Exactly this. It's really hard to imagine how someone can be 'forced off the road' by an HGV on a motorway entry situation, without them driving indecisively to the extreme. You can see a lorry from far away and estimate if getting ahead is plausible or keeping behind is better. And if you end up miscalculating by a little and you're next to the cab racing to get ahead genuinely trying to do it safe and not cut in close, most HGV drivers will let off the gas just a second to make it easier.
Nearly everyone I see having problems are people who drive dangerously slow, refuse to adjust their speed, then rage when other drivers don't perform emergency braking to let them in.
Some idiot tried to attack my business partner over that. We were going 95 in a 100 next to an easy 400 meter on ramp. Boomer pulls up next to him, sticks next to him, doesn't accelerate, doesn't brake, doesn't use the large gap ahead of us and behind us, keeps driving like that for the entire length of the ramp, then starts and trying to push in raging because he 'isn't let in'. 😆

We've had lane closures on one the the main routes into Southampton recently. This kind of thing was commonplace on the first few days of the works. They did put out a load of signs saying 'USE BOTH LANES' and 'MERGE IN TURN' and it has calmed down a lot but there is still the single queue when there's still 800 yards of road left. The disappointing thing was so-called professional drivers in HGVs policing the road by driving straight down the middle.

Anyone who genuinely wants to see all of the available road space used, with vehicles merging in turn at the point where one of the lanes closes, should have no objection to vehicles 'blocking' the last part (or even a longer section) of an empty lane. When they do this and then keep pace with the vehicles in the other lane, the result is that the last section of both lanes is filled because the lane fills up behind them.
The people who object most strongly to this action are ALWAYS the ones whose primary reason for using the empty lane is to 'queue jump' at the expense of others.

That very much depends on the situation.
Nowhere in the Highway Code does it say that drivers should drive all the way to the point where a lane ends before merging.
In fact, both rules that mention 'merge in turn' say that drivers should obey road signs, and there will almost always be signs indicating that vehicles should move over long before a lane actually closes.
It is often better to merge earlier to help keep traffic moving smoothly, but there are some drivers who will always drive right to the end and then force their way in, even if it gains them only a couple of car lanes.
Other drivers will even continue past red X's that are over empty lanes.

My wife suffered a burst appendix a few years ago and it wasn't certain she'd survive.
I was working on the other side of the country and, while I didn't drive recklessly to get home, I certainly didn't dawdle.
On another occasion there was a possibility that an industrial project I was overseeing might have exploded.
I was staying in a hotel 40 miles from the site and, once again, I wasn't hanging around on my way there.
On that occasion, I actually flagged down a cop-car and they escorted me to the oil refinery where I was working.
I absolutely accept that the vast majority of people who drive aggressively are simply being tools AND that there's never an excuse for driving recklessly but people who do stuff like straddling two lanes to prevent other cars passing should consider the possibility that the vehicle behind them IS making an urgent journey.
If it turned out that the driver of that Land Rover was, for example, trying to get to a hospital after finding out that their child had been stabbed, would you want to hinder them or would you try to help them by letting them pass?

The reason I find this sort of behaviour so jarring is because, when I was on my way home to my wife, I had one small incident where I was on a wide A-road and the driver in front indicated right and slowed down to make a right turn into a side-road.
I slowed to a stop behind them and, when it became apparent that there was a steady stream of oncoming traffic, I moved to pass on the left (which the road was easily wide enough to allow) and the driver in front - after stopping to make a right-turn - eased across to the left side of the road to prevent me from passing.
Let's face it; that's an entirely spiteful manoeuvre.
That driver is thinking "I'm being delayed by oncoming traffic so I'm going to make sure you're delayed too"

It is the layout of the cones. One lane goes straight ahead interrupted, whilst the other lane tapers down to nothing, meaning this lane gets squashed into the other. Road users in the uninterrupted lane then think they have right of way over the tapered lane. This can lead to confrontation & argument. Maybe another reason drivers get into the uninterrupted lane early.
The cones should taper both lanes into one, right in the centre of the road, before directing the traffic flow to the left or right as required.

I drove at around 20-30mph in Lane 2 for a solid 5 minutes, passing all the stationary cars in Lane 1. Suddenly, a skip lorry pulled out in front of me to cut me off, I slowed down to match his speed, mirror, shoulder check signal, manoeuvre into lane 3. To my amazement, the skip lorry moved into Lane 3 even though he is strictly forbidden from doing so. I slowed down in Lane 2, channeled Ashley's knowledge and stayed right back. I didn't pass the skip lorry even though I could have, since I had kids in the back. More drivers travelling in Lane 2 and 3 tried to pass and the skip lorry made some very dangerous manoeuvres. In a merge-in-turn situation, there are two queues which merge (in turn) at the merge point. Sometimes one is going stupidly slowly because it consists of people who don't understand merge-in-turn and think that there is just one queue, in their lane, which the people in the other lane need to petition to join. There is no obligation on the other queue to slow to match the speed of the ignorant people. (Though obviously they should not go at a dangerous speed, especially keeping in mind the existence of officious ignorant idiots like the Renault driver.)
What you suggest that the Renault driver should have done, if intended to prevent such progress of the other queue, would still constitute deliberate blocking of the highway and it might lead to prosecution. They should have either joined (or rather stayed in) the queue of people who don't understand merge-in-turn, or proceeded in the other lane at an appropriate safe speed, which would have been significantly higher than the speed of the right-hand lane. The fact that they deliberately joined the lane to block it clinches the case -- they need points on their license.
The RRover behaved appallingly once they had been riled up by the idiot. But what they were initially trying to do was reasonable, legal, and indeed what you are _supposed_ to do.

