Our First upgrade was a 50 gal auxiliary tank. We always fill up after the day of traveling, and we are unhooked from the 5th wheel. We can do 700 miles pulling fifth wheel, 1600 mile with just the truck.

Hi Chad, All you did was run out of fuel. Its the sme thing when you change you fuel filter. Simple fix Do Not Try and Start! Just cycle your fuel pump 6 six times. No foot on brake, Push to start listen for the fuel pump to cycle six times when it is done cycling your fuel rail pressure is good and should start. This condition is no different that when you change your fuel filter. Hope this helps. Maybe see ya on the road. P.S. Ret. USCG Later Dave

Hey Chad. Just thought I’d leave you a comment to say thank you for your videos. I’m a diesel technician for ford, my son is 3 and absolutely loves everything about my job. Wants to help me fix whatever he can. He walks around the campgrounds with us just to point out different kinds of trucks. He’s a little ford fan and if we watch a camping video the truck has to be a ford or he will ask for your videos. lol he asks to watch this particular video everyday to help you crank your truck up as he says. He also knows every word to the songs that play while you are driving. 😎 just a proud dad here. Take care!!

Thanks Guys, one of the things I've always liked about your videos is you share the good and the bad and never try to shift the blame. Plus your followers have great comments. So in this one I learned about cycling my fuel pump six times should I ever run out of fuel. I'm retired military and retired law enforcement, the two careers made me super cautious. I tend to try to not go below 1/3 tank. I'm patting myself on the back right now for that rule. Safe travels and keep the content coming.

This is Ann's Husband Jack. For years now I have had a 50 Galon fuel tank in the bed of the truck. It drains directly into the fill line of the fuel tank. I don't use truck stops because their prices are 30 to 50 cents higher than a gas station a couple of blocks off the main highway. We unhook almost every night. When I know I need fuel I go to a local gas station and fill up! I drive a Ram 3500 and tow a Solitude 390 RKR. I enjoy your videos very much! Hope to see you on the road sometime!

We spent some time in Fredericksburg a few years ago. Fun area to visit. We headed south when we left and turned a corner at one point and what did we see? A pasture full of camels, I kid you not! I was hoping you would see them. Several travel days in a row can really be rough. We recently did four travel days in a row, never again! But, maybe it’s our age, I’m 75 and my husband is 78. LOL We too have a diesel story; rv travel is an adventure! Daisy is adorable as always, “where’s Mom, where’s Mom! Safe travels! No more drama!

  • @Lumpschlevot

I think you ran it dry. Gotta prime the system, not crank it. Turn the ignition off. Add fuel. Then turn the ignition on for 30 seconds. Then turn off. Do that about five or six times to re-prime the fuel lines. Then crank, it should fire right up. Just like after you change your fuel filters. Maybe next time, don’t let it go below 50 miles to empty. Those sensors are not perfect. Thats a situation where you are running the CP4 pump dry, which can create a huge repair bill (like 15k) 😊. Cheers.

I just sent a message to FINDING OUR SOMEDAY about the Blue Angles coming to Rome, GA on Oct. 18 & 19 th. 2025. Since they have an uncle that has a bus company out of Rome, GA. And they stop buy at least once if not twice a year. Thought it might be a good time hook up with them and your followers for some fun. We live 30 minutes away in Cartersville, GA. We will be there. Were at the last Blue Angles event in Vidalia, GA. along with the onion festival this past April '24. Great show. I guess they move venues every so many years to spread the love. Thought this would give you a big heads up for planning or to coordinate with FINDING OUR SOMEDAY to attend. Our driveway is not level, but you are welcome to stay and park it at our house. We live on top of a little hill / mountain. But you have one way in or out, neighborhood. But you can get in, pre built double sided house made it, you can also. You are more than welcome. Can stay in our house while you are here. Me and my bride ( of 35 yrs. ) . We are retired, if you do not like golden retrievers we have one. I think your dog is Daisy, that was our 2nd goldens name. If you want , you are welcome.
We are only about 20 miles from Rome, GA. Free is good, house to stay in, GOOD. I also am the cook of the house. Don't judge me against Cody though. He makes me look like I am still in high school going thru home exec.

