Reviving a Sunken, Abandoned 1994 Yamaha Waverunner 3 GP

- This WR3 has been through some stuff. It was last registered in 2017, and it came into my life in 2021 after drifting across a lake, sunk as far as possible for a PWC that still has its styrofoam, it was then recovered, and then it sat for quite some time while paperwork was filed, the previous owners contacted, newspaper ads run in an attempt to convince someone to come claim the thing.
But I had no such luck. It would have been easier had someone claimed it... It certainly would have been cheaper had someone claimed it... But nobody did. So now it's mine. And I'm too dumb to part it out, scrap it or do something like that, so I'm going to try to get this thing back on the water.
I believe this is one of those times in life that a man realizes that his financial habits with projects really needs some backing from Bill Gates, Elon Musk, or Jeff Bezos because I have some of the worst ideas...
Anyway, come along and lets see if we can get this thing to do anything more than rot in a watery grave like it was.
I own 3 of these. All three run, 1 needs an drive bearing. I have a service manual on cd if you'd like a copy?! 1 of them also sucked in a boatload of water after my son flipped it! I pulled plugs and finally squirted all the water out eventually from the spark plug holes and ran fine! You can't kill these extremely well built watercraft by Yamaha!
I'm blown away that this machine runs as good as it does, I've had it on the lake since this video, but haven't gotten the video on here just yet.
Recently acquired my dads wave runners, (one of them being a '94 Yamaha waverunner 3) and have been researching and learning as much as I can on them. He never showed me how to take care of them before he past, so trying to find as much content on it as I can. Love that you show what you are doing in these videos, these are so helpful. I will be keeping an eye out for more videos from you.
They are an incredibly resilient machine as you've seen in this video. I have been trying to sell it, it runs so good and would make someone a real nice machine even if it isnt the prettiest, it sure runs good. But I may end up making more videos on it since it seems interest is limited. If there are any things you'd like videos on about the wr3, let me know and I'll film them and get them up here when I can!

Very nice! You'll have a lot of fun with them. I need to finish editing the 2nd part of this skis adventure, it runs, and it zips right down the lake, a bit of cleaning up, and fine tuning and it'll be a nice machine!

Awesome revival! Im hoping to find a running 90s ski to rip this summer then rebuild over winter, will be my first 2 stroke!
There was some really unique ones back then, The Kawasaki TS, SC, plus all the standups were a blast, I'm not great at riding them but it doesn't stop me from trying before giving up and getting back on a sit-down style ski. Hope you find a good one!
Can you help me figure out what the black hose on the back of the digital display goes too? It's not connected to anything and I'm trying to figure it out

I can't decide what to do with this machine. I've tried to sell it, tried to part it out, it runs so good despite its horrible backstory, has phenomenal compression but nobody wants it. Not sure if I should do a full restoration, or give it away to someone at this point. Its such a fun machine, just not very pretty with all its been through.
Hey bro thanks for the questions you have answered for me. I’m doing an oil change. What is the oil capacity? Also gas has been sitting for 4 years ago should I siphon and put new gas?
I would change the gas out for fresh, it'll make it far easier to get it going, I'm not sure of the oil capacity since it's a 2 stroke it continually uses oil so just fill the tank until it's full
I have this Yamaha turns on and has power but when I get into the water and want to accelerate it automatically turns off, any idea of what can I do?

Its about 9ft 6in long, a touch over 3 feet wide, and just under 3ft tall.
I have one of these I picked up It ran two years ago. Should I drain the fuel and oil out of the Waverunner and put new in? Also is it a mixed gas or do you put regular gas in and then there’s a place for oil the injects into the gas? I’m new to Waverunners. Thanks any info would be very appreciated
It should have an oil mixing pump, but mixing in a little oil with the gas is never a bad idea. I think you're on a good track, draining the old gas, putting some fresh in and see if it starts, if not you may need a carb rebuild, I've got a video on rebuilding the mikuni carbs that are on these machines.
What is the best oil to use in this Waverunner?
Best is probably the manufacturers own brand Yamalube, but any good quality 2 stroke oil should work great.

This is the 701cc engine, I believe it's called the 62t in Yamahas manuals and such.

They didn't typically come with flush kits pre-installed, so you'll need to add one if you want to run it for more than a few seconds out of the water.

Pretty sure it's a group 16, I'd get an AGM style, most auto parts places would probably call it a etx16l
Do these Waverunners have a separate gas tank and separate oil tank? And they mix while it’s running. Can you explain that to me. Im gunna pump the old gas and oil out.
Yes, at around 3:00 you can see the larger fuel tank that has a more yellowish color and a smaller bluish looking tank on the right of the fuel tank, that bluish tank is the oil tank. There should be a small pump on the very front of the engine, that is the oil pump, it pumps the oil into the intake above the carb.

There's an abandoned waverunner 3 for $50 bucks looks in good shape i might go pick it up
They are a fun machine, and for 50 bucks you could make your money back parting it out if you can't get it running!

Your local auto parts store should be able to get you an ETX16L or BTX16L depending on their numbering system, that is the battery I put in here, Its an AGM style which tends to be a little pricier but they have lasted better for me.
If you're looking to save a little cash, a flooded battery will work, and your local auto parts place should have some form of those too, they just don't seem to last as long.

I have one of these, it cranks but won’t turn over. I put starting fluid in the carb and it turns over but the next day if doesn’t turn over again? Do you have any advice?

could be fuel lines leaking some air in, or its in need of a carb rebuild, or just putting a primer kit instead of the choke would solve that issue once and for all.

It does indeed come with oil injection, many have been removed by now though.

Carb, you won't see fuel injection on basically any skis until mid 2000s
Whatever you can find that does not have any ethanol in it. Around me that's typically 93 octane at a few gas stations, although one does have 87 octane 100% gas.
My exact same waverunner was last registered in 2004. Runs perfect except the rubber piece with wires running through it into the crank case is out for some reason and I have know idea how to get it back in. Send help
Do you mean the stator wires that go into the front cover? I'm gonna have to take a look to refresh my memory how that is meant to go so I can advise you how to reinstall it lol

@trythistv future me back with more knowledge. I loosened the crankcase cover fix that last problem. I have a new problem now. Everything I run it wide open it ends up dying. I think something electrical is getting hot
Mine was last registered in 2011. Last ran in 2012. Cut it apart and put jet drive into a jon boat.
I want to make a jet kayak, except with something like a supercharged seadoo engine...

I think thats a bit low of cranking amps, usually a group 16 that fits in one of these skis is closer to 300cca

Yes indeed it is!
So it has a oil injection into the gas
My neighbor is selling his rental property and has a 97 760 that was sunk by his son and hasn't been registered since June 2017, said I can have it if I haul it away
760s are decent machines. I'm doing a review video sometime soon on a 96 760cc waverunner.

Oily shmuu is a common sight for me, it doesn't get any more pleasant to see though.

I've got a kinda rough 95ish 1100 waveraider that is missing a few pieces and has a rod through the block you can have for parts if you want it lol, I've been trying to part it out, was hoping to revive it but the hole in the block kinda put the kibosh on that.
