Hi! We're Darren and Stephanie, the Landlocked Lovebirds! We're an ordinary married couple from the landlocked state of Indiana, with a passion for traveling the world! In our 7 years of marriage, we've managed to visit over 30 countries together! Our channel will teach you how we afford to take once-in-a-lifetime travel adventures each and every year by using the art of travel hacking and by staying in some unconventional accommodations.
Spring is almost here, and we're excited to show you are new 2021 Grand Design Imagine XLS 22MLE! This travel trailer is quite the change from our 2020 RPod 180, and we couldn't be more pumped to hit the road in it. Before camping season kicks off, we thought we'd take the time to give you a full tour angled toward the reasons that we decided to trade for this trailer. We think it's the perfect couples coach!

I think you did a great job on this video.
Just bought the the new XLS 22BHE model. It's similar size to this but with the Murphy bed and a bunkhouse in a slide which is literally a private room! It is amazing how well Grand Design is able to use the space. All of their XLS 22 models use the space SO WELL! Also their new micro sized AIM trailers are incredible. Think R-Pod size but the same quality as GD and innovative use of space. Some of those trailers that are less than 20' feel like they are bigger than most 25' trailers.
We purchased the same trailer and just picked it up yesterday. This was a great overview. Well done! Thanks!
Thank you for the detailed camper review. Enjoy your camper, it’s a very nice upgrade.
Thanks for the tour! It looks like a great camper :)
Great video, we recently purchased the same trailer and are doing our first camping trip in a few days. You showed us a few accessories that may come in handy as well as getting us excited for what's ahead!
Thanks for starting on the inside!
Grand designs is best bang for buck for sure. I’m considering a 2670mk for full timing. It’s amazing with kitchen island and fireplace and pop up tv and office space all for like 26k. It’s a steal!
Definitely an upgrade from the r-pod. Love rear kitchen models! Safe travels.
Great looking set up all around, truck looks great, camper looks amazing--fun times ahead! looking forward to seeing more.
Excellent choice! GD has a wonderful reputation, and fabulous customer support.
You did a great job on this. Love the camper too!.
I agree!! We just ordered our 22MLE and picked up a lot of great ideas watching this video. Thanks so much and happy RV’ing!!!
Can I ask how much you paid for it?
@@cynthiagriffin5291 we paid approx $32k including tax and tags.
Did you consider the Cougar 22MLS with King Bed and window over the bed and window in the bathroom and extra window in the side of the slide? Why did you dismiss it?
My first time on your channel. Thanks so much for stating the facts and opinions without extra jibber jabber and because of this, I subscribed.
You guys are great presenters. Enjoyed the review.
Nice upgrade, I love the dinette! Happy travels!
This is my dream retirement camper, I’m so happy for you guys.
Great Job! Stay Calm and RV on. Harry & Cathy
That’s a really nice couples coach.
We love our GD Reflection 28bh 5th wheel bunk house. We are retired and have the bunk house for our grandsons.
Thx guys...nice tour....trust you'll be pleased
Nice video! I just bought mine yesterday. Thanks for the good idea!
Looking forward to seeing you guys on more videos.
Nice video! Thanks for the tour.
Really like the Grand Designs... could be our next upgrade. Just found your channel. Liking it! Thanks for sharing
Love the floor plan. We traveled with 2 dogs. We had 2 doors in our camper. We bought a mesh metal sheet and were able to cut sheet in half to cover enough area to protect the screen doors.
For the dogs, we got screen magnets. they stick to the screen and the dogs will see the shapes instead of jumping through the screen.
These work at the lake too for elderly guests who keep walking into screen doors 😂😂
Very nice job to you both on this video. Great camper.
Awesome tour you guys! Great job! Thank you!
Thanks for watching!
Excellent tour and great help. You are very good!
After all the problems we've had with our 2018 R-Pod (I posted a list of issues in your previous R-Pod video) we are also planning to upgrade to something bigger and better. With your new Grand Design, you've given us another unit we need to check out!
