Having seen her in a poorly attended recital at the Sydney Opera House in 1979,I will never forget her beauty of tone, floating exquisite pianissimos & the greatest Vissi d'Arte I will ever hear.
For me she was the last absolute soprano of the 20th century. At present there are no sopranos of the same quality: Musicality, mezzadivoce, pianissimi (all current sing strong without taste) developed chest voice, charisma and humility (the true DIVA) all the great sopranos were always humble and charming, intelligent, Ladies, the current ones are dull, cold, without energy, without passion on stage (except to shout high end) Caballe had an excellent technique, where she sang in pianissimo like no other (without the orchestra overshadowing it) her chest voice very convincing and well developed, her powerful highs (her breathing capacity brought all that to her) and her constant need for the true study of the composer's original score (she did not invent anything written to adapt it to her voice as other sopranos do, she sang a lot varied repertoire original version) She also achieved with his voice what no other soprano of his time could do. For me Callas, Caballe and Tebaldi were the queens of the 20th century.
It's all about looks over talent and training now which is why I stopped following 'modern' opera (along with them pushing 18th century operas into a 21st century setting which doesn't work.) I do think Anna Netrebko is actually one of the last true singers with her caliber.
The hall wasn't full when the performance started - many stayed away because of disappointment Horne had cancelled (because of a difficult pregnancy) and no one in the US had heard of Caballé. In the first intermission people got onto phones and the house filled. At the end agents were there with contracts from recording companies and the Met!
Her incomparable ability of pitch, rhythm, and sustaining a tone even in pianissimo for many beats and ending the note with a flurry brings one to tears. How sorrowful that we will never again see her in performance but I'm thankful for the audio that has captured her voice for posterity.
Today they love voices with wide vibrato. As long as singers are expressive, intonation, purity doesn't matter. Montserrat was from the prevoius generation of singers when they knew how to use voice. What we are hearing today is turning many people away. What a pitty... that we don't have any more singers like Caballe.
ASTONISHING!! I only discovered her after first listening to the incredible Jackie Evancho 'til my ears fell off, then discovering the amazing music of Freddie Mercury leading to this lovely lady, WOW! My age? 66, never too late to learn!!
Maybe she really was unsurpassed for yearslong ago. But this has changed after Renée Fleming was appearing on the international stages. And now her "Com'é bello" is far better than Caballe’s version ever.
RIP.
That’s sad. I know the ones who did know of her were immensely proud of her and loved her very much. The royal family adored her and said she was a great ambassador of Spain. Queen Sofia went to the opera often to see her. Queen Sofia even sat with Montserrat during a particular rehearsal discussing members of the orchestra. The queen was a great patron.
Eternal ... Today is a sad day when you have to accept that a voice like that goes to never comes again.... I don´t believe in reincarnation, but .... please ... If It's true hurry up and give us the gift to enjoy you again
Don't be confused, when young people are fed a diet of jungle drum rythms with 3 word lyrics repeated endlessly, opera becomes confusing for them - concentration spans are very limited today. I have neighbours who share their 'music' with me until 2 in the morning - by then I am more concussed than confused.
*And the rest is history. A star is born!*
Do you know that Caballé was filling in for mezzo Marilyn Horne and after this she got a 25 minute ovation? She certainly deserves it.
Having seen her in a poorly attended recital at the Sydney Opera House in 1979,I will never forget her beauty of tone, floating exquisite pianissimos & the greatest Vissi d'Arte I will ever hear.
She had the most gorgeous soprano voice ever!
DavidAsset78 she still does.
Probably

I've never heard this opera before but Madame Caballe... every note so effortless. She wasn't an opera singer, she WAS opera..
And the fameus tenor Alain Vanzo Thatcher performance
Fantastisch ! Eine der schönsten Interpretationen dieser Arie. Caballe at her best !!!

It's not that we love voices with excessive vibrato tiday, it that faulty techniques abound.
I agree. There are singers out there who follow the "old school" but they are not being hired as often unfortunately.
@@charlesrhodes1358 I wonder why....could it be that the students today expect to master technique without devoting enough time?
you are so there are only a few lady opera singers who sing the songs right like her and like u said know how to use there voice for sure
Listen to Caballe's student, Saioa Hernandez. She's a true singer of the old school
nessuna altra come te, angelo, ultima autentica regina del belcanto, adieu
Inimitabile! Splendida!
La voz mas exquisita del siglo XX

Philip Clock I’m in good company. I discovered her about a month ago & agree with you completely. I am 67.
unbelievable...
What a performance!! Montserrat is just unsurpassed :D
I could listen to this 24 hours a day...
Maybe she really was unsurpassed for yearslong ago. But this has changed after Renée Fleming was appearing on the international stages. And now her "Com'é bello" is far better than Caballe’s version ever.
No. Absolutely not. Fleming is a great current singer, but she is definitely not on par with Callas, Sutherland or Caballé
Lellobeetle I absolutely Agree Fleming certainty not on Par with Caballe! Certainly not!
@@piperlapap Sure, that must have been the reason why Fleming was booed at La Scala singing precisely Lucrezia Borgia !

not to bring down the tone but that final pianissimo was so beautiful it actually made me physically clench my asscheeks
