Phev’s are going to be around for a while and for many people they are the best option until charging infrastructure and the price of new ev’s come down.
David Stewart sooo many youtube channels struggle with this! They will spends thousands on video and audio equipment and forgot about audio levels in post production.
Exactly. Well, at least they didn't blast our ears with a silly intro song after we turned up the volume for their low voice. That woulda made me shut the video immediately.
Any chance we'll get to see you review the smaller X3 PHEV soon as I imagine, whilst still expensive, it will appeal to a wider audience of company car drivers?
The only thing X5 owners need to worry about is how long it takes to get to the council planning office, transport the dogs, and remember little Johnny needs picked up from the train station on his half term break.
Is Android Auto available now? Also does it have dash cam recorder built in using on board cameras? Also You didn't demonstrate phone key to unlock the car with Android phone. I think you left out a lot of features.
To a complete electric / hybrid dummie like me, can someone explain how this gets over 200mpg ? I must be missing something as she has just said electric has got a range of around 50 miles per 7hr charge and the petrol engine does approx 30mpg .... how does it then jump to 200 ? please excuse me if I'm being thick
Yes, until to get to the final voice over which is much louder. It's not hard to get this right - any video editing program worth it's salt should have the tools to fix this.
Suggestion : when you do review show us car interior , exterior and boot space in detail too. In 8+ min video , 6+ min camera was on your face which is disappointed. Your doing good job but these improvements will make you Exellent reviewer
You mentioned in the video " you can charge up the battery", did you mean while driving on gas? I wasn't able to find any other material to support the fact. Can you clarify?
Why not choose a pure electric like Tesla model Y or Id.4 or Skoda Enyaq (all will soon be available). Then you can go far on pure electric, and do something good by emitting a lot less CO2 and not pollute the air locally some times. For instance if you drive on gasoline/diesel in citys, people in the citys being next to you when driving, has to breathe the harmful exhaust smoke from your car. Plus the BMW X5 Hybrid 45e weighs 2,435 kg, Tesla model Y Long range weighs 2,003 kg, which is helping the model Y be more environmental friendly.
I think if they can get the battery up to a range of 100/150km that actually would be a overall good solution. It will cover people driving longer distances to work and for the people who cannot charge at work.
Powerful petrol/gasoline engine in a PHEV does not necesarily means low efficiency like in this BMW X5 PHEV 23 MPG when battery is depleted. It means still it is a mild hybrid as used by BMW for very long time. That is a shame since a trully parallel hybrid can deliver high fuel efficiency as it is for instance in much larger 6 cylinder PHEV in Chrysler Pacifica PHEV. Also the pure EV range is too short 30 miles EPA for this huge battery of 24 kWH which once again means very poor EV efficiency vs 32 miles pure EV mode in Chrysler Pacifica PHEV achieved from 17 kW battery in a much larger and heavier vehicle. I understand performance orientation. However Toyota RAV4 Prime PHEV is a performance car which can deliver high efficiency having 42 miles pure EV EPA range from 17 kWH battery AND close to 40 mpg when battery is depleted. It is a shame BMW chose not to bother with efficiency is such a nice vehicle. The fact BMW CHOSE not to bother with making the car efficient is providing a very low power onboard battery charger of 3 kW to make charging painfully slow and discourage most owners from charging and just refueling with petrol/gasoline. Once again both Toyota and Chrysler provide 7.5 kW onboard chargers for non luxury vehicles. To prove my point Mercedes Benz GLE 350 de PHEV provides CCS fast charging capability for its battery. Even Mitsubishi Outlander PHEV provides fast charging of the battery. It looks like BMW took its gasoline/petrol X5 and slapped a motor and a battery to it without any R&D needed. This fact is displayed by haphazardly placed battery greatly reducing cargo capacity in the trunk/boot vs very carefully placed battery in Mercedes Benz GLE 350 de PHEV with larger battery placed in such a manner that cargo capacity is not reduced at all. Boasting performance once again in not a case since Volvo can achieve better performance in its PHEVs from 4 cylinders as it does Porsche Cayenne PHEV from 6 cylinders. And if someone is really into performance PHEV SUV that customer in North America has a crazy fast choce of 6 cylinder Lincoln Aviator PHEV with about 660 HP with close fuel efficiency when battery is depleted with also Android Auto play included. It is extremely hard to prove this BMW sale case beyond corporative incentives for battery size in UK and Europe, driving pure EV in the large cities such as London and HOV lanes capability in places like California.
Dont be fooled, folks. Mitsubishi Outlander PHEV does 38mpg on motorway and even better with flat batteries, 22 to 28 miles in EV mode only in town, has Quick charging and up o 80% capacity in 25 minutes. I just wish I had 24kwh battery instead of 12kwh :/
That is the thing about PHEVs when you get used too the Electric mode and start loving it, you just wish you could have a 50 mile range, then a 100 then a 200 soon you would be better off getting a BEV .