Oh wow! Those Grand Designs are so nice! Congrats, you two! Rpods are super cute campers, too but this is a sweet upgrade! Thanks for the tour. 😊
We love our Grand Design so far!
I don't have a positive thing to say about Forest River or Rpods.
Very nice, thank you for sharing 🤠
Nice floor plan and tons of features! Great tour.
Let’s gooooo! 🏕
Went from a 187 rpod to a 287rlts. From part time to full time. Enjoy the trip. It's a wonderful journey
We just bought an Inspire XLS 22RBE - very similar - thanks for the great video!
We went to look at that model, didn’t find it, and left with the MLE instead. Here’s to happy camping in 2021!
Great video review. Have the same unit in a 2023. Baggage storage is a little small, but a great size RV for couples. Our first upgrade was to Change the locks on the baggage compartment.
Pulling it with 2013 Chevy Tahoe. Will be heading for a short maiden voyage.
My next RV thanks for reviewing
Great Video by normal "folks" just sharing your thoughts and experiences. Keep up the great work and happy trails to you both!
Really good review. I'm thinking of buying one of these in the same model. Seems to have everything my wife and I need.
I have have neck and back issues, too, and the upgraded mattress is one of the best upgrades we did with our new trailer. Beautiful trailer, by the way.
Thanks for that tip! We have a 4” mattress topper, but a mattress upgrade could still be in order. Mind sharing what mattress you went with?
Our trailer only can fit an RV Queen, so we special ordered it from and national chain here in Canada. It was a it brand like Sealy, or Serta. It cost a obiut $500. It will cost much less in the USA. Believe me, it was worth every cent.
Nice video. Thanks !!
looks like you guys are set to go. i've heard good things about the Grand Design Imagine.
Hope you find yourself doing well. We are going to follow your lead and sell our Rpod for a 22 MLE. Thanks for showing us the way!
Aaaw! Love it!
We went from a 2018 RP180 to a 2020 22MLE. Had some great times seeing the country with the RPod, but the Grand Design is so much more comfortable while still being a practical size and weight. Enjoy!
Did you consider the Cougar 22MLS with King Bed and window over the bed and window in the bathroom and extra window in the side of the slide? Why did you dismiss it?
@@peterdement We did not look at that model when we were shopping. Was it available in late 2019? Looks nice from the pictures.
Wow..great rig..hope it does you well..can't what for the first trip!!!.
Safe travels.
PS if you do put plexiglass on the bottom of the screen door..just drill a lot of small holes just big enough to stop the dog's damaging the fly wire but big enough to let airflow!!.😎🇺🇲
Very nice RV considering like y’all said you live in area where you have colder weather if you’re storing in a non covered area you should consider a cover for the RV
Great info and wonderful couple!
Thanks!
Good Job guys.
She’s amazing!
We love it!
New to your channel! Thanks for all the information.Happy camping!!!
Welcome aboard! Thanks for watching.
I would recommend you put another cover over the bathroom vent. The plastic covers can dry out in the sun and crack. I learned that the hard way! Hope you enjoy your couples camper as much as we do ours.
Congrats on your new Grand Design. My wife and I are looking at them also. I grew up camping in everything from tents to a Class C Motor home. My wife is new to the idea. We rented a Jayco unit which was similar in design to show her that setup is quite easy and all the creature comforts of home. I am still trying to decide which model is best for us. I looked at the 17 MKE also as well as the 21 BHE. We dont need all the extra beds so if I go that way, I will immediately remove both bunks and make that space my office/editing space.
We looked at the 17mke and almost bought it. It’s a nice trailer. We went to look at the RBE and saw the MLE. Price was quite similar to the 17MKE, so that steered us to the MLE. Happy with the choice so far! Happy shopping!
nice jobs. We are from Indiana also and planning on buying a travel trailer in 2023. 22MLE is on the top of our list.
Did you consider the Cougar 22MLS with King Bed and window over the bed and window in the bathroom and extra window in the side of the slide? Why did you dismiss it?
