From the classic Vietnam War story collection “The Things They Carried” (1990). Read by Jerry Edwards of All Stories Aloud. For educational purposes only.
He was a friend of my brother that I knew well. His books about the VietNam war are excellent reading. I have all of them; except this one and that's why II'm here today and listening. We all grew up together in Worthington, Minnesota. A great place to grow up in. Much better life than currently. 2020 is now. I'm 75 and Tim is 74 now (if he's still alive)
Thank you for sharing! I am not sure how I happened upon this story. I am in my late 40’s so I didn’t come here because of school. I would have read the book if it was for school. This is a beautiful story. I will be searching out more of his Vietnam stories to read on my tablet. If you hadn’t made your comment I would not have known to look for more from this author. Thank you :)
4 years ago I'd read this for high school. It was a long read that I despised, but I liked it. Today, after graduating college, I revisit in hopes to be guided by Tim's words again. I want to quit my internship I just started a week ago. But even as short as a week, I knew from the bottom of my heart this is not what I want to do with my life. To others, I may be disrespectful and irresponsible. But I know that if I don't quit this job, I'd but see myself a coward.
I have an 81-year-old man who has been an ‘Elroy’ to me for many years now. A man with an incredible lie story, his words are often few; he never pries, he has seen me in my best and worst moments, and never told me what to do. He has just been ... present. The world needs more ‘Elroys’ and less people who feel the need to fix others with their solutions.
I appreciate the sentiment. But what if you’re in a situation where the loved one that refuses to be helped or help themselves is bringing you down in the process? Even tougher when I feel as if I wouldn’t be able to live with myself if I abandoned them in the midst of the chaos they are living through.
@@townbythetown Hi Jay. I'm not sure I understand your reply, so maybe it might help if you expand a little further. Possibly you were thrown by my words about my dear old friend 'with an incredible lie story'. I meant, of course, 'life story'; it was a typo. He has been wonderful, wise presence to me! And so, so helpful -- without telling me what to do. A true Elroy ...
I enjoyed it, but the slight pompous tone towards “hard hats” (the blue collar), equating “hicks” as automatically simple and uneducated was a bit annoying
Thank you so much man, I hate reading for school.
I have all f's thanks to my adhd and quarantine
Same lol. Thank youu 🙏
same here man lol
@@buroheem school system failed us, you did nothing wrong... Don’t forget that, don’t be too hard on yourself.
Analyzing ruins the books, makes it less fun
His voice is so good

Like God, or the gods who look on in absolute silence, as we live our lives, as we make our choices. Or fail to make them.
