    We do drink before college, I think the main reason for high levels of drinking incidents is due to the fact that a lot of college students can be bad influences and encourage extreme drinking. Also at many parties around college campuses alcohol is likely to be provided by the party, therefore it’s free. Many people see this and try to drink as much as they can to get their moneys worth. As you guys mentioned though, there are more substances than just alcohol being utilized in some cases.

    I was confused on why Dave questioned whether kids drink here in America before college. He said in the UK kids start early, why would he assume America would be different? Tons of kids smoke weed here as well, why wouldn’t they drink?
    I wasn’t a heavy drinker in high school whatsoever, but literally 95% of the people I knew in all walks of life drank pretty regularly. At parties, or just small hangouts with friends etc. there were a few that didn’t drink but only smoked, but yeah drinking was incredibly common no matter which social circle you’re in.

      I agree. My experience is similar to yours. I'm in college right now and everyone I know has drunk alcohol before going to college. Some have done it under the supervision of a parent throughout the years and some have done it alone or with friends. So, for a lot of students, they aren't drinking alcohol for the first time once they are in college. When I was in high school, I only knew one girl that hadn't drunk alcohol before. Obviously, I didn't know everyone in the school personally, but out of everyone I got to know over 4 years, she was the only one that hadn't drunk alcohol.

    My favorite college town ins Denton, TX, home of the U of North Texas. Amazing town full of art and music, food and fun. An hour from Dallas/Ft Worth, 30 mins to the OK border, the top of the Golden Triangle of Dallas, Ft. Worth, and Denton. Also a county seat, so it has a really sweet courthouse square surrounded by restaurants and music venues. Played a lot of shows there. Back in 2003-2004 my band had a house with a skate ramp in the backyard, and we'd host traveling punk and hardcore bands with shows at the house, giving th money to the touring bands. College towns are cultural centers to a huge degree.

    The nice thing about a college town is often they are set up so that you can walk (or bike) to most areas of interest, and have access to the necessities without requiring a lot of driving. I have family that lives in Bloomington, Indiana where Indiana University is located. The town has a population of about 80k, and around 35k of that is students and faculty of the University. The downtown area is about a 15 minute walk from several of the larger dormitories on campus, and there’s a shopping mall about 15 minutes in the opposite direction.
    I went to college in Santa Barbara, California and the local college community is called Isla Vista which is approximately a one square mile area containing apartments, condos, duplexes, etc, and campus is about a 5 minute bike ride to the south. There a number of eateries, a couple grocery markets, and (most importantly) over a dozen bars in the area.
    If you had to drive your car, street parking was terrible, so it was usually better to just ride bikes around, unless you needed to go to do major grocery shopping at the supermarkets.
    I can also personally attest to Cal Poly SLO being a decent college town. I had friends attending there while I was at UCSB, and I drove up a few times to hang out. Then after I graduated and was still living in Santa Barbara, a couple of my former college roommates went to SLO for grad school. By then we were in our mid to late 20’s, so we weren’t looking for frat house parties, but we’d walk downtown to hang out at the bars or see bands playing at a local venue. Other times we’d drive out to the coast for a few hours and just enjoy the scenery.
    If you’re wanting a good ‘college town’ experience, definitely stick to places with populations around 100k or less, where the student population makes up at least 20%. There’s easily 100 good options in the US that fit the bill.

  • @jno99
    @jno99 Рік тому

    Dave comparing frat houses to some off campus party house like crack houses is hilarious. Yes frats have parties but are also heavily regulated by the National Interfraternity Council (IFC) and each frat has a national hq that governs chapters across the country. Frats have charters and member councils, they have specific philanthropic causes and do charity fundraising and community activities. They hold lectures and meetings on leadership, etc. Frats get charters revoked and kicked off campus when they get in trouble. Sororities are similar, governing body is National Panhellic Council.

    It’s a real misconception that America doesn’t have a significant drinking culture. I mean, the cocktail was invented there.
    The difference is just a couple minor things: generally people don’t drink in the middle of the day unless they’re off work. Though I’m a lawyer and lawyers often have drinks at lunch.
    Second, it’s a massive binge drinking culture. So daily drinking in moderation like you’ll find in France or Italy just isn’t a think. Americans drink a lot. But they drink to get drunk and it’s generally just a social, gojng out thing.
    I would surmise that most Americans start drinking in high school, rather than middle school but definitely not college. There are very few people who are being introduced to alcohol in college.
    Then there are the exceptions around the country where the alcohol culture is very intense. Boston, south Louisiana, parts of the Midwest (Wisconsin).
    The USA is so vast and diverse culturally that it’s very rare that it has a singular “culture” surrounding things like you would see in England for instance. You’d have to get it down to the state, not the whole country.

  • @beanscollections2020
    @beanscollections2020 Рік тому +12

    Dave, ignore the drinking age here. I would guess large portions of American kids drink for the first time around 13-16yo.
    (what it was like when I was that age anyway) There are many parents who buy and allow a little drinking in their homes on the weekends because they know kids are going to do it anyway so may as well have it happen in a safe controlled environment.