@@peterdementYes. No. (really confused by your response... I did not dismiss anything nor did I write about what else is on on our list). Why are you making assumptions?
Great RV.
Congrats, guys! This is our first season in our 17MKE. We weren’t campers, never owned an RV, and we didn’t really know what we were getting into. But, after 3 trips (we wish it was more!!!), we’ve fallen in LOVE. Grand Design is awesome. And now that we know a little more, we’re already looking to a 22MLE, so we totally get you moving to a new camper after 6 months! A stationary bed seemed like a waste of space at first, but WOW, climbing around and balancing on the “nightstands” just to tuck in the bedding has become tedious. We’re a little old for that. HA! I could go on, but we love the expanded “basement” space, the stationary bed, and the Lazy-Boy/Dinette layout of the MLE. Looking forward to more vids. Cheers! Bryant & Stephanie
Congrats! 🎉
Did you consider the Cougar 22MLS with King Bed and window over the bed and window in the bathroom and extra window in the side of the slide? Why did you dismiss it?
@@LandlockedLovebirds Any new videos coming out?
We’d love to say yes, but life has gotten in the way of filming and editing for the last little while. Hopefully, we can drum up something soon, but no promises.
I have the same distribution hitch and feel its the best you can buy vs chain models. Its squeaks but some spray grease will take care of that
Great to hear!
Love the open floor plan with the bath in the back. A middle bath set up closes off the floor plan- Sort of claustrophobic. Love the recliners right across from the TV and not at an angle. I would love a couples camper like this one! It's the price tag that is the only con for us with this camper. 😞 We just sold our 30' camper and this model could really meet all our needs.
We also love that you can reach the dinette, fridge, and bathroom with the slide in. We’ve had many a rest stop picnic inside.
There are lots of lightly used ones out there now. Problem is that they’re more expensive than we paid new. Hopefully the market shifts back toward normal soon.
Very nice!!
If Darren wasn’t such a giant, maybe he would fit in more things! 😂 Looks really nice guys! Hopefully we can see it in person soon!
Story of my life. 🤣 ~Darren
How tall is Darren? Asking because I'm 6 foot 8 inches, and I just like to have an idea of how much room I would have in this floor plan.
I’m 6’3”. You may check ceiling height, as you might be in a perpetual duck at 6’8”. I did a quick search and ceiling height is 78”.
@@LandlockedLovebirds Yeah I have since saw that as well. Everybody says they want to be as tall as me but....if they only knew...Thanks
Thank you for a great review. My wife and I were looking for a Geo Pro and the salesman showed us the 22 MLE because there were no Geo Pro models to be had. We fell in love with it. Haven't pulled the trigger yet but........I have a feeling we will. Thanks again and happy camping!
Did you consider the Cougar 22MLS with King Bed and window over the bed and window in the bathroom and extra window in the side of the slide? Why did you dismiss it?
@@peterdement Briefly considered it but, there don't seem to be any within a 1000 miles of me.
We first owned the Geo pro but when I saw this video we sold it and bought the Grand Design and we love it.
Don't forget to do a review after some use. Thanks great video.
Will do!
If the bed weighs to much you can always upgrade the gas shocks to make it easier to lift... we love grand design(don’t own but it’s on our short list when we are finally ready to) they make a metal insert for the bottom of the door
Thanks for the suggestion! We added a mattress topper, and I think that added a bit too much weight on those shocks. We’ll have to look for some beefier ones.
Don't be surprised if you find some little things to fix as you go along. As you noted with the RPod, moving down the road shakes things loose and larger, more expensive RVs are not immune, especially since the components (A/C, refer, furnace, etc) are all made by the same companies. When full time we saw many different brands being fixed in the RV parks, including some of the bigger diesel pushers and fifth wheels.
Good luck in your travels.
Great advice! Yes, we figure we will run into a thing or two here and there, and even a bigger thing once in a while. We’ve got a waste tank valve being bothersome and leaky at the moment. Probably some construction debris lodged in there somewhere or something.
