How I Keep My Life Focused On My Mental Health

  • Organizing your life around what's most important to you might be inadvertently sabotaging your life.
People with mental health struggles need to go deeper and determine what is most foundational in their life - not necessarily what is most important to them.
The distinction is critical. The thing that is most foundational is the thing that will cause total system failure.
For me, that thing is managing my life around my mental health goals. I'm going to show you exactly how I do that with a tool called with Sunsama. bit.ly/DrScottSunsama (affiliate link)

Your right on all points and he is one of the best for sure, in my top 3. He has incredible insight and first hand knowledge of all that he speaks of and I have learnt a huge amount from him that has helped me manage my own illness. His only weak point is that he has a tendency to insert 'faith' and 'god' way too much and I don't believe that religion is a helpful tool at all for such mental health conditions. But apart from the faith thing, he is pretty spot on with everything else.

This is so true. Unless you've been to the back end of the abyss, you'll never fully understand the immense solace that can be found in the 'regular' and the 'predictable'. Most folk call this approach boring, but those who know call it survival.

I have found that I need to look after myself physically in order to stay well mentally. You would think that it is an easy thing to do but isn't! I have to be very strict with myself and make sure that I eat well, don't get over tired, walk, read, keep to a routine of getting up at the same time, going to bed at the same time etc. I am retired now so it is easier to do this. It may seem a dull way of living to some people but for me it is survival. Thank you Scott 8:50

I absolutely need to structure my day. If I don’t, I waste far too much time being either completely immersed in my work and neglecting myself or having absolutely no idea what I should be doing (for myself) at any given time. It is much easier to prioritise my family & my work than it is myself.

  • @jadeybabes33

This makes a lot of sense (as usual!) We don't often prioritize our mental health into our days, and just simply doing what is best for us. And you can keep it fairly simple too - sleep, eat, exercise.

I've always been a list person. i use 3x5 card-sized paper pages held together by a brad. i have an "every day" list printed on each page 1 of the day and weekly per day ideas list on a 2nd page, to go over and above my "daily" list. i'm retired but i was always VERY busy in my middle years. Now i try to be kind and patient with myself as well as others. My "pocket notebook" helps me to keep things straight but not be overwhelmed. i also keep a 3rd blank, lined card for inspiring quotes, movies to see, dates for activities i'd like to attend and such. i keep my used pages in a card file by date to refer back to if needed.

6:30 totally can relate to this. After cosuming a lot of psychological and self help content (good and bad) over the years I basically know whats good for me and should be done on a daily basis. Works in theory. Practically I'm thrown around by internal and external stimuli. The struggle of establishing a daily routine is real and I wonder if that can be done without external help and pressure by "regular" people that don't have a professional background in psychology. I feel like it almost requires separating a part of one's self, as one has to be the soldier and conolel (or patient and therapist) simultaneously.

For me, having my day very planned out actually stresses me. On the other hand I do feel overwhelmed quickly and I think planning a bit more ahead, especially to stay more on top of things would be good. I do want to prioritize my mental health more. I feel like my life is oftentimes driven more by others than by myself.

Yes, softly ( but always consistently): rhythms and routines throughout the 3
block times of the day ( interesting the foundation of Early Montessori Care and Education and recent Attachment theories brought out of the dusty basement of
psychological early development….throw in a little Fred Rogers); which I taught and mentored for years ( the delight of my life along with my own children and grandchildren)but somehow my home routines were chaotic. It took me 5 years
following retirement (after developing RA) to focus on my mental/ physical self
Keeping the routines contained in the 3 block rhythms of the morning/ mid day, and evening became the North Star of navigating residual anxiety / depression
along with soft practice of Buddhism and radical acceptance of what is in front of me….that does not include staying in bed for 2 days straight 😂

For me it helps keep my SI and bipolar swings in check.
Yet, it's extremely difficult because I am bipolar. I find myself struggling with being discontent and not being fully present. I just don't know how to handle or balance trying to give myself the stability I never had. As well as the relationships I need.
Unfortunately, this easily turns into a cycle for me. A continuous loop I can't seem to break free from.

I really like that perspective. I've known about Sunsama for a while, but I didn't want to try it because planners and lists stress me out. I never thought about using it primarily for self-care and routines for mental health. I think I'll try it out
I will say though, it's not so much that I think schedules/routines are boring. I would LOVE to be okay most of the time, even if it means forcing myself to stick to a schedule. The problem is that I've failed at so many productivity tools that I've lost nearly all faith in my ability to stick to something like that. I'm still gonna try, but I'm honestly terrified that it's not gonna work for me

My issue is situational! I was married to a narcissist who abused me and used all my money. I divorced her, and gave her the money to pay her real estate taxes and she wasted the money. Now she wants my family to help out. I stopped talking to her for weeks but had to reach out due to the car I had to let her keep. I am done with spousal support but she still expects me to pay her ridiculous bills that she creates by over spending what she has no right to spend.
I get extreme anxiety because of her .. I don’t know what to do! At 61 I should not live like this! I was a happy healthy man of 57 when I married her and now I am a bankrupt, emotionally challenged man…

If you are divorced, not required to pay spousal support and don't share custody of children under the age of 18 it seems going NO CONTACT with your ex is reasonable and may improve your mental health.

I just found you and I’m encouraged by your videos. I’m looking for help and hope you can either allow me a phone consultation or connect me with someone who has the same technique as you. Quick summary. I have had professional help when I was in my 20 & 30’s. I’m 74+, depressed and after seeing some of your videos on being Frozen I feel like I have that connection. I also have anxiety. I had a severe injury in 2018 which pushed me into a tailspin. I need help to get started. Can you direct me?

I was loving the video until it got to the point where it went to prescribe one specific app, instead of suggesting using a tool to help. What a let down as soon as I heard the name drop. I do understand that sponsorship is a necessary evil to deliver what otherwise is free content. But it really felt predatory and made me lose my trust that this video was nothing but a vehicle to sell that one product. I think there are more sensitive ways of still advertising sponsors without being so predatory.

The focal point of this video was simply meant to be the concept of organizing your life around meeting your mental health needs and having some type of system to keep you organized and accountable in doing so. Whether you choose to use the same system that I use or something else is not crucial, but I do think most people will need something to keep them on track ❤️

Agree. Disappointed re yet another”app”. As a senior I have long managed and will continue to manage with simple lists, pencil on paper. So satisfying to check off items, then rip up list and prepare the next day’s. Although some tech, like UA-cam is incredibly useful, we are *drowning* in apps and useless tech and don’t get me started on AI. As a retired Canadian teacher I’m glad to see Ontario is banning cellphones in classrooms. The constant fighting over and grabbing of our *attention* is a HUGE attack on our mental health😡!

Are we in Class concerning spelling and punctuation or are we supposed to work deeper on ourselves,As I am older I always did alot of written cards, letters useing proper spelling and so forth, texting is not my favorite way to communicate ,a subject worth more words, more support and you are supposed to answer in a short few words so I notice my spelling has gone down hill and period writing ✍️ so I don't see any perfection on a cell.phone, texting . Let's take the energy stop complaining focus on the subject and perhaps a few kind or positive words depending on the needs,
