  • I have tried every which way, to get my Moluccan Cockatoo Milo to step up. He has a bum foot and that is a challenge, he can close the foot but not open it. This video shows many different ways that I am trying to get him to step up. Hopefully this will help you with your bird.

Firstly, You need to respect his space. He is giving you body language that shows he absoloutly does not want to step up.
Secondly, your not rewarding him/ giving him incentive to do what your asking him to do. You need to find a treat that he never refuses (my boy loves pine nuts or a pinecone covered in peanut butter) make sure you ONLY feed that treat during training. My boy wasnt food driven hence why we tried a peanut butter covered pinecone, once he got used to that as a treat we were able to use it as a reinforcer during training.
Thirdly, when approaching him, i would have the treat in your free hand and gently place your other hand in front of him and 'ask' not demand, a step up.
Failing this, target stick train him first, this allows you to get him to move to a target without the need to touch him. It will build up communication between you both and you may even be able to target stick him into your hand.
Make sure you only treat/reward when BOTH feet are on you. As time goes on, you then only treat when youve got your thumb over his feet, your thumb will then become his que to know hes in the right place, and it means he cant travel up your arm to your shoulder.
Perhaps clicker train him too, this is great for building reward excitment.
Keep trying these steps and you will get there!

LittleHouseOfLove thank you for all the info! This video is older and now he steps up much easier! He has one bad foot and that’s why I had so much trouble . I appreciate your advice! Thank you! He is a special bird! 😉

Its all in the body language, being forceful is begging for a bite. Can tell you love her though & she's well taken care of 💕❤

My macaw started to step up on me recently by showing the vertical hand.Unfortunately he started to avoid me after 5 days of training and now he tries to bite me.But when I close the door for few seconds and Start again then he just puts one foot on my hand...he is unwilling to step up now...don't know what went wrong? Also should I keep my hand horizontal now?

I am having the same problem with my cockatoo. How did you get him off the top of the cage and how did you get him to the table top?

I have noticed that they will be more likely to step on your arm when you are taller then them! So I climb on a ladder and offer him my arm! If they tend to bite try using a leather protective glove ! 😊

@@Weloveparrots2 Not a glove that may scare them....use a wooden perch or rope perch bent into a circle...less frightening than a glove.

Best to Not give peanuts, they can have mold /aflatoxin.... tree nuts (almonds, walnuts, pecans) are healthier. ...& Don't have to give whole nut, half or quarter, fewer calories, more training....and yes, some birds value verbal reinforcement.
