Hey Nob, thanks for this video. I had the second version of this Dyna Bee that came with a groove and string to start it, but I learned to start it with my palm like you did because the MIT guys I learned about this from had the original one with no string, so I had to. It was always hard to start and was fragile. My father ruined it by trying to start it by pressing the ball along a glass table top. It damaged the rotor so it wouldn't spin freely any more. I now have the same model you have from eBay with the black ball but it is so messed up it won't start. I have to somehow clean it. Meanwhile I bought a DynaFlex and several NSD Spinners, and I can tell you without reservation that the NSD Spinners are the best designed, best made gyroscopic spinners by far. They improved the design and filed patents on it. They are the only ones that can be taken appart by removing 3 small screws so you can clean the inside. This is critical to smooth free spinning. When I first got one, I had to work hard to start it with my palm, like you did in the video. Then I disassembled it and cleaned it out with a brush and compressed air. You'd be surprised at how much dust and fine plastic particles I found in there. After reassembling the cleaned spinner I learned to easily start it with just a light flick of the thumb. I could never do that before with any spinner. And after a year later I can still do it without ever cleaning it again. Another important improvement, these spinners are practically silent. The other two brands I have are noisy as hell. I use it as the ultimate fidget spinner, like you do, and I use it while watching TV without disturbing anyone sitting down with me. They are also break-resistant. There are videos showing them dropped from several stories while spinning and still working afterwards. Amazing. In fact I recently dropped mine on a hard tile floor and cracked the clear ball of the rotor. There's a 1" crack. It still starts up instantly with a thumb flick and ironically, it spins smoother while coasting! I am not selling this, I just really like it and think you would too. A good model to start with is the NSD PB-688 Power Essential Spinner. That's the first one I got and use the most. They cost only $20 on Amazon.
I've been wondering for a while now what it is! I used it as a fidget toy as well when I was young. Its a little dirty now and won't spin up fast enough... even after some wd40 spray. Really sad that you dropped it at the end of your video... I'll practice somewhere with a soft area.
