- Hi guys, here's an extra video as I've realised I accidentally missed out a chunk from last night's video during editing!
On the agenda tonight we're taking a look at Rick Derringer performing 'Rock & Roll Hoochie Koo' back in 1973!
Original video - • RICK DERRINGER / EDGAR...

I’ve been playing this song for 48 years and I never get tired of it. I was hoping to see your take on it. Great job. Love it.
Fil, you're a brilliant musician and instructor.
What a great look at one of the best musicians in one of the tightest groups to ever grace the stage.
Let's not forget to mention: when this came out, it was on every radio station and on every jukebox in the USA and stayed there for a long time. So did Frankenstein.
No one did it any better than Rick Derringer and Edgar Winter.
Nice work, Fil! This is one of the most kickin 70’s rock songs. 😎
More Rick!, More Fil!! all Rock and Roll !!! Bonus :-)
If ever they do a Led Zep biopic, they need to immediately cast you as the young Jimmy Page. You have the right look, the right accent and can play Zep tunes as good as Jimmy ever did.
Oh yes Fil can be my JIMMY PAGE!!
Another one?! Haha, have to buy guitar, after all. And learn how to play it, apparently.
:)
Rick and the band were on fire that night. 👍🏼
Thanks. One of my favorite songs.
No complaints here! Make mistakes any ol' time!
1974 was 14 when I seen edger winter with rick deriger they played with first time on stage bad company good show
Another cool Edgar Rick Dan and Chuck song is Free Ride, where Dan is playing a double neck. The intro is Dan playing guitar while Edgar reaches over to play the Bass part. Love it.
Pretty close Fil, pretty close. That was always the case with gigging guitarists back then, pretty close, at least that's what we all would say about each other. I'm sure the same camaraderie exists today. Nice addendum.
We would say "nearly..." LOL 🎸
BONUS! I thought that was a 'stretch chord' and I do think it was "a pull-off". Just to see a part 2 was nice. I think a bit of that guitar breakdown was covered in last night's video but it was good to see it 'in context' with the rest. The rhythm guitarist (his hairstyle) looks outta place, sort of like a kid from the 90's- 2000 going back in time doing a photo/video bomb ala "Marty McFly"! Speaking of hair, we know you like Rick's hair Fil, many of us "doo" too! 🤘😎
Have you heard of OTTA-orchestra? If not I suggest starting with Gretela (live in St Petersburg 2020) and then "Royal Safary" they are mostly instrumental and worth checking out.
Derringer produced johnny and wrote many of johnnys tunes... Wasnt it hang on sloopy that derringer began his writing career with
Loved demo 💥. Thanks Fil. 🤙🏽
Fil, am I the only one that comments on your hair?
@@karenwalker3770 hahaha! I tell Fil on all his posts about his hair. I am an old woman, graduated in the 80's!
please reaction Chanel @Alip_Ba_Ta Guitaris Acoustic Fingerstyle
Add some funk to the strumming like Hendrix and it's amazing!
Now you're talkin'!👍
i believe that's Dan Hartman on bass.... remember his hit, "i can dream about you?"
Hmmm . . . have you considered Black Oak Arkansas' "When Electricity Came to Arkansas?"
I had a vinil long play with a coletanea of rock'n'roll where i could know Kansas, Ted Nugent, Aerosmith, Rick Derringer and others.....
Well, alright!!!! Fil, it'd be a joy to hear you play it in it's entirety. We demand it!
BRIAN AUGER is one of the great musicians. His band Trinity, album Open with Julie Driscoll. Later on he formed Oblivion Express.
Ty Fil
But... What about the rhythm guitar While Derringer is soloing. It's different than the first verse. 🤔
I think I need to watch that performance one more time and pay more attention to the hair. Thank you Fil. For your hair.
Hi there, Really enjoying your videos. :) Watching from the South Island in New Zealand.
This goes off the topic, but it would be nice to hear your comments on video "Did Led Zeppelin Steal "Stairway To Heaven", done by CBC News, featuring Rick Emmett of Triumph interviewed and demonstrating the song structure. He touches the Rock & Roll Hoochie Koo as well as he explains songwriting in general. Providing of course that CBC will allow it.
One of the first cover tunes i learned in high school in 10 the grade. ( 1975) my high school pal ( alex aguilar) was giving guitar lessons & i asked for song / tecnnique instruction & forget the reading music / theory . Lol. Always regretted not learning site reading but as it turns out he never became a famous musician either just another amp builder.
You are a very generous and committed man, Fil. My most sincere gratitude and you just KEEP ON ROCKING!! Oh, yeah! 😎🎸🎸🎶👍
Great Stuff ! C'mon Phil , So what's your take on Anita Carter and Chet Atkins "Freight train Blues ?
Hey Fil, I wanted to ask you to do a video and analysis of Golden Earring’s Radar Love. Thanks.
Fil you're cuter than a rooster with socks on. Playing guitar like butter ..with the instincts of a falcon you hunt those notes down and kill em. Rock on babe.
I was a big Derringer and Winter fan
Love bonus videos 😃😄
Thanks, Fil 🖤🤘🏽
Check out the old rick play this song with ringo star. Its from 2014 I think but wow.
