All the players you listed have one thing in common, they play for storms.. Hugh's was average coming through QLD, paps was nothing special at tigers.. it's not really about the player, it's the club "Melbourne storms"

Yep. Was horrified when my son came home from school with a Auskick pack. He left footy for AFL the next season. The way they run the juniors is very impressive, they take no rubbish either carry on like a goose and you are facing a life ban.

The way the NRL are introducing teams such as the Dolphins at the moment looks like it will be another 25 years before we see the "National" game expand to include teams like Perth and/or Adelaide. They can barely manage the current roster of teams who can barely win a game at the NRL level , so the draft idea could be a interesting change.
I can’t figure out how they claim they wanna grow the game and then put a team in a rugby league heartland, that’s not growing the pie that’s dividing the current pie in smaller slices. Why not put teams in hobart, Perth and Darwin and I’m sick and tired of hearing that places like Darwin are to small when Cronulla is in the comp. Besides there’s no pro teams of any football code in Darwin or Hobart so that by default grows the game by being the only game in town.

The reds were actually quite a popular team and so was the rams. They were folded for political not financial reasons.

A second Brisbane team is a sensible move, and an 18th team now has to happen because 17 teams makes no sense at all. The schedule is going to be ridiculous, with a bye every single week. The second expansion team should go somewhere like you've suggested. I think Perth would be the best option. There's plenty of expat QLD and NSW people living over there with mining gigs, and WA locals enjoy sport and will get behind a team.

They need a relegation system for the foundation clubs, drop the number of teams to 12 and make it a truly national competition. New Teams in Perth, Adelaide, Darwin along with Melbourne, 4 Qld teams 4 NSW teams. Top 6 play finals.
Simple way to help would be to allow them for the first 2 years to be able to take 1 under contract player from each team in the league provided the player they want is open to the move. They should also be allowed to loan 1 under contract player from each club if both parties are happy. This give them a full roster for year and year 2.

The teams that come last get first picks, in the hope they slowly gain enough “good” players and get better. Whereas the top teams get the tail end picks. NFL, NBA, MLB, AFL all use the drafting process. It’s exciting for the fans too, if you’re team is terrible throughout the year, you at least have the chance of picking up one of the best young prospects in the offseason.

It's not just Expansion that's a mess, but the Game itself needs an overhaul. Every week you know which teams will win 90% of the time, with just the odd upset. The bottom 8 does not compete with the top eight every year. The bottom 4 of the top 8 does not compete with the Top 4. Basically NRL has become a yawn fest for the Ladder, despite some highly athletic and entertaining football. The Salary Cap doesn't work well enough across all Clubs, as each game, each week should not be a known outcome beforehand.
I think adding another team is quite stupid they should have planned to add 2 teams to the comp within a few years time, because adding another team to a 16 team comp means 1 team every week for every round gets a bye which is a free 2 points and because there's 24 rounds in a season that means that 7 out of the now 17 teams will get a free 4 points without having to play while the following 10 will only have the freebie of 2 points.
As a paid up member of another club, why would I want to see a competitor get a financial advantage? I'd literally be paying membership fees to a club that the NRL has deliberately made second tier. The Dolphins are responsible for their own recruiting and they knew the financial regime when they bid for entry to the NRL.

Would it be a better idea to move existing clubs to new places? It would be painful no doubt but could it work? I imagine moving the Wests Tigers elsewhere, maybe Perth, and they share home games between Perth and Campbelltown.
I don't think giving the Tigers a 15th home ground is the answer. Moving a Western Sydney team is the wrong move completely given the junior talent pool out there. Relocation could work but tough decisions would have to be made which is not something the NRL excel at and they care so much about "history" more so than the future.

NRL Needs to introduce a draft to the competition so that weaker teams can get to pick a future franchise player, also if they are going to expand at least make each team protect 10 players on their rosters while the rest of the roster is up for grabs with new clubs expanding

A word of warning to the NRL. Do not add any more teams to the competition. Australia isn't big enough to support expansion of competitions in this country. The AFL experiment has shown that with 18 teams the player talent is too thinly spread. The more teams you have the less quality players you'll have in state leagues. The supporters won't benefit from new teams, the only people that will benefit are large corporations sponsoring these teams. The NRL is just fine the way it is.

@@RugbyLeagueHistory Perth was a decent team, it was the super league war that did them in. Perth is far richer and more populated now since then so there’ll be a decent supporter base. And eastern state expats in wa would finally be able to watch a nrl game.

The teams that come last get first picks, in the hope they slowly gain enough “good” players and get better. Whereas the top teams get the tail end picks. NFL, NBA, MLB, AFL all use the drafting process. It’s exciting for the fans too, if you’re team is terrible throughout the year, you at least have the chance of picking up one of the best young prospects in the offseason.

Trying to expand during a pandemic/economic pressure is stupidity.
It's not just Expansion that's a mess, but the Game itself needs an overhaul. Every week you know which teams will win 90% of the time, with just the odd upset. The bottom 8 does not compete with the top eight every year. The bottom 4 of the top 8 does not compete with the Top 4. Basically NRL has become a yawn fest for the Ladder, despite some highly athletic and entertaining football. The Salary Cap doesn't work well enough across all Clubs, as each game, each week should not be a known outcome beforehand.

I think adding another team is quite stupid they should have planned to add 2 teams to the comp within a few years time, because adding another team to a 16 team comp means 1 team every week for every round gets a bye which is a free 2 points and because there's 24 rounds in a season that means that 7 out of the now 17 teams will get a free 4 points without having to play while the following 10 will only have the freebie of 2 points.
The Dolphins have the QLD Cup to draw players from, they will have to bring in a home grown halves pairing.

As a paid up member of another club, why would I want to see a competitor get a financial advantage? I'd literally be paying membership fees to a club that the NRL has deliberately made second tier.
The Dolphins are responsible for their own recruiting and they knew the financial regime when they bid for entry to the NRL.

Would it be a better idea to move existing clubs to new places? It would be painful no doubt but could it work? I imagine moving the Wests Tigers elsewhere, maybe Perth, and they share home games between Perth and Campbelltown.
I don't think giving the Tigers a 15th home ground is the answer. Moving a Western Sydney team is the wrong move completely given the junior talent pool out there. Relocation could work but tough decisions would have to be made which is not something the NRL excel at and they care so much about "history" more so than the future.

I also thought about the Titans. I can't see either club become consistent league heavyweight clubs. I would say Titans probably have it worse because thr Gold Coast clubs have always struggled. Tigers at least have Balmain history to lean on.

Dolphins now look far more settled with their roster than Gould's Bulldogs maybe not better on paper but certainly more stable. Worry about us Gus.
NRL Needs to introduce a draft to the competition so that weaker teams can get to pick a future franchise player, also if they are going to expand at least make each team protect 10 players on their rosters while the rest of the roster is up for grabs with new clubs expanding

Australia isn't big enough to support expansion of competitions in this country.
The AFL experiment has shown that with 18 teams the player talent is too thinly spread.
The more teams you have the less quality players you'll have in state leagues.
The supporters won't benefit from new teams, the only people that will benefit are large corporations sponsoring these teams.
The NRL is just fine the way it is.
