klaus jespersen a lot of insurance companies void your claim if you have told social media your going away and your house will be empty. Your so right never tell the world your going away
Before I traveled to Europe for the first time I was told to be aware of scammers and that people in Paris like to do a ring trick. This is when the person drops a ring in front of you and pretends that they found this ring and will ask if it’s yours then they will try to give it to you and ask for a reward. Well on my last day in Paris that happened to me but there was a woman in front of me and it happened so fast that you don’t think that you are being scammed but once I realized what was going on I quickly walked away. I also experienced someone grabbing my arm and trying to put a bracelet on me to make me pay for it. Be aware of your surroundings and it’s okay to be stern and hold your ground with people who are trying to take advantage of you.
Karah Wilson OMG same thing happened to me. Only it was an old man , it happened in front of the Louvre Museum. My dad gave him 5 euros to stop bugging is because he was afraid we were being distracted , the man cursed and told my dad he was cheap . I still have the ring, it was an unexpected souvenir.
Still not sure if i lost it or got stolen but i had 50 euros go missing from me in the madrid airport. Also backpack travel tip! if you have a backpack that only has a zipper closure i use a safety pin to put through the whole on the metal handle of the zipper and then through the fabric on the backpack. that way if someone was standing behind you trying to unzip your backpack, the safety pin would stop them. Therefore giving you more time to catch them in the act!
As a traveler I think it is really easy to get caught up on the wonderlust of the journey that we tend to overlook safety!! Thank you for sharing this video with some awesome tips!!
Two things - Wouldn't locking your bag point out that their is valuable things inside? Someone close to me told me once not to lock my bag due to that reason. I am a safety nerd and locked my bags anyways just in case. I have found that dressing like a local is difficult especially when going to many different regions. How'd you suggest being neutral? I lost my phone on my recent travels because I let my guard down. I struggled for a day and a half. Getting to a new location and buying a new phone. Simple as setting the phone down and forgetting it. I learned the most through adversity. Don't be afraid of uncertainty. Embrace it! Great tips Nadine!
Jemike5 I checked websites for stores I knew were popular in the area before I went to Belgium, got some idea of what people wore, and checked people in the backgrounds of travel blogs. But in general (at least for what I saw in Belgium and France), they dress up a bit more than Americans on a weekend. Not as into boxy unisex t-shirts, shorts, sandals (even in summer) or wearing athletic shoes when not working out, from what I saw in a small town, not a beach. They kept it casual with jeans or skirts and cool sneakers, more tailored shirts in causal fabrics. Also a big tip-off that you’re an American tourist can be how loudly you speak (apparently we can sound harsh and grating) so it’s appreciated and draws less attention anytime you can be respectful of local customs. Basically read the room, see how others around you act and do the same, hope that helped!
Peru! I had both my credit and debit card info stolen, they made a new card and took money out of the ATM in both cases. The bank called me when I was in Chile, The ATMs there mostly seem to have a device that reads cards and I will definitely be more likely to bring a wad of cash to exchange money ANYwhere I go from now on.First my debit was disabled, then my credit, when I was trying to buy a plane ticket out of Chile to go home! Very very inconvenient and frustrating. Peru really left a bad taste in my mouth, unfortunately. Good video, Nadine!
I would add to have easy access to addresses or numbers that will allow you to cancel your CC if they get stolen. Happened in Paris and I was able to use the CC app to cancel them and had replacements in two days. AND be careful but don't let fear keep you from exploring! - Henry
When I was in Berlin at a church camp a stranger approached me and my friends, the stranger asked us to sign a protestation paper (thing). We were instinctively suspicious about the situation but we thought ah it’s for a good cause and it’s just our first names. To sign that was a HUGE mistake, from nowhere a group of people surrounded us and started to ask for donations. We thought it was a demonstration against discrimination but they wanted money. We started to panic, and luckily one of my friends just burped really really loud so that other tourists/people turned around, and in that moment I just grabbed her and the others and ran as fast as we could away from the crowd and in to a tourist information place. Even if we might have overreacted we later saw signs that warned the public for similar situations. I hope this comment is useful to someone. Stay safe ✌️ (Sorry for my bad english)
I've fallen for scams in the US where I live where people tell sob stories of their incredible misfortune and need a certain amount to pay for a tow truck or tank of gas or whatever. Also in Morocco, assume any local that talks to you is trying to get money out of you. Offering to show you the way to a place and then asking for money afterwards is the most common one. For anywhere, if a person asks "is this your first time in (country/city)?" and then "do you speak any (local language)?" Very likely they want to take advantage of you.
Awesome video and so true!!! I've also found that, if I have to GPS where I'm going, memorizing the directions beforehand so that I'm not walking around, distracted, with my phone out, is really helpful . . . love your videos! :)
I was just in Barcelona and by my hotel there was a known pigeon poop man who would squirt something that looks like bird poop on you then he would run up to “clean you up” and steal your wallet
BeautyByEwa that's a common one . I had one similar in Bangkok where pigeons were flustered when a bag of bird seeds was tied to my bag , luckily I got away in the confusion