BMW knows 90%+ of its target audience will not want to own its cars for more than 6 years, so that's why that battery warranty is enough. You people have to stop thinking "they could just give you more." There is a cost associated with warranty and it goes into liabilities on the balance sheet and turns into a real cost down the road. They obviously wanted to minimise cost and offer more bang for the buck vs rivals. The battery part of it is just an excuse to get around lower EU emissions standards. Real BMW owners will want to use that real engine more often than on paper.
Am afraid that the New Koenigsegg with a 2litre 3 cylinder turbo engine SHAMES ALL ...imagine that engine in a normal car tuned for normal driving and Not hyper sport car and it has electric motor
I love your reviews but this is a manufacturer side-stepping the whole reason to go electric and is cynical marketing at its worst. Only the dimmest will think this is environmentally friendly. Bad BMW 😠
I get your point but these cars will help to ween the EV doubters. Lets say you live 15 miles away from where you work, but have to do a long trip regularly or have elderly relatives/kids at uni etc who are a few hundred miles away and want to be able to get to them as quickly as possible in an emergency. Given that set of circumstances a full EV might not fit the bill, this car provides the solution. You could still do 80%+ of your driving in EV mode knowing that if you suddenly have to make that long journey you are not going to have to stop and charge. I know it's not where we want to end up, but as an interim solution I think it works well.
@@dwftube I take your point but how about this as a more practical solution. Buy a full ev for your regular needs; if you need to do a longer trip rent an appropriate vehicle . You have to be pretty well off to have a car like that sitting on your drive just in case you need it in an emergency.
@@robertlangham2356 That's certainly one solution that I have read a lot of people with EVs use. But it is a hassle and no good at all for emergencies. People who buy this type of car want this type of car any way and there is only one full EV option in this part of the market (iPace) and it's not really the same thing. So it's better that people who won't consider that have an option where they can do most of their miles on electric. Progress can be made with pragmatism.
How can you review this car without mentioning the Range Rover Sport p400e which has better spec, greater wading depth in flood water more economical with a 2 litre engine when on petrol only compared to 3 litre bmw. Very poor, clearly you are concerned bmw won’t lend you another car if you tell the truth. Disappointed
Had a p400e for 6 weeks, didn't hit its EV range numbers once and was in and out of dealer with issues. its since been returned and after an extended weekend test drive - i now take delivery in june of X5 45e. In my opinion the BMW is the better drive, EV range was higher and the specification inc latest idrive is way ahead of JLR.
alix pennycuick Hi, I have a p400e as you probably guessed and I considered the 45e not least because of longer ev range but the larger less fuel efficient engine in the BMW was a negative for me and the interior just doesn’t match up to the RRS, there is also an issue with the reduced wading depth for the BMW and after all the floods around where we live from the river severn I decided to stay with the RRS, both are great cars though. Michael
Thank you for continuing to cover PHEVs, unlike certain other youtube channels that think BEV is the only thing worthwhile to cover.

Wow this is an excellent review.

Great review. Thank you. Are you going to review the Mercedes GLE PHEV? So we can compare :)
Thanks for making these videos; very informative.
Very detailed and well-thought-out review, thank you!
As always your reviews are fantastic! Please, please, please review the Mercedes GLE de. On paper it outperforms the X5 on every level
Excellent video as always. Hybrids like this will prolong the life of the ICE cars. Decent range
Great Review for a good car! Thanks for that!
Thank you. Complete and clear evaluation.
Fantastic reviewer!
The new gle with 32 KW battery 7 KW on board charger and Diesel engine with 60 miles electric range will be the best real world suv
What a fantastic car and what a fantastic review!
does this video have any sound at all?
The only thing X5 owners need to worry about is how long it takes to get to the council planning office, transport the dogs, and remember little Johnny needs picked up from the train station on his half term break.
Super stylish, useful and uber green too
25mpg is hardly green
Great information, thank you
Better than the Range Rover Sport plug in hybrid?
This car is rated at 31 miles of electric range here in the US .
which colour is that?
Great video. And i love the car. Its perfect for the 80% around town and 20% longer journeys each week. And luxury ride and interior. 👍🏻🤗
Er, did you say perfect for around town? What I think you mean is that decent range PHEVs are currently the best compromise.
can this car keep the aircon when the engine is off, like Tesla and other EV cars? thx
Have you heard of any BMW sedans going all electric If not Will they still be making A530E series Or does the plug in hybrid only come in at 330E?
Is Android Auto available now? Also does it have dash cam recorder built in using on board cameras? Also You didn't demonstrate phone key to unlock the car with Android phone. I think you left out a lot of features.
The most mine states it will do is 39 miles on a full charge.
I don’t understand the low charging rate. My E300de may lose out on range but charges at 7.2
