every once in awhile, though, life interferes and I find myself eating dinner at 9 (which, for me now, is a late dinner).
I have noticed that the day following my 'late' dinner, I feel 'off', low energy/motivation, etc. I am eating the same, but tgmhe timing has changed and I can definitely feel the difference the next day.
Also, have noticed that my stubborn fatty 'love handles' on the back of my upper waist have melted away. That's got to be a result of the earlier feeding window. I am basically pretty slim, but had live handles & tried everything to get that fat off my rear upper waist, but now it's just melted away - definitely an added bonus on top of all the energy and enhanced mood effects I am seeing.

But irrespective of that the content and topics discussed were amazing. Literally every time I felt a question arise in me, it would be answered almost immediately! And out of the hundreds of podcasts I’ve listened to on these topics, this has had the biggest impact on me. I was walking at the time and had to keep stopping in my tracks with my mouth wide open and the biggest lightbulb flashing over my head :)

Same issue, the info is amazing but the ads interrupting literally every five minutes or less is soooo aggravating and distracting, I lose the train of thought and get confused, also impossible to listen to in the background unless you wanna spend another hour listening to annoying ads half the time. This is fascinating. Thanks! Basic Āyurveda teaches this including when to take medicine for best effect. Meds will be less necessary when people turn to living with intermittent fasting and circadian rhythms, what Āyurveda calls dinacharya. - mastery of the day. Adherence to a healthy schedule is the foundation for good health. 🙏🏻

I was thinking the same thing! Ayurveda has been touting these practices for thousands of years. Vata, pitta and kapha cycles happen in the body every 4 hours further dividing the processes of anabolism, metabolism and catabolism. ‘Go with the flow’ and you’ll live a disease free life.
Fabulous. I read "The End of Illness" and learned the importance of regular habits, and this furthers that idea. I am pretty good except for the caffeine, which I am now interested in changing. Gasp. I signed up for the circadian tracker app. Thank you.
Uber-eats is only making food abuse worse. Gastro paresis is a horrible condition which means our stomach is only working at half strength, and digestion might take twice as long, or longer. So this information is vital for all who are trying to work out how to maximise the body’s coordination. There’s so much coming to light re our bodies physiology!

Yes I recently went from 8 window eat at twelve noon to eating between 10 and 11 stop eating between 5 and 6 no lie my insulin resistance stopped my blood sugars are normal over the last week. I started intermittent fasting around January come of last bit of long acting insulin March. This podcast was right on time for me even though it was recorded two years ago

I slept solid from 12-7:30 granted not 10-6 which is what I'm aiming for but this video was so fascinating I went to Amazon to get his book and saw he had studies there so i signed up. Eventually I had to shut it down and go to bed. It felt so good getting quality sleep.
Tried this for 2 weeks (early days yet) and I've put 4 pounds on... LOL! However, I've experimented with foods that would normally give me terrible acid reflux.. and so far, I've slept really well with 0 problems. So that's brilliant- however the weight loss thing... surprised me this morning when I weighed myself.

Timing of eating immediately reminded me of AyurVedic Medicine where doctors tell you to eat your largest meal during Pitta period between 10am and 2pm. AyurVedic and Yogic experts are providing direction for new western research. Vedic Science is the major reason why fascinated countries sent their professors to India for training thousands of years ago.

When this virus appeared I started working from home so didn't have to follow an artificial schedule. I eat at 6 AM and again at 11:30, and that's it. It improved my sleep no end. And took the extra couple inches of stress fat off my tummy, and I never feel hungry. And my little skin bumps vanished. I know everybody is different, and I have always been a morning eater.
I eat at 8am and finish my dinner at 1:30pm.

Eat once a day. Between 1700-1900. Skip breakfast. After fasting when you sleep its easy to continue. Skip bread, sugar and vegetable oils
I'm already doing intermittend fasting. But I've always liked to stay up late, start my eating late around noon and eat untill I go to bed. I'll rethink this and experiment. Especially now in the darkest of winter it should be beneficial to shift my eating and waking cycle so I get the most out of the scarce daylight.
Thanks for another informative podcast! I'm keen to reduce my eating window. I get up at 5.30am, is it OK to be up for a while and maybe even travel by train to work and then have breakfast later on? Hopefully that would be OK as I wouldn't want to be eating my dinner before 5.30pm

Yes! Personally I break my fast only at 12 pm, and eat until 7 or 8 pm.
I start my meals at 1.30pm - 2pm and finish at 6pm. All the bloating and heartburn went and I do feel so much better. OMAD was a bit strict for me. But my sleep for the last 22 years has been no more than 4-5 hours (since my total hysterectomy-not sure if there's a connection). Quite a few times, I haven't slept at all and had to go to work nearly weeping. So I need to improve my sleep. I don't go to my GP as all they do is give me more tablets which I do not want to take. After rising to 12 lots, I stopped most after I started feeling worse (no I'm not recommending this, I started finding ways to heal myself first). I don't often drink coffee, but my pulse is normally 60bpm, but half an hour after a cup, it had shot up to 100bpm. So any advice for more sleep would be greatly appreciated. (I'm 62) Thank you.
I used to not sleep well, about 5 years ago I completely cut out caffeine, I have decaff tea and coffee - within a week of stopping my sleep improved 10 folds. I now sleep 8 to 9 hours. Hope it helps.
Is it possible that different people have different circadian rhythm? My husband has a tendency to want to eat within an 8 hour window, but it is much later in the day than I prefer.

