Our unit used "Rest on Arms" on Memorial day - this new maneuver took our unit some practice to get comfortable. *LIKED* the video. See you on the field, at the range, or around the camp fire pards. --- *1st Minnesota SharpShooters* channel with Civil War reenactor live fire, hard marching, and rustic adventure ... enlist today.

Very neat. The book I'm reading, Under the Red Patch (my unit's history 63rd PV) made mention of this.

Thanks! Will you use the contact section in our website and send us the reference so we can collect it? When was the book published? What page? Etc. Thanks for sharing!

This came in handy over the weekend at the 155th reenactment of the Battle of New Market. Great video!

Hey, Will, our unit is having a bit of an argument regarding step 1 of the maneuver, specifically the pivot of the weapon when in two ranks. We've practiced pivoting left-and-right, but this tends to knock into either the musket of the man next to us, or worse, into their face or shoulder. We've tried pivoting fore-and aft, angling the muzzle and butt of the musket to slide between the shoulders of the men in front of us, but this tends to lead to the same issue. Do you have any insights on performing this maneuver in two ranks?

My first thought is it’s a little like saying, “Doctor, it hurts when I do that...”. This was a patch set of drill given by officers. I’m not sure this would have been done in two ranks, closed. I’d first look for any chance to do this with ranks open. Remember, it’s not in the main manual of arms. Good luck!!! I will also play with it when I work in drill with a group next. Will

Tallest on the left, shortest on the right.