This is the only song I ever heard he played. I preferred Johnny and Edgar Winter.
Now THAT'S Rock and Roll!
Perhaps the very epitome of Rock and Roll.
A great Kootchieanalysis Fil, it's a fantastic track
Great analysis.love it.
In just love watching how much fun he is having… great times
A great song, he has great vocals. It is an all around a terrific song11😊
Great addendum. (jokingly) I'm glad I didn't have to clean the uPhone. Rick was belting out those vocals. 10 Q so much for the vid.
We called it the "chunky" sound back in the day ... first song I learned to play all the way through. The version on Derringer Live or some of his newer performances of R&RHK show his brilliance to another level. His live solo during this song from the 70's became legendary.
Excellent!
Great job
This is awesome. I love these analysis you do. I didn't know there was so much into it. Thank you for these. Stay safe and take care.
Edgar: people keep asking, where’s you’re brother?
Rick's my sister's neighbor! Great guy, always fun to talk to!!
A bonus video! Thanks!
Another fun video. I wish you could put a crew together and come play some shows in the US. I live in Arizona and could come to Phoenix, of course, but also Las Vegas or San Diego. Any such plans in the works?
Not yet! Covid has to be sorted out first unfortunately!
I need to go back and listen but I'm pretty sure the A part of the intro is simplified compared to the record. All said and done RD is an amazing player and he can do whatever he wants.
I've been trying for 3 years to play this song, looks simple but far from that! 🤟🎸🤟🎸 Nice job Fil 🤟
Nice job Fil you can vaguely here those humbucker s in that Les Paul he's got lol you just about have the sound duplicated
"Hope you all know what I'm talkin' about, the way Fil plays that guitar really knocks me out" !!! More Rick, more Fil, my fuse is lit up like a firecracker 💥🎸🤘Thanks!!
👌 😎, there's an encore. Ta!
Your brilliant!🎸🎸🎸
Thanks!
Very good analysis, Viscount Fil of McCoy.
We used to play this song back in 197-/2/3 - for some reason we began with Byrd’s The Earl of Salisbury, into the song , long solo (aaargh), intro to Fairport’s Walk Awhile, instrumental version of Matty Groves, back into song. We did a harmony on a third on the little riff between lines in the verse.
Apart from that (blushes nervously), it’s so good to see the superb Rick Derringer getting an airing: right from “Hang on Sloopy” he’s been miles ahead of the pack, and a great singer too. As you say, his work with the Winters is always worth a hearing and I don’t think I’ve seen him play a bad note. For some reason, his less frantic stuff has always reminded me a bit of Pete Frampton, God knows why. His stuff with Todd Rundgren - not everyone’s cup of goats, is also well worth hearing!
How you manage, Viscount Fil of Dan, is beyond me. I’m so glad that you sorted out that ridiculous copyright nonsense. I know beyond doubt that an increasing number of people are learning a great deal from your lessons that they do not learn in so many of the new music degrees, whose main qualification is being alive and getting a grant.
Thank you.
Watch their 1st performance of the night where they performed under the Edgar winter group & played Free Ride. Rick played bass.
That song should still be getting regular air time on the radio. One helluva groove.
@markcatron8996 Yes it's up there as is Alright Now & Paul Rodgers/FREE.
What about the rythem guitarist playing the white SG. from thr comment section they said his name was Jerry Weems & was supposedly awol from the army.
Always great to hear your insights on great music. You might enjoy the amazing musical conversation between the sax and lead guitar in "Lilly was Here" performed by Candy Dulfer on her Baloise Sessions 2015 release. Demonstrates how two virtuoso musicians give and take in support of one another which is rare and magical. ua-cam.com/video/B9cNjft0eZs/v-deo.html
If one where to combine these two classic songs
(I'm Your Hoochie Coochie Man - Willie Dixon)
(Rock and Roll Hoochie Koo - Rick Derringer)
You'll end up with Fil Henley "Wings of Pegasus"
laying down some good ole funky groove on guitar.
Way to go Fil 😎
Phil you've got to listen to the version on Derringer Live album. At the 4:00 mark Rick goes into a very EVH Eruption type solo followed by a verse of You Really Got Me! This album was released 1 year before VH 1 too. Very Strange.....🎸 on!
Saw him in the Edgar Winters Group on the Frankenstein Tour. Saw him later in a small club promoting the song and album. He is a great rocker.
Appreciate the time for a classic number like that one Fil
Great analysis, The whole band is great but I'm really impressed by the drumming. It's a small kit but he gets such a big cool sound out of it.
Just shows what a talented drummer can do for a band.
Your phrasing is somewhat off. It is on time but lacking that certain "swing".
Derringer has been putting out such great albums to this day,he does a whole album of his hits in a smooth jazzy way but with an edgr..
This was really awesome. Cheers, Fil! ✌️
Put Johnny W / up against Rick D versions of RRHK
It's ALWAYS good to hear you play..😍 👍🎸
Nice ! Thank you
That was fun-
Have a shave Fil, the beard's not really doing it.