WHATS THE BOOK?? Tried finding 'The circadian code' at my library. Found instead 'The circadian diabetes code, by Satchin Panda ( published 2021... unless I read that incorrectly.) Are there TWO books? Don't recall, at all, that your mention of the book included 'diabetes' in the title!

8 am - 4pm winter and the rest of the year?
What is sad is that time restricted eating has been around for years now, but very few good studies have to done on humans that show any marked benefits. The studies out there on humans are either a couple of days or a couple of weeks which prove nothing. All the rest are anecdotal by one writer or another with self reported results. You would think as important as the information is for mice there would be a year long controlled study on humans by now. Sadly, that isn't the case.
No money to be made on it. Not eating is free. Test it on yourself.

No doubt studies would be beneficial.
Humans are not mice in labs. We lie to researchers regularly unless we are observed directly, or honestly do not accurately recall our behavior even by the end of the day. We go shopping, we have holiday dinners, we cook and feed our children and spouses, we go to birthday parties, football games, office events, etc. Good luck finding a large group willing to structure their life in the long term to limit the timing of their eating so carefully, with the exception of ascetics and anorexics. They usually have issues that except them from being the subject of studies.
When you talk about fluids, you only mention coffee and tea. What about water, herbal tea etc. does fluid intake need to be time restricted too?
Water, herbal tea, as well as tea and coffee all fine to consume in fasting window. Ideally you do not want milk, cream or sugar in your tea/coffee though!
@@DrChatterjeeRangan, This is such a great podcast. So i gather that we can still have water during the fasting hours. How many hours should one be awake after dinner before going to bed? and exercise best after dinner or before.
@@DrChatterjeeRangan Thank you sir for your clarification. I fast 14 hours a day, everyday, stopping eating at 7-8 pm and not eating my breakfast until 9-10 am. However, I do have black coffee right when I wake. No sugar, no cream. Sounds like this is ok.

Need some advice please. Im working on 2 meals a day 1st 11am to12noon, 2nd, 6-7 pm. However, can I have something in-between these hours? I'm Semi Keto, moderate fat/protein, carbs range 25-50/day Will I still still have the 10 hr window effect with some food in between? I also try keep calorie level 1500 to 1850/day.

Probably, yes. I would recommend testing your gut microbiome via a functional/integrative doctor, if there is an issue there, intermittent fasting would help repair the intestines, eating the right diet could repair your gut microbes. This would lead to improvement in neurological issues (gut/brain are connected).

Yes when you eat is very important. But....if you do a search on Zoe you will find out about our microbiome which is different for us all even identical twins. So Epigenetics play a more important role than genetics. They found that identical twins mostly die from different diseases. This is down to their microbiomes and lifestyle.
Zoe was the first covid tracker app that worked but was originally set up to look into our microbiomes and diet. I have a very special diet which excludes all Gluten, Lactose, Caffeine and Brassicas like Broccoli and Kale but includes Fat.
There is a scientific reason for this.
Also someone else I know has Coeliacs disease so must not eat any gluten at all. That fits my diet too but I am not a Coeliac.
Others have allergies to certain foods as I do too but that is not why I don’t eat Brassicas. We all need to find the diet that suits us individually. There is no single ‘Healthy Diet’. Genetics also plays a role.
So we have
1)Our Microbiome and Epigenetics
2)Genetics
3)When we eat
4)What we should eat and when
This is different for us all but maybe we could find similar groups of people and categorise them.

if people are trying to lose weight they should stay away from olive oil and even limit avocado as a very very special treat. I learned that from Dr mcDougall the fat you eat is the fat you wear. With milk, technically yes. So should be avoided. But, as a practical matter, if it's 1 teaspoon or less, I find that it does not seem affect my insulin much.

I have a question! I eat primarily a vegan diet and don't eat processed foods (for the most part). I begin each day with 24 oz of lemon or lime water and then (most days) go for a 2-3 mile walk. Then I have 16-24 oz of celery juice and wait at least 30 minutes, sometimes even up to 2 hours or so before eating food. My question is what should I consider to be my first food of the day? The lemon/lime water or the celery juice? I noticed years ago I feel better and stay slimmer if I eat earlier. I have a lifelong insomnia issue (I recently discovered my posterior airway is only 1-2 mm instead of 10-15) and so I do everything I can to assist in whatever proper sleep I can get. Thank you for all that you do!

Sooo disappointed in Chatterjee's suggestion to let children inherit shoes from older kids. Pediatric therapist here: We know that each person alters their shoes during wear. The wearer with flat arches, poor gait, etc. will "leave" a shoe altered in a way that isn't helpful for a developing foot.