We’re hoping for littler issues less often, but we shall see how it goes. 😂 🤞
Slideout roof is not walkable, wouldn't chance it!! We have been out in the med 20's and had no issues. We have a 22RBE and love it! Good job on the walk through!
It’s not on my list of things to try; however, it was billed as walkable. I can’t imagine any need to do so though.
Camping (for some) is not suppose to be like a house BUT we all get to a point where you want to be comfortable when traveling. Nothing worse than having to take two days to recuperate after getting home from a camping trip! I would consider a new (made for you) mattress compared to the factory mattress. A great reference for details on RV's, towing, especially tires and suspensions, is a UA-cam channel, Big Truck Big RV.
This is one of the models my wife and I are considering for our first RV purchase. Looking forward to future videos on how the 22MLE works out for you. Hope you can share more on how it it tows with the F150 when you've had more time with it on the road.
Buy a northwood product, nash or arctic fox.. you'll be happy for years to come, nobody builds them like Northwood
We bought an RV consumer reports guide this year. Northwood was way up there in the rankings!
@@LandlockedLovebirds I believe it, i bought my 1st new trailer in 2015 and a friend who's been in the rv industry for 20 years told me "if you want a trailer for life, buy a Northwoods".. i ended up with a nash 25c and 6 years later, im still impressed with the quality and it's been trouble free, i even lived in it for 8 months thru a winter in Colorado, the trailer laughed at the cold and the snow, zero regrets... safe travels and enjoy your new camper lovebirds..🤘
Same here. My wife and I are on the market for a small RV to tow with our 2021 1500RAM Truck. Curious to hear from you on towing. We sold our 2019 Class A RV since were always stuck in the campground... Thank you for the video on the 22MLE, very nice !!!!!
Nice trailer and upgrade from the Rpod. Your emergency breakaway cable is at your hitch is not connected properly. It's clipped to your chain, but it should be clipped to your truck, either the hitch, or better yet, something not on the hitch.
Just get some heavy gauge Rabbit wire and cut a panel of it the size you need for the lower door screen area. spray paint it black and mount it to the inside frame of the lower screen area with a few self tapping metal screws and flat washers slightly larger than the squares of the rabbit wire. Still get the air flow and plenty stout to protect from the dog clawing events.
Great video
Thanks so much!
Lippert makes a metal screen door protector that will fit into to the bottom section to protect it for the dogs. ~$60 on Amazon.
Thanks! Installed one today. It looks great!!
Great video.
Can you do something on the Bluetooth controls?
Thanks
Lippert makes metal screen door covers that will help to keep your dogs from scratching through the screen door
A relator lock attached to the outside is a good substitute to the key pad
Coleman Mach 10 is awesome. Better quality then Dometic and quieter then Dometic .. I have the Coleman did not want a Dometic. My wife's favorite layout and I agree.
I was able to add a screen door protector from Camco. Part number 43981. It for the most part did well but required me to put some holes in the door to mount it. But it's fairly sturdy and keeps the pet paws off it. I have seen better ones out there but this was relatively inexpensive.
Put a screen protector on today! Works and looks great!
Nice video with all the details. This is a nice camper. Did you camp with the two 60 pound dogs in you iPod?
Have you thought about adding a slide topper?
Thanks! We never tried the dogs in the RPod. We’ve seen people take a couple bigger dogs in them, we just knew it probably wasn’t for us.
We took them out last weekend in the new one though, and it went pretty well. 😃
I’ve looked at the slide toppers but it hasn’t made it to the top of our purchase list LOL. It’ll probably be a future upgrade though.
Plexiglass works! Depending on how tall your dog is.
I have really been looking hard at this. It looks like the perfect couples trailer. It has everything I wanted and almost nothing I didn’t want. Especially the queen size bed, I did not want to king-size it takes up too much room. Keep making videos I really enjoyed this one and I will subscribe to your channel. The only thing missing that I would like to see on it is a rear receiver hitch for a bike rack or a small carrier. I would like to know if that is an option you can add.
