i went on prof burps bubbleworks back in 90s, everyone loved it, even the tough kids. at around 95, one of our school mates jumped into the water, the waves stopped and security came flying out of doors we didn't know existed, took him out of the water and ejected him from the park lol ah the memories :)
I look back at this video and am transported back to my childhood. The anticipation, the smell of the bubble works and then the ride itself. This was the only ride I ever truly fell in love with. I think my parents hate me for how many times I subjugated them to it's whimsey.
It's amazing how back in the 90s every room in the bubbleworks had something going on. E.g. animatronics, flashing lights and loud music. Now Gruffalo is just projectors. It's as if we are going back in time. If only bubbleworks was re-done.
It was certainly a really energetic, charismatic ride that could be enjoyed by everyone - a lot of colourful detail and animations absolutely everywhere. There was not one or two but 14 different music variations, each a completely different style, as each room was a different feel to the last, I remember it being such a good laugh!
Yeah i totally agree!! I remember going on the ride so many times. The only reason i think i went on the imperial leather one was for the music. Yeah you could go round it so many times and not get bored. I really don't know whats gonna happen when gruffalo ip runs out. Will imperial leather buy it out again. Gruffalo soap??
GTAGAMEPLAY Yeah. Merlin are being total cash grabs :( . Seems like Disney is the only good dark ride manufacturer these days. Pirates of the Caribbean at Disneyland Paris is much better than almost any dark ride at any Merlin park
I worked at Chessy in the 90s ... I remember sitting in the staff canteen one day and some ride operators were sitting on the table behind me ... I heard them saying that sometimes they used to see people on the monitors on the bubble works getting out of the cars mid ride and walking about on the sets!
This takes me back to 2004 and 2005 when I went on this ride. For me, I was in complete awe of the theming, the iconic soundtrack by Graham Smart and the clever British Jokes. It was just mesmerising.
They should of returned it back to its old glory. Shame they never learn that Sponsorships and IP's eventually end and then your left with a dead end ride.
I’m 36 now, this was always the first ride we went on everytime we went to Chessington in the 90s - went with my daughter for the first time in 30 years this weekend and what they have done with the Gruffalo is just awful, killed any joy or nostalgia of explaining to her how awesome it was back when I was her age. Great nostalgia.
I remember going on this ride, I absolutely loved it, I went on the newer one and this one doesn't compare. Great video, love it, keep it up! Cheers Peter
This ride was just incredible.. Totally transported you to a completely different world full of whacky characters! The character design was outstanding. So underrated in terms of global fame
What the video can't communicate are the smells..... Citrus, bubblegum, and cherry/raspberry I think! gloriously synthetic yet magical! ever so often something triggers my olfactory senses and I'm taken back for a split second!
This ride was amazing. Wow, brings back so many happy memories from the 90’s when I was little. On my birthdays we used to go to Chessington with my family and friends and we loved this ride, all splashing ourselves with the water and going through that tunnel of water fountains with the music and lights. Such a shame it’s gone. Thanks for bringing back the lovely memories. 😊👍
It irritates me how Chessington's ride theming seems to have gone backwards with the gruffalo! Noticed parts of the gruffalo haven't worked for a few months now, e.g. the first snake doesn't move, and no red light came on and the mouse didn't shout "Gruffalo!", and that gruffalo's eye projection doesn't work either (they've stuck black stickers on as eyes). Also don't understand why they got rid of Bubbleworks before Toady's crazy cars because that is awful. Unfortunately I didn't get to ride the original but I still loved the Imperial Leather one, and looking at the original I would have loved it. I love your documentaries!
I remember putting my umbrella up on this ride aged 5 as I hated getting my hair wet! I swear the next time we went there was a sign saying ‘no umbrellas’ ☔️😂
Went there with the school everyone except me was running around on the sets and the whole soundtrack was just tannoy announcements telling us to get back in the boats
It’s a shame I never got to ride this, being born in 2004, but I still feel disappointed that it was shut down before I could even get a chance to ride it at all.
When this first opened the smells were amazing, they were really strong but over time they reduced & eventually turned off the smells. Beats the current attraction
I went on this original bubble works during through the 90s all the way up to the late 2000s shame it was re themed with ducks imperial leather had to ruin it all the original was much better with all the old classic characters, songs put together it brought more fun entertainment and people really enjoy it with all the tickling feet. Shame it closed in 2016 but wish we could go back to the old years.
I agree I loved bubbleworks when I was a kid. Went on it when they renamed it to imperial leader or whatever didn't like it. Never went back to there since
I remember going to the park less than a year after this ride had gone live, it was, just the video shows, quite magical. But it seemed to me, as soon as they revamped it and sponsored it with the Imperial Leather rubbish, it started to down downhill. We went back and the gorgeous soda smell was gone (Apparently due to cost), half the animtronics were broken and it looked like it was in dire need of rebuilding. i never understood why as a child, because it was around £20 per adult and I think £15? per child back in the late 80's or early 90's, so you can just imagine how much money they were raking in from ticket sales alone, not to mention all the overpriced food, drinks and other merchandise.
They should have a ride like this in EPCOT, in the Land pavilion. And the popular “Orange Bird” character can be the main protagonist of the attraction!!
I loved this ride as a kid, also the imperial leather rubber duck verson wasn't bad when I was a teen, the grufalo verson is way too tame and only aimed for 3 and under..... This ride is a prime example on how not everything needs to change with the times, it seems that every single change that that happens on rides like this something gets mellowed down........what's next ghost trains where teddy bears say boo from behind flowers
*Why, oh, why, did they get rid of this ride? Even killing it with it's rebrand in 2006 due to sponsorship?* PS: I don't hate "The Gruffalo" or any of works of Julia Donaldson but I do find "TG" overrated and JD is not on an level of being the next British Roald Dahl.

i love chessington and all but fuck them for changing this to the gruffalo river ride the music was better, the things in the ride actually worked and the gruffalos eye projected doesn't work any more. the kids may love the graffalo river ride but i don't think you can find the bubble works story in a book unlike the gruffalo, the poor children will grow up to the gruffalo river ride but the worse part is.. they stopped using one of the fountains! they either don't use it or its broken, that fountain part was the best fountain in that room and it looked so good!
Whoever is in charge of Chessington now ought to be ashamed. I read about the Imperial Leather change, which sounds like a joke is so insanely stupid. There's a reason no one ever thinks of the park now, when it was so popular in the 90s, they ruined it.

This was such a great fun ride. Why did they have to ruin it and go all child friendly with gruffalo. Why didn't they put that in a kids section and keep the bubble works?
Ah...I remember this version. The Imperial Leather sponsored-version sucked. I'm sad to hear it's been replaced with something as lame as a GRUFFALO ride.

never went on it but looks a lot better than Gruffalo which is ok for one ride. I think a smurfland theme would be good or like the original willy wonka film not like the poor cartoon one at AT.
