One of the greatest live albums you never heard of period.Texas roots rock and ballads a masterpice presented by truley one of the finest bands texas ever produced. This line up was no joke. Anyone who is serious about playing the electric guitar and wants to know how to play a solo the correct way and say something on your instrument then study this track.yes most of us will never be david but its all here to learn from. The tone, the soulful attack on the strings from a whisper to a roar, the spaces where he lets the solo breath. And listen to the drums and bass they set him up beautifully stay out of his way and let him do his thing. Plus the bass line on the 2nd solo is so beautiful and melodic it really compliments davids phrases which are totally unique to himself. great band. Great song. I'll shut up now, just dig it.
Absolutely love your analysis. I lived in Austin for 4 yrs in the 80s. ( I'm a New Yorker). I've carried this album with me for decades just loving it!.
Picked up this cassette tape back in the day and listened to it endlessly until I wore it out. Nice to hear it again this many years later. Joe is the man if you want to hear Texas rock and blues, full out or just Joe and his gitbox. Peace. Out.
My one and only time seeing Joe Ely in concert was at the Borderline in Charing Cross Road, London, November 1990. Pretty sure it was this band with him. Definitely David Grissom on guitar. Tiny place, jammed to the rafters, one of the greatest gigs I've been at.
Me too. I saw him at Sheffield on a tour titled Two from Texas, Ely shared the bill with Robert Cray. I bought this album in the days that followed, the setlist was virtually identical. The production is phenomenal, so often live recordings lose something in translation, but not here.
You're afraid to lose your cover Afraid to bare your soul Like an Alfred Hitchcock lover Who slowly goes out of control Your love is like the city Only shines at night Your love has no pity Baby baby that's all right Your vanity is your castle You're like a neon sign And the poor lost souls in your shadows You forget, they are friends of mine. Your love is like the city Only shines at night Your love has no pity Baby baby that's all right Little Johnny Vain lost his head While you broke a young girls heart. And Cecil D. Demille once gave to you The 'Cast of Millions' part. Your love is like the city Only shines at night Your love has no pity Baby baby that's all right How many memories have you, honey, Swept beneath the bed? And how many roses have you, honey, Watered till they bled?
The man is a poet of the first degree . What incredible , time marking lyrics...damn. ....and that drummer...the timing of of a Rolex....and don't get me started on the guitar player .. my gracious goodness...😲 Where was this recorded?.. anyone out there know ?
Always thought this was the best Joe Ely collection ever

And grissom's solo should be in the dictionary for 'how it's done'. Taste, tone, delivery. Perfection.
That voice...wow...!!
Great job techs...you captured the real.