what?? omg. we are from Barcelona and have never seen that. ugh there are too many scams, even more in the top touristic cities :/ Sorry you had that experience in Barcelona!
Love this! I came across a woman in Germany who shoved a rose in my hand and begged for money! Also some beggars will approach you and recite a sob story in multiple languages just to get you to pay.
2 years ago we went to a local market in jamaica ocho rios and my boyfriend forgot to take off his golden necklace..someone ripped it right off his neck.. i noticed two creepy guys before and felt like they we're watching us but i had to watch our son so i didnt really pay attention.. two of our friends from jamaica and my boyfriend ran after that one guy but they couldnt find him.. KEEP UR EYES OPEN GUYS ...even if u feel save..having local friends with u does not make u uninteresting for those people
My grandparents were in Barcelona last year when a young couple came up to them and asked for change for train ticket. They asked for directions and meanwhile somehow managed to steal all their cash!
By Roma Termini in Rome I had an English woman stop my friend and I to ask for Euros to call her family because "someone stole her purse" and she was very persistent. Also by Roma Termini at our hostel a guy came up to the desk staff asking for directions somewhere and stole the employees phone right off of the desk. They're crafty and ballsy, scammers are
Love all of these tips! I am guilty of keeping my phone in my back pocket and placing my wallet or phone on the table at restaurants. Luckily, neither one has been stolen!
The last time I went to Paris, I went to Sacre Coeur and there were groups of people almost blocking the paths up to it, so you had to go between them - you could see it was a scam - and they tried to put a bracelet on my wrist and would then ask for money for it. It was horrible and I didn't spend long there because I felt so on edge.
I have really begun to get into the idea of traveling over the past few months. I’m still trying to convince my parents to even think over the idea before all of the planning comes into play. I was just wondering if anybody had any tips or ways that I could reapproach the subject with my parents to show that traveling would be good.
Thanks for great tips! I haven’t been scammed myself but happened to my parent. It involves money. They entered a small boutique and wanted to pay for a shoe, gave them $50 dollar bill and was waiting for the change. They accused my parents of not paying which did they did. Really scary because they threaten to call the police so my parents left the shop and lost $50 right there.
Really helpful video, thanks! We also started travelling and vlogging now and were wondering how you take care of your electronics? Do you have a portable safe? Or do you just choose your accommodations carefully?
When I was in Thailand we took the night train from Bangkok to the coast so we could transfer on a boat to Koh Phangan. An Aussie guy got on the train with his older father. I spoke to them a little and they came for dentist work but also a nice holiday. They were going out to the islands too, cant remember but think they were off the Koh Samui. Then once we were a few stops in someone else got on who had tickets for their seats. Turns out their tickets were fakes which they bought from someone at the station who they thought was reputable. The poor guys had to get off the train in the middle of the night and in a town where hardly anyone spoke english :( I always wonder what ended up happening. Im sure they would have just jumped on the next train and bought a ticket or something.
Fanny packs are a life saver!!! Especially small ones you can easily tuck under your shirt. I have one for running that I keep just my phone and ID in while running. I also use it when going out because I can fit my phone, one card, ID and cash in it perfectly.
The only "scam" I have had an issue with is a pick pocket in Rome. However I caught her hand in my front pocket as she was pulling my money out. Hint: Be aware of anyone that touches you for no good reason. In this case she had a sign that she touched my chest area to blind me from what she was doing. Interesting to look someone in the face when they get caught.
you forgot sympathy scams like in Indonesia where they ask you to buy food and turn around and sell it. or NYC where the lady on the E track has a different disease everyday and she needs your help to pay for the surgery.
Here's a tip for walking around with open pockets (basketball shorts etc) Even just any clothing. While walking when you are swaying your arms, every sway forward and backward make sure your thumbs brush up against your pockets to make sure your things are still there. Does that make sense? If not ask me any questions by replying below. It gets easier with time and you don't think about it. This is how I always walk no matter where I am. I've caught someone red handed and gotten them arrested this way in my hometown (Stockton, CA. Shitty place lol. Guard is always up) It's something most criminals/pit pocketers don't look for and an extremely easy way to check your pockets consistently instead of walking around with your hands in your pockets. That's just awkward. Hope this tip helps! Fanny packs are the shit too. A small one to tuck under your shirt is the best.
Don’t wear a baseball hat with your favorite team on it. I did that overseas and trust me, you’ll become a target. I was targeted by the police to pay a bogus ticket or pay cash at half price to tear up the ticket.
I m always so exciiiited for your neew videos will you ever comee to morocco i would loove to meet youu keep going with your amaziing videooos loooovee youuu ❤
T Kansas City Pain I’ve heard Japan is ridiculously safe , all though anything can happen. Also I think Japan would be more theft free than other places just because they tend to have more respect for each other and their country than most places. There are guys in Venice, Italy who will shove some rice in your hand for you to feed pigeons. Look out! Because a handful of rice will cost you €5! (I didn't pay that, gave them €1 and left)