Thanks!!
There is a receiver where the spare tire is mounted. I’m not sure the size of the receiver or the weight rating off hand. Most of the recommendations that I have seen suggest adding a bike rack to the trailer tongue to keep the weight forward and avoid sway.
Love this model. Thanks for sharing. Can you get to the fridge and bathroom while the slide is closed?
Yes you can! We often load the fridge while the slide is in, and we’ve even made some roadtrip breaks to eat and use the bathroom in the camper without feeling super crowded.
Cool video! Have you used the heater in the winter yet? We are learning that the bathroom is toasty, but at the bed area, it’s space heater required!
We have used the heater a couple times. Airflow near the bed is pretty low. We do have a ceramic space heater that we use to supplement and save propane.
We asked the dealer to take a look at the ductwork during our warranty repairs, but it seems to be a common complaint. Guessing it’s just too far of a run from the furnace.
We’ve seen some people use adjustable registers in the bathroom and kitchen to force air to the bedroom but others suggest that it isn’t a safe practice.
Nice job. Can you discuss how the F150 is set up, and how the TT goes down the road once you get cross country trip done. Thank you. PS I was told the struts (like under the bed) should be installed rod down, to keep the seals lubed (?).
F150 is 3.5 liter ecoboost v6. 4x4 crew cab with 3.55 axle ratio. It has fords max tow package. Weight distribution hitch is husky centerline with 600-800 lb bars. May go to 800-1200 lb bars.
We’re working on a video now that discusses towing in more detail. Stay tuned.
Thanks for the tip on the struts. I’ll take a look at ours. We swapped mattresses and the new one is too heavy for the struts.
Nice video
Great review of your new rig! Grand Design is a nice unit. Curious if you considered Winnebago travel trailers? Also, what engine is in your F-150? I'm sure your towing is much more enjoyable. Does your truck have the trailer backup assist? If so, have you set it up and used it yet? I have a 2019 F-150 XLT 4x4 w/3.5 Ecoboost. Retiring in 12 months so trying to decide which travel trailer to get. Any information you guys can provide would be greatly appreciated! We plan to travel 4-5 times per year for 3-4 weeks each time. I am a bit concerned with travel trailer build quality and cross country travel though. Any thoughts on long distance travel and build quality with your new rig? Thanks in advance for any information you can help me with.😎
Thanks! Truck is 3.5 ecoboost 4x4 as well. Has max tow package and does include backup assist.
The tongue space is too tight for the backup assist sticker, so I’ve not tried to set it up. I’ve read that you can fudge it a bit and still have ok results but haven’t tried. The truck has been a nice upgrade.
We looked in a few Winnies and liked the feel the of the grand design product better. Lots of similar floor plans though. So far, we’ve been out 3-4 times locally in the imagine and have been very pleased with it. Happy to share any other info where we can. Best of luck heading into retirement. That’s an exciting milestone.
Outstanding walk through video. We are close to pulling the trigger on one of these. Question: @ 21:57 you mention a propane hose without a regulator. Do you have a link to where that can be purchased.
Make sure you have the proper grill. Some have regulators in the hose. Some have them built into the grill. If built in, it won’t work.
This hose has the quick connect for your rv on one end. Just make sure the other end has the proper sized male or female fitting for your grill. Hope that helps.

Don’t have time to read all the comments but, if someone hasn’t said so already, and you are shopping, this trailer should be compared with Keystone Cougar 22MLS. The two trailers are the same size and floor plans are very similar. What I like about the Cougar is the King bed and the factory off-the-grid package that has 170 watts of solar (we upgraded to 340 watts) with both a charge controller and a 1000 watt inverter. In short, the Cougar is ready to go dry camping.
Great Video - we are picking our 22MLE next week!! Do you have a link for the pest cover screens for the furnace exhaust and water heater exhaust?
