Almost immediately after you had introduced the "POV camera setup" i was thinking of writing a joke about this POV style video being quite different from the ones i "watched last night", but as it turns out this one also involved things like "Dilding apparatus", "dangers of overflow" and "nut smell" PS. Love the way you present yourself in the video(s) as this paves the way for an excellent result when combined with your choice of setup and the way it`s edited. In conclusion this makes the content fun to watch, easy to follow (down to the tiniest details) and thus also easy to learn. Keep up the good work!
Just came across this! Amazing! Also, this view with the sliding glass and the wood frame looks like you're a crazy neighbour down the street doing chemistry on his windowsill... in a good way
I have to try this, so I can smell it myself. A nutty ester sounds very unique. You should try making ethyl hexanoate. It has this amazing pineapple smell! I made the hexanoic acid by the Jones oxidation of n-hexanol, but you might be able to find a source of hexanoc acid. If you have a soxhlet extractor you can increase the yield by removing water with 3Å molecular sieves loaded into the extractor (Le Chatelier’s principal) I didn’t come up with this (Nurdrage did), but having tried this with multiple different reactions I know it works very well.
I actually have a video where i used that method! It works well i just didn't use it in this video Because it's alot of work and i didn't really care too much about yield
Very neat, I am definitely going to make this. I have 1-propanol, 1-pentanol, and a bunch of other alcohols. One of the things I want to do is make the acetate and benzoate and other esters of all of them, even though I think most of them will just be variations of banana.
If I’m remembering correctly, isopentyl propanoate has a tropical fruit punch smell (to me at least). n-Pentyl propanoate probably smells nearly identical.
Ha ha I perfectly understand you. I had to prepare iodoform only to know how it smells becase some resources say it smells like saffron while others say it smells like hospital... what?? I can positively confirm that in small concentrations it is really reminiscent of saffron but don't dare to take a sniff as it quickly becomes very unpleasant and bleachy stench of disinfectants. Similarly, I found that the odour of indole is described as "jasmine, fecal" - which sounds contradictory only until one has a chance of smell it :D The border between pleasant and unpleasant smells is fuzzy and suprisingly subjective.
Indole is an interesting one. At very low concentrations it has a floral smell. However, at slightly higher concentrations it smells similar to naphthalene which quickly becomes overwhelming. The threshold between that floral smell, and the naphthalene-like smell seems to be very narrow. It is quite an obnoxious chemical. It readily permeates through the container despite the container being stored in another airtight container inside of a bag with activated carbon.
I wish I knew the vibrator strat when I was doing my undergrad research and had to deal with horrible 1L sized emulsions lol. If I ever go for grad school I'll have to bring a special toy I guess...
You mention Toluene is a common paint stripper, but I can't find it anywhere anymore. Is there still some store that sells it, or do you just have some left?
I have a chemistry problem I'm trying to remedy for about 12 years and still no answer I distill automatic transmission fluid waste automatic transmission fluid at 600 plus degrees Fahrenheit into a diesel like fraction specific density 640 this is used as a fuel it runs an engine perfectly and has done so for a decade the issue that I currently have is the distal is hazy even after all different types of chemical treatments almost none of them will remove the haze bleaching clays acids basis alcohols water washing the chemical tea or MEA none of these will remove the haze there is some type of suspended particles that are almost impossible to remove ethanol alcohol and sodium hydroxide is the only thing that will remove it but I'm looking for one other type process to remove the suspended particles
@samthenerf a centrifugal remove most of them in a clay filter media will remove all of them but no other way to remove them unless you wait and that will disappear it's almost like suspended white crystals I guess if you wait long enough they will re-enter solution and dissolve
You said you would release 1 video per week, right? Pretty sure I heard you said that. I have lawyers on standby btw since we now have proof of you agreeing to those terms (proof is I said so)
If i did i apologize 😅 i had alot of stuff to work on irl but also this project took a while. Lots of waiting and then i made some mistakes ruining days of work. I'll try to produce stuff as soon as i can 🙏
Fantastic video, as always! Thanks for the shout-out; I'm thrilled the procedure worked for you. I can't wait to see what you share next!
Thanks lol means a lot 🙏
Good to see you doing real chem again!
Having fun and educating people was my goal from the beginning
I explored other avenues but i think i'll stick with content like this for the future 👍
BTW you can obtain benzoic acid from sodium benzoate, a common food preservative.
Yes. And I made benzene from it when I was a kid.
I had trouble finding it but i also decided i wanted to make it from toluene for the challenge

Dang, the new POV style is really something, love it!🔥
Thanks! I've thought about the idea for a while and it turned out pretty ok. Reflections and smudges on the glass are brutal though 💀

Damn amazing video, also love this POV
Keep it up man
Thanks 🙏
The new POV is cool! Also love your content cant wait for more
Thank you!
I do it for the people so your compliments mean a lot!

I'll have to try those out. Ester's are pretty fun compounds
Excellent job! Please make more chemistry vids!

Yeah there's supposedly lots of smells but some are sorta similar... This one was quite pleasant though 😊
If I’m remembering correctly, isopentyl propanoate has a tropical fruit punch smell (to me at least). n-Pentyl propanoate probably smells nearly identical.
@@ashe1.070 Yes, that's one I'm looking forward to. The nutty smell of this one was not something I expected to be as nice as it sounds.
Yeah a surprisingly complex smell for one molecule
This is so jank and I love it
i made this in highschool chem and me and my friend laughed so hard and for so long at how bad it smelled we both got detentions 😭
it smelled like the inside of an old backpack that had been wet very many times and let to dry and accrue that very particular stench
Ha ha I perfectly understand you. I had to prepare iodoform only to know how it smells becase some resources say it smells like saffron while others say it smells like hospital... what?? Interesting 🤔 haven't smelled those things but yeah in my experience the benzoic acid has a heavy "hospital" smell lol

can't quite tell, but I feel like I'm getting punked.
Esters are always fun and rewarding to make.
I agree 😊

If it works it works lol
Classic reaction but nontheless very interesting, might attempt to make it it sound nice :3
what episode of hamiltons was that
You mention Toluene is a common paint stripper, but I can't find it anywhere anymore. Is there still some store that sells it, or do you just have some left?
Yeah i've heard that from some hobby chemists... Idk though i just go to Menards and you can buy a whole gallon for $20 🤷
Dilding appararus 😂
😂 a cursed technique but i guess it works
Very cool
Thanks man 🙏
chemist sam hyde
I like the new POV
Thank you 🙏 I had to buy and install a clear back to my fumehood so i hoped it would be worth it

you should ask on r/askchemistry
You could see if it's a solid impurity by filtering it through a syringe filter.
@samthenerf a centrifugal remove most of them in a clay filter media will remove all of them but no other way to remove them unless you wait and that will disappear it's almost like suspended white crystals I guess if you wait long enough they will re-enter solution and dissolve
@vaclavkokes6236 where is this at is it a website
Wish i could help but i'm not entirely sure what's going on either 🤔
Interesting that you can even do that though i had no idea
Can you make food taste good?
The nut smell is actually edible I just didn't wanna eat it. Probably wasn't clean 😅
You said you would release 1 video per week, right? Pretty sure I heard you said that. I have lawyers on standby btw since we now have proof of you agreeing to those terms (proof is I said so)