Ya know. When this happened to Chad I wondered how can someone run out of fuel with today’s tech. Well today on my bucket list NJ to Yellowstone, Sturgis and Wyoming trip I ran out of fuel at the PA and Ohio border with gauge showing 49 miles to empty about 3 miles from service area. Roadside put 5 gallons in and I put 46 gallons in when I got there. I have the 49 or 50 gallon tank F450. Gotta ask. How does Ford design these gauges cause their chit is broke. Haha. Back to my rule of never below 1/3 or 1/4 tank.

Ford 6.7 diesels have a really fragile fuel system. The high pressure pumps grenade pretty often, I see this over and over on Daves Auto videos. Seems like the most reliable diesels are the 12 valve Cummins and the 7.3 Fords. I was a GM tech and the Duramax would stretch their head gaskets, even at low mileage. I don't think that the modern day American diesels are very reliable. And, they all cost about about 100 grand. No Thank you.

After watching the out of fuel episode, and owing a F450 and being a master auto mechanic with Ford certification; you need to be aware that u have a Bosch cp 4.2 injector pump on your 6.7L diesel. It is extremely vulnerable to catastrophic failure which you have set in motion by running the truck out of fuel/lubrication. You will at some point experience continued damage to your high pressure injection pump, which will leave you stranded and cost over 8 grand to repair. To stop this from happening (and it will happen and leave u stranded), I recommend a DCR replacement injection pump kit from S and S diesel motor sport part # 6.7F-DCR. It costs us about 2000.00. I put one on my F450 and have no worries as it can sustain running dry or contaminated fuel. Also recommend changing your cold side turbine tube. The cold side turbine on your vehicle has extensive history of blowing apart and leaving plastic fragments all over the engine. Replacement for for turbine cold and hot side can be purchased from sinister diesel for about 750.00. If you are in or around the Texas Hill country near Blanco Tx stop by, and I can show this to ya and how to install. Questions call me 210 8436808, Mark.

I did the CP4 to DCR conversion on my '19 F450. Truck only had 20,000 miles and that CP4 was rusted. It wasn't a matter of if, but when that pump was going to fail. Some may cringe at the thought of spending 4,000 for DCR and install labor but the insurance of saving 10 to 15 grand for entire fuel system in case of a pump failure relieves a lot of stress. If the DCR isn't doable, the S&S Disaster Prevention Kit, with Hot Shots Diesel Extreme additive is highly recommended.

As chad was cranking it, I was thinking "on the next episode, we have to replace our fuel pump".
Not sure on Fords, but on a ram, you cycle the truck on and off (not cranking) to get the lift pump to prime the injection pump so the injection pump doesn't run dry.

    • @SticksBlog
      @SticksBlog 3 місяці тому

I'm pretty sure Ford is the only one that still uses them. However, Ram and GM really failed with the low pressure side, which made it worse for their applications and was the reason for many of their failures. Ford did a much better job in this respect, but they are still susceptible to failure, and especially when treated the way they were in this video. The best thing to do here is to replace the CP4 with a S&S DCR pump.

No doubt. Find it hard to believe they would run a tank so low! Any contaminates in a full tank of fuel are concentrated with just a few gallons left.

Just a tip Chad...just about all of our later built vehicles have two fuel pumps. One is a low pressure pump that moves the fuel to the high pressure fuel pump. There are many designs but the basics are the same so the last thing you want to do is to run it out of fuel because the fuel acts as a LUBRICANT & a COOLANT for the pumps. When you run out of fuel, the fuel pumps and lines are then full of air so when you fill the tank back up, all of that air has to get out of the system which is a cluster and the only pump to do that is the low pressure or "lift pump". There's no need to run the starter on the engine when this happens, simply turn on only the ignition or run and cycle off then on then off about 4 to 5 times to get the air out of the system. Once that is performed, the engine should start up. Others have mentioned this as well. Too bad there's no section in the book about this.
Note, its not a good practice to run the tank down that low often...those lift pumps depend on the fuel to keep them cool and lubricated so when you are down to a few gallons, the pump is not submerged in fuel as much and begins to heat up thus reducing the life of the pump. So, when the tank is about 1/4 full, its best to fill up then vs. later. The same goes with the high pressure pump which is very expensive in parts and labor to replace. Its not worth it...fill up sooner vs. later and change the fuel filters more often than the book says as well as the engine and transmission and transfer case fluids. Lube is cheap...repairs are not. Don't forget the axle lube as well.
Lucky for you this happened where it did vs. a couple of miles away.