Sorry. We got ours at an rv dealer. We repurposed from our first trailer. Amazon has all shapes and sizes for cheaper.
Camping world sells a pet screen that is specifically made to fit RV doors so your dogs don't damage your screen door. Do not use your rear bumper for the poop hose. The dissimilar metals of the bumper and the slinky in the poop hose cause electrolysis between the metals and the slinky metal pickles and causes the hose to degrade and leak. Get the under camper plastic tube that is made for the poop hose and you won't need to be concerned about gross poop liquid leaks. Nice video, we are selling our Forest River 202RB to get the larger Imagine XLS 22MLE like yours it is a toss up between your model and the 23LDE. Both are great floor plans (you can get to the bed with the slides in if you want to rest and you are between 2 tractor trailers at a rest stop).
Thanks for the tips. We like the LDE too. Nice to have the bedroom separated from living space.
@@LandlockedLovebirds We also have two large dogs, one German Shepard & a Rhodesian Ridgeback mix (they are very well behaved, so no problems in campgrounds). I hope the pet screen will work for you.
I didn't notice.. does the shower have a recirculating valve to put the hot water back into the tank until it shows up hot? A great option to keep from wasting water while boondocking.
I don’t believe so. The shower is close to the water heater though, so the run is short. You will lose a bit down the drain each use though.
Hello 👋. We are looking at the grand design XLS MKE 2022. How has the built quality been holding up? Great video 👍
Hey! It’s done pretty well. We just got it back from some warranty work. There were odds and ends that needed fixed. A leaky window. A broken drawer. The worst was a screw that backed its way out through the outside wall.
Everything has been repaired and seems to be good as new.
Grand design is the best
Great video, thanks for the info. How tall is Darren? My husband is 6'1" and curious about the shower clearance.
Thanks! I’m 6’2” or so.
Stef you sound like the stef that does the reviews for the sandals video I saw
Great video. I have a 2012 F150 with a 5 liter V8 bad am trying to decide what is the best camper for just 2 people. We are using a R-Pod 190 and are not happy with the build quality as you mentioned in your previous video. We are interested in the same trailer you bought XLS 22MLE, but are concerned our truck with have problems. I’m curious, what engine and transmission does your F150 have? How well does it pulls this trailer on the highway? Are you able to go 70? What type of gas mileage are you getting? Thanks!
Hey Mitchell. We have a 2020 3.5 liter ecoboost 4x4. The truck is rated to tow up to 10,500lbs and has a max payload of 1865 lbs.
I run 65-67 with comfort, as long as winds are calm. The trailer does move the truck around a bit.
We weighed the rig at local cat scales, and we were up against the payload limit, as both axles of the truck were near their max. I’d like to move to a 3/4 ton but just haven’t been able to justify it yet with the amount we use the trailer. Hope that helps.
Great video. What are you towing the camper with?
Thanks! 2020 F150 4x4 crew cab w/ 3.5L eco boost and Max tow package.
It's crazy how expensive R-pods got considering how bare-bones cheap they are. They're so basic and yet people were asking like $35k for them a couple years ago. Still way overpriced. In fact, all of the travel trailers are... But what's crazy is you can get an GD XLS or AIM for the same price range as cherokee's that look like someone went to home depot and then installed all the cheapest material they could find by themselves.
We have a dog and screen door. I went to hardware store and bought aluminum screen protector. Screwed into door easily.
Can you provide the locations of AC outlets? They are not shown on the floor plan (except for those by the bed). Great video, thanks much.
There is one in the dinette bench. One under the cabinets next to the fridge and one on the other end of the cabinets.
Each bed cubby has one, and I think there’s one on each nightstand by the bed too. And one in the bath.
There’s also one outside near the middle of the trailer and one in the pass through by the control panel
I think that’s it.
Great video
How does your f150 pull your new travel trailer.
Thanks! It does ok, but we’ve tossed around the idea of a 3/4 ton here and there. We made it to Colorado and back from Indiana with no real issues. It’s light enough though that wind and trucks move us around pretty good.
