Labyrinth of Zeux - ADG Episode 270

- What do you get when you find the middle-ground between ZZT and MegaZeux? Why, a platformer of course! :D
Today's Ancient DOS Game was meant to be Gunmetal, but due to technical issues I had to instead go with something else at the last minute and decided on Labyrinth of Zeux, a text-mode platformer made by Software Visions in 1993 that was the precursor to and served as the foundation to the MegaZeux game creation system.
It's actually pretty crazy how very closely this game resembles a typical MegaZeux platformer, both in the way it looks and feels, despite coming out before MegaZeux, but beyond the similarities, it's VERY difficult. :P

Additional Information and Corrections:
* You can find Labyrinth of Zeux available for download here: www.digitalmzx...
* If you're interested in the port of this game to MegaZeux, check out this link instead: www.digitalmzx...
* Something I didn't pick up on until much later, surprisingly, is that the internal speed setting is not saved and needs to be readjusted each time you load the program... which means some of my footage was captured at Speed 4 with 30,000 DOSBox cycles, meaning it's going quite a bit faster than I would've preferred, but somehow didn't really notice was happening...? :o

A review of this game's MZX remake says that the title music is from "Spider-Man and Capt. America in Dr. Doom's Revenge".
Some of the music maybe, but given the wild variance in timestamps I'm going to guess the music in the game as a whole comes from multiple sources or a collection that was built from multiple sources. :B
ua-cam.com/video/RtaiB5n2qTI/v-deo.html this video is the C64 version, but I knew I heard the title theme from somewhere
@@Pixelmusement Most of the Adlib music I can hear in the background of the game, I recognize from AdLib .ROLs (from AdLib themselves, as well as other sources). So most, if not all, of the music in this game was ripped from other sources. The music at 2:00 for example is one of the tunes on the Adlib Jukebox disk.
Love these text-based games, something special about them... Was surprised by finding ZZT videos on Twitch being made from time to time
This version of Gunmetal looks a lot different than I remember...
The music in the beginning (or something like it) also pops up in Nyet III, that Tetris clone Ross Scott looked at a long time ago.
Yeah, this music seems to come from a midi music collection. The music in level 24 (11:30) is from the intro of Ozzy Osbourne's "Mr Crowley". Presumably the rest of the music is lifted from 80s popular music and classical music as well.
Fun fact: Megazeux is just an enhanced version of ZZT, a free game engine given to us by Tim Sweeney, designer of the Unreal engine. The same guy who made Unreal also made what has now evolved into Megazeux.
That's an impressive custom VGA font. In fact it's probably modifying character bitmaps on the fly for animation.
Almost certainly, though not for anything with "on-demand" animations, like when the bomblaying or wall-making enemies do their thing.
@@Pixelmusement You can make sprites much larger using more character bitmaps, it just also requires more coding and coordination.
Very nice aesthetic. And I have a feeling the dev was into Future Classics' DiskMan. This is a game I've somehow never heard of and would've loved at the time. Not that I won't give it a spin now too.
Would be keen to see more like this and ZZT, etc.
That's too bad about the game being broken partially into the process. Thank you for all your extra work!

GOLD: So if I fall on you, I make you just as dead
7:43 I know that song, It's Elecrock, which is an old ROL song I remember ever since I was a kid.
I'd actually recommend playing the Megazeux remake of Labyrinth of Zeux over the original DOS release. (It's the only game I can say that about, because apart from a few ZZT games that people remade in Megazeux, it's the only game to ever have a remake on Megazeux that preserves all the features of the original game.)
The remake makes changes that make several aspects of the game less annoying (the missile launchers flash before they shoot a missile instead of having no warning, and there's an option you can enable that prevents you pushing an object if you would just be crushed by another object above it.) Instead of just generic tracks from a stock music collection, the remake has unique music tracks for all 50 levels (and they're all great tracks, reminiscent of the best module music from the demoscene, but with much higher-quality instrument samples,) and it even comes with a set of 20 additional levels made by the person who made the remake.
I had this game in the past, version 1.x (don't remember exact one), but it was terribly buggy, with very lax collision detection that worked when it wanted to (one time you could go through a solid wall, while another you'd get stuck inside it, at the same place, in the same level) so searching for and archiving older versions of the game is probably not worth it. From what I rememver and can see in the video, there are no major differences in level layouts either.
Great review as always.
Not as memorable as its older brother, but still a decent time. It's always fun seeing games push their limitations as much as possible.
This looks kinda fun!
OOoooohhhhh a Zeux :D You're not doing it justice calling it "simple". :)
Pixelmusement what happened to today's ancient dos game which was meant to be gunmetal that made you have to choose labyrinth of zeux instead
A LOT of things. The installer had issues, once manually installed it had a lot of configurations and stuff required to get it running right, and then when I started to make progress I found it was DELETING my save games when I quit and the second level also pit me up against a MASSIVE amount of tough enemies, far more than anyone could be expected to survive that early in the game, making me think i triggered some kind of weird copy protection. I tried to find solutions, but I was already way down on my available work hours with nothing to show for it so I had to abandon the attempt. I think I could've got it working right if I had a LOT more time so I might take another stab at it in the future. :B
This wouldn't be out of place on the Spectrum.
This game reminds me of _Montezuma's Revenge,_ but is otherwise completely different.
I recall Celica talking about this game a while back.
She said something about the version her mother had being a very early version, though didn't elaborate further. I haven't heard from any of my dev team for some time, so...
Oh, and I imagine the filler is going to be about recent events? Or, about the Wii and Xbox360 combined design that is the PS5? lolz
Zooks? you mean /Zeu/s? The 'x' is typically an 's' sound in names like that. :p
I don't think there's a generally accepted pronunciation of the "Zeux" part of the name, at least, I've never seen or found one. :P
@@Pixelmusement From a lifelong ZZT'er and MZX'er back on AustNet, I always just figured it was enunciated the way you did Greek mythology names. :p
@@Pixelmusement My IRC nick (ZZco) is forever immortalized in places as "that annoying kid who keeps trying to add me as a friend", lmao
Why not spell it Zeus then?
In viewing a list of words ending in 'x', there doesn't appear to be a standard pronunciation (not that English doesn't regularly break the rules). I've seen some words end with a 'k' sound, while others the 'x' is silent. As far as words that end with an 'x', I don't think I've come across one that ends in an 's' sound, but I'm probably wrong. Let's not get started with names that begin with an 'x'.
100 likes in 7 hours.
Slightly higher rate of likes vs views than usual, but not by a huge amount. :B
Pixelmusement Are we a little modest here? Checking fresh vids from LGR and Angry Joe, they seem to caps at +5% of likes. Getting 10%, and over, suggests you have to have a loyal fan base, and the content of the channel is very pleasing :)
Yeah, typical rate for my vids is around 10%ish, give or take a couple points. Comparatively, my sub counts are low, but then I have some of the most amazing fans I could ever ask for! ^_^