    I lived in Bloomington Indiana, home of Indiana University, for 2 years (2nd on his list). It's definitely a college town. Exactly like he explained. Sunday morning, Frat Row houses all had toilet paper in their trees and trash everywhere. They cleaned it up pretty quick to keep the school off their ass. A lot of the schools have cracked down on the crazy parties so it's not as bad as it used to be.
    My daughter now attends Indiana University and it seems much more tame. However, we did let her start drinking at home at 16 so she wouldn't go wild when she got to college. It's always the most sheltered ones that go tits out when they get away from their parents.

    If you want to see the best college football atmospheres in a moderate-size town either go to the University of Alabama in Tuscaloosa or the University of Tennessee in Knoxville great schools, great fans, smaller towns compared to the size of the schools.
    I live in Nashville Tennessee which technically could be called a college town. We have 8 Universities and dozens of separate colleges offering more specialized fields of training in this town. The largest is Vanderbilt University which is the only one truly in the downtown area so their sphere of influence for the students would be closer to downtown. The other schools are spread out all over the town so basically each area of Nashville that has a university is like a small college town within itself.
    I'm sure some of the kids go downtown occasionally to party and attend sporting events with the Nashville Predators of the Tennessee Titans etcetera, but like most of us, they know downtown Nashville is now mostly for tourists or people attending events.

    I grew up in a college town, heck one of our most well known shopping centers is called, College Town Shopping Center. My Great Aunt was a founding trustee of the college too. Having said that, so many college towns in my experience suck for local residents. Yes, colleges bring employment. The colleges also bring extensive growth in crime, house & apt fires, disturbing the peace & atmosphere of the local community. The once residential neighborhoods get bought up by the slumlords for off campus housing &/or colleges either buy out other homes & business or worse yet, if it's a public college they use government eminent to steal homes & business. All of which drive up housing costs. Similar to how The Vail Corp. is destroying ski towns. Only The Vail Corp is targeting the deep pockets of skiers, colleges are targeting the deep pockets of cheap federally backed student loans. Another difference being The Vail Corp has an incentive to make the community attractive, colleges have ZERO incentive to do so, they tend to only care if the campus looks goods. Just look at Yale University & New Haven, CT... New Haven, CT is total 💩 show but Yale University is gorgeous. My grandparents house that my grandfather bought in the 1930s & lived in til is dead in 2006, is now located in the new student ghetto. Since the new campus housing is located in the old student ghetto.
    I have worked near colleges in NJ, PA, DE, NC, SC & nearly every college campus has destroyed the "town" for the local community.

    Since there are 2 major universities (FSU&FAMU) in town it does get a little crazy when you travel towards the campus side of town, especially during a game, but once summer/spring break comes around it's pretty quiet and slow. I think college towns are a great place to raise your family.

    I think you're right and most people don't start regularly drinking until they're away from mom and dad at college, but it was never hard to find parties in high school.
    High school sports and other activities forbid alcohol/weed, so you'd get kicked out of athletics/band/etc for getting caught at a party. Most kids didn't want to risk it and didn't go to parties often.

    The University of Virginia, founded by Thomas Jefferson, is one of the most gorgeous schools in the country. In fact, the school is not considered a 'campus' like other schools -- all property is referred to as 'The Grounds'. I have close friends who played football -- Saturday night football parties with the football team. Great memories. (1988-1992)

    Daz needs to go to Iowa City, Iowa. It is the home of the University of Iowa Hawkeyes. Their football team has one of the most rabid fan bases of any school in the country. Iowa City is the textbook definition of a "college town". Even though it has fewer than 75,000 people, it is a surprisingly diverse and cosmopolitan city, with a huge arts scene.

    Greek life isn’t always what it used to be like with kids dying from hazing. I went to a college town that was dubbed the biggest party town in the country before I got there. A kid pledging for a house died in a creek bed and one of the colleges banned their Greek like. Lots of houses in the town you could tell used to be huge party spots that weren’t filled with frat party guys anymore

    The college drinking culture in the US is pretty robust but not quite like the UK where college age students may have been drinking for years. Also, drinking is much more a cultural social activity there than here. Here, people are not as likely to leave work and stop at a bar or pub before heading home. Also, I don't believe people drink alcohol with their meals as much here as in the UK. Remember, the US is quite a religiously influenced country compare to the UK and Europe and heavy drinking is mostly shunned. Especially among females. ♣

      I was NOT a fraternity member however at the university I attended the fraternities did provide an alternative to campus housing and dining. At the time I attended, the school really only had enough on-campus housing for a minority of students. It required freshmen to live on-campus so beyond that most students had to find housing in the surrounding city. There was what the video described as a "student ghetto" but living in a frat house was a more attractive option for many and the frat houses also provided meals (each had a full time cook employed).

    You were a bit wrong when you said older people don't want to live in college towns. Not only are they often attracted by the attractive appearance and things like dining of many of these towns, but there's a trend of colleges offering educational options to seniors. Many retired people actual want to spend their copious free time studying subjects they've just always wanted to know more about. I once studied weather forecasting for no reason than that it interested me for example.

    I live 20 miles up the road, and Ithaca is notorious for being ...let's call it "bizarre". Ithaca Commons, in particular, is a place you don't want to be after dark, though daylight isn't devoid of sketchy characters.