Look at lane 2, a long queue, look at lane 1, nice and empty..learn to use all of the available road space right up until the point of lane closure and then merge in turn, it’s not queue jumping, it’s smart driving..2 short queues is better than 1 long queue, it’s good for traffic flow as it gets twice the number of vehicles through at the same point and it also minimises disruption further back at junctions.

I don't think the Renault driver was the problem initially, he was the only one observing the merge in turn protocol correctly. Yes he should have let it go once it became aggressive but the problem was created because drivers moved across into single file way too early. This often leads to some drivers legitimately using the available road space to overtake or undertake the single file queue. Other drivers then get annoyed at being overtaken and try to block. The correct method is for drivers to stay in lane until close to the point that the road narrows, probably around 200 meters then, those who need to, move gently across in turn. Drivers already in lane should leave enough space in front of themselves for ONE CAR ONLY to comfortably merge in turn and once that car has moved in do not leave the same amount of space for another to jump in. This method works well when done properly and its a fundamental failure of driving instruction that this situation has not been addressed so that everybody has a clear understanding what they should do.
It was not unreasonable for the car behind to move up but he was way out of order once he started to try to force his way past and should be charged and prosecuted for aggressive and dangerous driving. Once people start moving across to single file early it becomes contagious and pretty much always leads to pushing in and trying to gain advantage at some point whilst some slow excessively and let lots of cars in front, frustrating others behind. It also often creates an unnecessarily long static queue. And how far back would be correct to start moving across , quarter of a mile? half a mile? one mile? two?

    • @Dreadpirateflappy

@@DreadpirateflappyYes you are right, I hadn't paid proper attention to the start of the video and assumed the Peugeot was originally in the left lane. He was clearly being bloody minded and moved across to prevent others "jumping the queue". It does however illustrate my point quite well as to the sort of conflict that frequently occurs when drivers move across and form a single line queue too far away from where the road narrows. There is then no obvious point where to begin to merge and many drivers get irritated and often angry when others decide a different point to themselves and some take the opportunity to go up the inside to the front of the queue, and why wouldn't they make use of the available empty piece of road.
I have seen drivers move across to block the inside lane like this on numerous occasions, though the off roading antics seen here are not so commonplace.

Queue at the bank, queue in the Post Office etc. So when it comes to road use, we do the same thing (again different for the multi-cultural society where it is a free-for-all, especially mopeds & scooters)
I was never taught to merge-in-turn. I was taught to get into the correct lane (in roadworks, the open lane) in plenty of time.
Roadworks themselves don't help. One lane ends, forcing drivers into the open lane, rather than both sides of the roads tapering in, so both lanes have to merge.

The problem is with theory and practice. If you merge right at the cones , this will result in traffic essentially STOPPING. If people actually merged waay back when there is more space/time, cars will have to slow down... but not necessarily stop. Ideally this can be done by people just taking their foot of the accelerator. As soon as brake lights appear, people behind brake harder, and people behind them even harder. Then the queuing starts.....🤷‍♂
HOWEVER, all you need need is one selfish dufus to race to the cones and then the whole process breaks. Given that most people are in this bracket, merge late is the only _fair_ way. (Even though the early way is the _better_ way , in an ideal world).
I look forward to the day when we are all in self-driving cars and the onboard software negotiates with the other cars around to decide who is more important ... 😀

I move to the empty lane and drive slower than normal to display an unaggressive and unhurried approach. At the pinch point I slow down enough to allow any triggered drivers to get in front while I find suitable space. Usually, I have no problems at all.

To be clear, and reading the first two replies here, going a bit faster (not much faster) than the other lane is not only polite, but also greatly reduces the risk of a collision if somebody does decide to pull out in front. Zooming past traffic at speed could be dangerous in any queue.

(Such a shame that we can't tag multiple people in a message to answer them)
So yeah, ChannelWings, Bugbloke and Gavin, your advices are great. Going slow alongside the queue is a great way to show that you're not here to gain time and also reduce the risk of collision with slower moving traffic!

Great example to set to your children: pick a fight with a stranger and do your best to carry it on.
