Disclaimer: I worked on this film for almost 4 years. That being said, John Lasseter personally told me it was o e if the best animated movies he had ever seen. Despite being nominated for an Oscar it’s lack of performance was that this was perceived as the 3rd “Penguin Movie” (March of the Penguins and Happy Feet) but for those of us who worked on it you can feel every ounce of passion in every frame. Not to mention the groundbreaking technology that was created for the waves and the “documentary” camera.
interesting to read i know the two other movies u mentioned but i would never say that they are similiar to each other... surfs up is def underrated af
First I wanna say your a legend, secondly this movie deserves so much more. Just because it’s a penguin movie doesn’t mean it’s the same thing, it all depends on how it’s made. March of the penguins was a documentary of emperor penguins and happy feet was an animated film about emperor penguins who dance. Surfs up is probably one of the most unique and just beautifully animated movies and probably the only animated movie to use the type of effect where it feels like a documentary using that type of technology. And I am shocked that they don’t use that method anymore. Surfs up just feels so natural from the voice acting, the jokes, the story. It’s a beautifully animated film and it deserves much more praise. And they just had to take well made franchise and butcher it with a cheaply animated wwe sequel. But either way, this movie deserves a lot more recognition ^^
As one of the executives who worked on this movie for four years. I can confirm to you how much love and passion did go into this. Unfortunately we got labeled as the "Third Penguin Move" after "March of the Penguins" and "Happy Feet"
I feel that what made this movie really great was that the dialogue that was actually meaningful felt real. It didn't feel as forced. It felt like 2 people (penguins) talking. Like when Cody says he was a jerk and he slightly cuts off Lani to say he was. That's how a real conversation goes. You get caught up in feels and become slightly abrasive. I know it's just a movie about penguins surfing, but I really liked that part of it
I do believe that’s because they went off improv when making a lot their lines. That’s why there’s a lot of usage of uh throughout the film. Gives it a next level sense of realism. Not to mention the camerawork really well replicated that of a documentary, as if someone was actually behind it.
"Cody's this, Cody's that, Cody's me.." That part has stuck with me for so long and I've never related to anything more. This was the first movie I ever saw in theatres. I'm about to graduate high school now and that quote is the most relatable thing. Everyone has a say in what I do after school and I'm spread thin bc all my family says something different, and the one time I say what I want to do, they all look at me like I'm stupid.
I wholeheartedly agree and I also think that quote Is very relatable In the most realistic sense, especially me at this stage In my late teens wanting to graduate and get Into college, even willing to do work during the summer to gain enough credit just to graduate Into college Is one thing. But what I want to achieve after Is another different aspect entirely and I don't fully know yet (still evaluating my options), but one thing I DO KNOW and understand Is that (If Surfs Up as a movie Is anything to go by) It doesn't matter what anybody else thinks, It matters what I want. And that's all I anybody ever needs to hear, and that's what we born here to do, we're worthy of existing because we're worthy of existing. And there's no other complex reason for It.
I was 19, summer after sophomore year. I woke up to the sound of my sister and her bf talking shit saying I’m a bum who wastes resources (food) and who got nothing going for him. My sister was/is my biggest hero since I was a kid. Hurt hearing that.
The writing and voice acting in this is unmatched. Almost every conversation seems natural and unscripted, from the certain emphasis on worlds too how they talk over each other. Will definitely go down as one of the overall best put together animated films of our time
A lot of that feeling came from a system we invented to allow the directors to see the animated characters through a digital Camera and the "film" then documentary style.
For everything that Shia has gone through, he has never the less given us unforgettable characters in movies that are so influential. For many of us 96-99ers, Shia was almost in every important movie of the 2000s, and he gave one of his best performances here, in an animated movie about penguins surfing.
This movie is actually what inspired me to start surfing and yeah, some people may think thats stupid, but they don't know the main concept of the story. It's about having fun, about enjoying the waves and sun, being with people you enjoy. I know I'm not the best surfer, I've only ever surfed an 8 foot wave twice, and failed way more times than that, but I love to be out there. Thats all that matters to me.
Hey, I picked up archery and blacksmithing because I'm a nerd who thinks medieval weapons are cool. Doesnt matter what gets you into a hobby, if it helped you find something you love, thats a win!

This movie is legendary. I watched it when I was 9, a few years after it's release, and only re watched it recently. The voice acting if fabulous, and the inuendos are spot on.
Yeah the voice acting just feels genuine and real. Adds a charm I haven’t really seen in any other animated movie, and the style of having it a mix of movie and documentary just made it that much more unique
This movie is top 3 animated movies ever made. Just the WAY these characters actually seem like they are communicating with eachother instead of noticing the voice actors lines being out of sink. The PLOT behind the movie of a nobody who wants to be somebody but finding something way more! The actual voice actors themselves between Bridges and LeBouf! And twist of that being big Z ! It’s just such an amazing movie and it’s so underappreciated!
I remember watching this movie as a kid and being completely blown away in every single consecutive aspect. I went home and immediately tried to sculpt that hidden beach area in Zoo Tycoon 2.

I love Shia, man. He has a lot of controversy behind him but I really do think he's a good guy who just suffered the same as most child actors do. But he has some fantastic acting skills and really knows how to express heavy emotion and convey well to an audience. That's one brilliant thing about having trauma and tragedy in your life is that he can channel that into his acting and express himself that make it so believable.
I forgot how good this movie was, I have a lot of fond memories of watching it with my dad as a kid and never really understanding all of it. Now I have to rewatch it again.

I liked it a lot as a kid, maybe I should rewatch it
Surfs up is a goat movie … Cody + chicken joe… goat ass surfers bro … goat ass movie characters 😭😂
Great video, well done on this! :)
Thankyou so much!
These water physics look better than Moana despite being made a decade prior.
Shia LaBeouf voicing Cody is the best.
"I've never you know won anything in my whole life, you know just once I want to feel like a winner." Damn.
Cody's me bro.......
FELT THIS
1:34 oh man that hits hard. 😖
Such a good movie, definitely a childhood favorite of mine
I love Shia, man. He has a lot of controversy behind him but I really do think he's a good guy who just suffered the same as most child actors do. But he has some fantastic acting skills and really knows how to express heavy emotion and convey well to an audience. That's one brilliant thing about having trauma and tragedy in your life is that he can channel that into his acting and express himself that make it so believable.
As a kid This and treasure planet were some of my favorites
got me cryin on the treadmil at the gym
I forgot how good this movie was, I have a lot of fond memories of watching it with my dad as a kid and never really understanding all of it. Now I have to rewatch it again.
Find a way is the great way to live.
Mm-hmm... Agreed
Such an underrated movie and such a cool original idea this movie and an absolute hidden gem.
Man I remember when I was a kid and this first came out. Such a classic Gem.
Surf’s up and brother bear are two movies I can watch multiple times a year. I might watch 8 movies a year and these could be 3 of them.
