    Yesterday, at the state banquet hosted for the Emperor and Empress of Japan as part of their state visit, we saw the family order of King Charles III appear for the first time. Her Majesty the Queen was wearing her husband’s family order, with his portrait, on her left shoulder above the family order of her late mother-in-law Elizabeth II. The tradition of sovereigns granting female members of their family with a family order containing a portrait medallion goes back as far as the reign of King George IV - and if you want to know more about this fascinating tradition, go and have a look at my longer video on this subject. The order consists of a portrait miniature of the sovereign set within a gold frame embellished with stones and suspended from a coloured ribbon. The order has always been the personal gift of the sovereign and is not automatically granted - and it has been the usual practice since the reign of Edward VII, for the first recipient to be the Queen Consort. So it is no surprise that the Queen is the first person to be seen wearing it.

    The emperor of Japan receiving the Garter is also a time-honoured tradition, as every emperor since Meiji has received the order, they are unique in that they are one of the few non-Christian members in the order's history.

    I wonder if the King will bestow the Order on his granddaughter Princess Charlotte of Wales. She turned 9 in May, the same age that her late Great Grandmother, Queen Elizabeth II and her younger sister Princess Margaret received the Royal Family Order of their grandfather King George V. As the Kings Order strongly resembles that of King George V it would be a sweet nod to his late mother if Princess Charlotte received it at the same age.

    The diamonds set in the oval frame are brilliant cut stones (round) along with step cut stones (rectangular baguettes). There are essentially three modern cutting styles for diamonds: brilliant, meaning the facets are triangular and kite shape, step cut, where the facets are rectangular shape and parallel to the table facet, and mixed cut, a combination of brilliant and step. Also, I believe that yesterday Queen Camilla wore for the first time in public the Queen Elizabeth II Burmese Ruby Tiara. Earlier in the day she was also seen wearing the Williamson Brooch which contains at its center one of the world's largest and finest pink diamonds, weighing nearly 24 metric carats and cut as a round brilliant. Another great video, Allan.

    I wonder why some order sashes/ribbons run from the right shoulder to left hip (eg. RVO) and others from the left shoulder to right hip (eg. Garter)? It was one of the differences between the King's order, where he is wearing the RVO, and his grandfather's order, who is wearing the Garter.

      The King is wearing the collar of the order of the Garter. Meaning he can't wear the sash at the same time, so the RVO was the next best thing. Although I would have thought that the order of the Thistle was higher ranking and the sash should have been worn instead of the RVO. But I guess I'm wrong.

    A nice design; and I've always liked The King's Royal Cypher design (more than some other choices of His Majesty's).
    It's without question that the Princess of Wales will receive one, and it's almost as certain that the Princess Royal and the Duchess of Edinburgh will as well. On the other hand, it seems unlikely that the Duchess of Sussex will be getting one in the foreseeable future, if ever.
    In any case, the miniature portraits themselves are hand-painted and thus each are slightly unique; as this is a laborious process it will be some time before those presently deserving of the Order will be able to receive it.

      I'm not saying that each of King Charles's Family Order badges would take several years to make, but it might be another year or even two before a lot of three or four are completed, assuming that the bottleneck is painting the miniature portrait, and depending on the priority Charles gives the project. The jewelry work is fairly simple and could be done in a matter of weeks.

    In other reports I have read the ribbon of the new Family Order a pale green - which it looks to me. Also, the George V and George VI Orders portray those respective Kings wearing the riband and collar of the Order of the Garter. Was there a specific reason The King chose the riband of the Royal Victorian Order instead ? Was it simply because the portrait was taken from a specific photograph where he was wearing the Royal Victorian Order ?

    Dear Dr Allan Barton, could you please clarify the function of wearing "aiguillettes." It was my understanding that the wearer is either an edecan or Aid de Camps to the monarch. Nevertheless, I understood that in some cases it is also to indicate military rank. Can this be the case in the uniform of King Charles III? Thank you.

    • @gustavtracchia1341
      @gustavtracchia1341 3 дні тому +2

      @@williamevans9426 I am inclined into believing the aiguillette King Charles III wears is indicative of his rank as Admiral of the Fleet. This is based by observing the other two family order, the one with the portrait of King George V and the one with the portrait of King George VI. Including the one for King Charles III, all three are almost identical. The three of kings are wearing the naval uniform of Admiral of the fleet, the blue sash of the Order of the Garter and finally we can partially see the gilded cords of the aiguillettes. What rest to learn is, if when these three monarchs were crown princes and ADC of the current monarch at that time, the aiguillettes differed - in some details - from the one used as ADC vs the ones indicating the highest naval rank.

      @@williamevans9426 I must correct myself when I wrote "the three most recent male monarchs are wearing the blue sashes of the Order of the Gater." King Charles III is making an exception, since in his official portrait of 2023, he is wearing the sash of the Victorian Order instead and that portrait is the one used for the family order here discussed.

      Technically the Royal Estates overseas are managed by the Chancellor of the Exchequer who was given them by George III who knew what a waster his son the future George IV aka "Georgie Porgie pudding n pie, who kissed the girls and made them cry". So his dad stopped him gambling away the family wealth and told the Chancellor to pay them a stipend from those properties, but keep the rest for the country, they would continue to manage the Dutchies of Lancaster and Cornwall directly as well as a few others. So technically probably a few to 5 Billion with the art and jewels thrown in, but a lot of the art is priceless as they are by old masters, so you would find that hard to value.
