I'm a Brit who was on a working holiday in NZ, I spent the majority of my time in Christchurch and I frequentes The Rose & Thistle where I met a great lad called Josh who I still keep in touch with, once he'd left the pub, the locals told me his dad is a Kiwi legend named Wayne Smith and this is how I ended up here. I miss NZ, the great people and the beautiful countryside.
What a brilliant doc that was. As a welshman i have nothing but respect for what wayne smith, graham henry & steve hanson did for rugby as a whole during their time as coaches. I think the world of rugby watched & improved for the betterment of the game under their stewardship of the all blacks.
On my oath now; I have learnt more about the structure and means by which such a relatively small nation has set the bench-mark for world rugby for so long; simply by listening to this 'treasure' of New Zealand rugby. With the greatest respect to the many hundreds of New Zealand interviews that I have had the pleasure to listen to, this particular one, for me, is the best of the top-drawer. And for the two sad buggers that gave this interview 'thumbs down', " Stand up, and stop using your thumbs for balance, ya spack pelvised radgi mugrums".
@@jackbrady9738 Interview with Wayne 'Buck' Shelford. Also, Gabby Logan interview with Richie Mc Caw. But they aren't on the same par as this Wayne Smith one. ATB man.
Arthur Pokere: I live in the UK, and regularly read Stuart Barnes’ articles. He is a big fan of NZ’s style of rugby and the All Blacks. Don’t lump him in with Stephen Jones!
humble and softly spoken but an incredibly brilliant and incisive rugby brain and coach .... set the standard for dual xvs and 7s All Blacks .... he should have been given more support as AB's HC and despite his disappointment, and the fact that he could have been a head coach for any other country in the world, his love for NZ took him home and he was always happy to put his shoulder to the wheel to help empower consecutive AB RWC Winning teams in 2011 and 2015 ..... that is some ABs legacy !
I remember the first time I met Wayne Smith.. I was waiting in line for the toilet at the all blacks vs Wales game in Japan and he tapped me on the left shoulder and said. "there's a urinal there bro" I haven't washed my left shoulder to this day. Goods times.
I did my Coaching levels with Smithy during the old Lancaster Park days. He used to Lend me his coaching videos and i think i still have them.Such an awsome guy and mentor
Awesome deco to view from back in old days to now the evolving game of rugby has develop for the future of all us whom love the game worth watching thank you Wayne
@@richardscanlan3167 A hint of sarcasm in your comment to me...? Hmm, not sure Fossie was my choice, but continuity, and he has guys in his coaching group who others were chasing also. Time will tell, if they get to play..... Stay safe x

What a brilliant down to earth, kiwi styled interview.... You could see the emergence of the best team \ coaches for the ABs for 2011 \2015 world cups campaign. What a legend. Fantastic....
That Ranfurly sheild run was so great. I was a teeneager at Papanui high at the time and me and my mates would jump in my little car and take off down to Lancaster Park to watch the games......such a good side Canterbury had back then....
Thank you Smitty for your lifetime service to NZ, NZ rugby and the rugby world community. You have blessed us all, the 4 million people back home and the millions living around the world. Blessings in abundance to you and your family. Great All Black in my book.
What will always resonate with me that you would oftentimes say that the players have to play the game in front of their eyes. That to me is brilliant.
Tremendous documentary. Great insight into a very special person and coach. A student of the game who mastered the game. A great thinker. Thank you for your service to New Zealand rugby.
Delighted to be able to watch this. Shaped my coaching via the Rugby Site and brought a lot of joy to a group of young players because of that. Th asks mate.
I just want to thank you for everything you have done for New Zealand and Rugby and for sharing your life with us.So much to say and admire about Wayne Smith, Thank you for helping me become a better person.
I can imagine that most rugby players would want Wayne in their corner. A class act who recently won the Women's rugby World with the Black Ferns for a record 6th time. Doesn't get better than the Professor. Legeng
Black Ferns now reaping the benefits of this mans knowledge and mana as well as the greats that line up to help him out ... How lucky are we NZders to have this pre-polished jewel here wanting our whole country to shine with minimum fuss !!
G'day Wayne. You assert yourself as always ready to learn new things and re learn old things. Here is an assertion (without dissertation). Go through and identify which hand each player writes with or texts with these days. Ask them to use their lazy hand more than the strong hand until they feel ambidextrous. You now have a player that has a wider scope of access to your suggestions and ideas not to mention the balance they achieve from this simple exercise which they can do in their spare time costs nothing but produces a balanced left and right brain hemisphere. Watch for the change after you do this. I am ambidextrous and it is like I have two me's. two players in one man by jingoes this could be innovative.
John Mitchell was the worst choice of coach to replace Wayne Smith. One of New Zealand Rugby’s worst decisions. I still reckon Wayne Smith would have won the 2003 Rugby World Cup had he remained in the role. The 2000 and 2001 seasons were important stepping stones in the build up to 2003.
I could listen to Smithy all day. His contribution to rugby in NZ is immense.

When the players you coach speak so highly of you - Then you know you are a highly respected coach and man - Stoked for Smithy
