- In a dramatic display of protest, New Zealand MPs performed the traditional Maori haka in Parliament, halting proceedings over a controversial treaty bill. The bill seeks to narrow the interpretation of the historic Treaty of Waitangi, sparking outrage among Maori leaders and supporters. The protest comes amid nationwide rallies as tensions rise over the rights of Indigenous people.

@maggietemp4770 can you quote the Bible verse which says something like "behold, those who stand against God shall be respected and worshipped"
At the fundamental level, the debating chamber is a place of order, civil and respect. Regardless of who’s wrong or right, they should at least respect each other and the constitution and vote in peace, debate in peace. This is just disrespectful. If you disagree, bring forward your arguments and allow counter arguments instead of causing a tantrum.
Nah that's not how Oliver Cromwell dethroned the British monarch and introduced a parliament.
This is just a means for attention seeking. Parliament is not a space for dancing and performing tribal rituals. If she disagrees then she can present her points in a rational way instead of jumping and shouting.

WHAT exactly was the problem with the bill??

It sought to undermine fundamental Maori Indigenous rights.

This certainly was a historic day for New Zealand and for democracy. The Treaty Principles Bill passed it's first reading in the House of Parliament. A bill that seeks to clarify the constitutonal interpretation of the Treaty of Waitangi, New Zealand's founding document. I applaud and thank David Seymour for his bravery and honor in presenting the bill and for those MPs who voted to pass it to it's second reading.
A snake has a forked tongue. If it’s the same, a change isn’t necessary. You call “change” clarification because you’re a liar and a sneak.
The problem is David Seymour has excluded the other Treaty partner in his reinterpretation of the Treaty. It's a contract between the Britsh monarchy and the Indigenous population not a 3rd party
When pakeha and maori have a treaty a founding document or contract and one side wants to change that contract without even consultation with the other contract holder isn't that a breach of contract ...I mean it's your mortgage and the bank changes your contract without telling you
There is nothing wrong with trying to define the treaty
@@stephenlennon7369There is no partnership. That word was introduced by snakes and thieves in 1975 and all NZers did not get a vote to turn it into a so called partnership. All parties to the treaty can have a say at select committee instead of excluding 99% of NZers.
LOL that's crazy i never saw such protest, it's amazing
And for those “Kiwis” in the comments. Kiwi is a Māori word, don’t forget that with that dementia of yours.
True that mauri ora ❤️✌
Wow, a truly pointless and irrelevant statement... well done
So what?
Yeah, it's a Kiwi word. Now what?
Palaeontologists excavating the St Bathans fossil site in Central Otago say kiwi, moa and Takahē came from Australia just a few million years ago so kiwis are not native to NZ just like Maori who arrived on boats awhile after the peaceful Moriori did. I wonder what happened to the Moriori (and the Moa)?
Imagine you own some lalnd
You lease out the land to some tenants with a contract that states you still own the land, but they get the right to sublet the land out.
The tenants of that land, as well as the people they lease the land to now decide that they want to vote on what the contract actually meant. ( ie did they really lease the land or did they mean to buy the land).
you as the land owner have no vote in matter. That is what the Bill is proposing to do.
Thanks for breaking it down
But the Māori didn’t own the land either. They took it over from other people as well
@@Bellehiek Even if we set aside the history of how land was acquired, the point is about agreements and fairness. In this case, Māori entered into an agreement (Te Tiriti o Waitangi) with the Crown, clearly stating that they retained authority over their lands and taonga.
Whether someone disputes how land changed hands historically doesn’t change the fact that an agreement was made. The issue is that the Bill proposes to let one side decide the meaning of the agreement without involving the original landowner.
It’s about respecting agreements, regardless of past conflicts, and ensuring that all parties to the original contract have a say in how it’s interpreted
This! 🙌🏽
they don't own the land muppet
I stand with the peaceful Maori people. They have all their rights to protect their culture and history. Come on! Iv'e lost the idea of globalism. We have to figure out something new.
These are the indigenous people and they are the owners of the land and their country is occupied. Just like the Palestinian people, the New Zealand government, like the Israeli occupation, came from Britain and occupied New Zealand.
They were killing, enslaving and literally eating each other before the British arrived. So yeah, colonialism but it was greatly beneficial too in many ways. The simplistic and cartoonish colonizer-colonized argument is a lot more complex in reality.
Sorry they are not!!
Palestine was under jews according to King Davids rule , the Syria was under Greeks so what

Maori get so many benefits and it's the rich ones at the top getting the payouts that don't let it trickle down. Heads of tribes driving flash cars and all the spoils but others in poverty. The young generations are sick and tired of paying out for what people before did. I have people on both sides that have been done ill by through invasions and raids. Everyone should be treated the same. If I go to the hospital, I go to the head of the queue because of my part Maori heritage. That's wrong. Western Imperialism, needs to step aside and allow the natural custodians of the land, the Maori people, to use all resources available to them (through reparations) to restore their natural rights to exercise self-determination, and original territories as they see fit for their people and environments.
And its no foreign persons business how they choose to utilize their rightful natural heritage. And all Kiwis ought to support the Maori people's fight for their heritage.

An example of this is the indigenous people of Australia who have restrictions placed on them when drinking alcohol, because they have not evolved with alcohol and thus cannot handle it. Second, Māori having input over the use of land is a good thing because key Māori values highlight the importance of protecting the land for future generations, thereby making them a force for environmental protection, without which we would have a far more polluted country. As for universities, yeah that is pretty unfair that Māori get put ahead of other people, but not really a special right as anyone who learns the language can get given special Māori scholarships, this is to promote stuff like more Māori speaking doctors, so that Māori feel more comfortable going and seeking medical help (which they do at a lower rate compared to other groups.)