You should be careful with telling people on social media about your travel plans. To avoid burglary in your own home while you're away
klaus jespersen a lot of insurance companies void your claim if you have told social media your going away and your house will be empty. Your so right never tell the world your going away
That actually happened to one of my parents friends, they posted it on Facebook and their whole house was burgled

Hi Nadine, would you do a video on how to select hostels? How to know which are safe, good location ect. Thanks .... love your videos
THIS. Also, I am terrified of bringing bedbugs with me home. Surprised they were not mentioned in this vid.

I got scammed once during one of my military travels. Was outted $260. Its not a great feeling at all.

Very good advice, Nadine. I kind of detected that some of it was based on mistakes that you have made, so that makes it all the more valuable.
Really helpful video, thanks! We also started travelling and vlogging now and were wondering how you take care of your electronics? Do you have a portable safe? Or do you just choose your accommodations carefully?
i keep mine locked up when i stay in hostels!
Always look forward In watching your videos . Good tips !!!

So scared to go solo travelling now. HELP!
@heynadine, have you ever been scammed or robbed?
Would love to see a video about HOW to dress like a local :)
Erin Shay Horrigan I guess she means blend in and not wear anything too fancy or designer
I always assume anyone who is selling me anything is trying to rip me off 😅
Me too! Same for taxis!
enjoy your videos, lots of good information. keep up the great work!!! ps i drive a mini too !
Awesome content ! Really loved the images ! I wish I'll be able to get here one day
Had to utilizing these tips on my recent trip to NYC (which I’ll have a video up shortly about)
Great advice..will keep it in mind on our upcoming trip!
Great tips Nadine. Another reason why we don’t wear watches or jewelry when on the road.
thanks so much, going to Tokyo soon and this is going to prove useful!
Great advice, Nadine! Thanks for sharing :)
Very helpful, thank you ☺️🙌
So many scammers in Paris and Rome.
The problem is ,I'm Irish and because we are so pale in comparison to someone from Spain or Italy they know straight away your not a local
I take a card, some cash, and phone with me when going out at night. Then I won't lose everything. Zipper pockets save time.
Jemike5 I put the card and money in my phone case and simply make sure and keep my phone safe
Fanny packs are a life saver!!! Especially small ones you can easily tuck under your shirt. I have one for running that I keep just my phone and ID in while running. I also use it when going out because I can fit my phone, one card, ID and cash in it perfectly.
Speaking of scam there is a good show Netflix called scam city if you are into trading i recommend. you to watch it .
The only "scam" I have had an issue with is a pick pocket in Rome. However I caught her hand in my front pocket as she was pulling my money out. Hint: Be aware of anyone that touches you for no good reason. In this case she had a sign that she touched my chest area to blind me from what she was doing. Interesting to look someone in the face when they get caught.
dspid2404 omg what did you do afterwards? Were there any police near by?
No. I just pushed her back and walked away.
I'm glad it worked this way. I just worry about the possibility that they might have pocket knives .
you forgot sympathy scams like in Indonesia where they ask you to buy food and turn around and sell it. or NYC where the lady on the E track has a different disease everyday and she needs your help to pay for the surgery.

I wear a coat or jacket with inside pockets to store valuables and documents
Paul Green what about when it's warm out? What do men do? I'm really curious, do you use a money belt?
Thx for this 👌🏽

The dumbest thing ive ever seen even though it wasnt real was in the movie Taken when not even 5 minutes after the girl and her friend got off the plane her stupid friend told that random man where they were staying.
Is it worth it to buy travel insurance?
KMaeRader Absolutely. Buy travel insurance every time. Just in case.
yes! saved us tons when our flights were delayed/cancelled so we got them reimbursed
You are awesome!!! 💋
I had someone chat to me on the Barca metro and be friendly . As I walking off the train I noticed her. Putting her hand towards my pocket
s125ish Then what happened?
The Bullshooter I noticed by luck as I turned around . Just goes to show of someone is friendly
I wanted to know if you confronted her, and if you called any authorities/security, and how that panned out.
Yea, humanity sucks sometimes.
The Bullshooter no I walked ahead or let her pass . Luckily I didn't have anything in my pocket s

There are guys in Venice, Italy who will shove some rice in your hand for you to feed pigeons. Look out! Because a handful of rice will cost you €5! (I didn't pay that, gave them €1 and left)
Basically, a good rule of thumb is don't take anything from anyone. Usually they will tell you to pay for it.
please put official subtitles !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
cool
Don't forget to wear a helmet
What up...Bee Nadine :)
good video
Hey
Nice video ^_^
Hey, I think your videos are pretty cool. And also, I was very surprised when I found out you were 30! You look like 23 or something
30??? Whow she looks way younger!
Yea! She made a video about it! She celebrated 30 in Greece! She could still pass as a college student
I love you Nadine please mary me!!!
