I almost prefer the ambiguity of this to the same author's 'Rebecca'; there is a very good and quite recent film adaptation of My Cousin Rachel which starred Rachel Weisz and was perhaps a little bit more sympathetic to the titular character. Certainly, I myself got to the end thinking that I knew the truth, which I definitely hadn't with this radio version - but the film does add some new ambiguity in respect of another character which winds things a little tighter.
My Cousin Rachel is a 1952 American romantic mystery film directed by Henry Koster and starring Olivia de Havilland, Richard Burton, Audrey Dalton, Ronald Squire, George Dolenz and John Sutton. The film is based on the 1951 novel of the same name by Daphne du Maurier.
There are many adaptations yet this was gorgeously done . Dear Majestical Magpie, I just wanted to put in a request for any Raymond Chandler stories if possible at sometime in the future. I have to apologize if you’ve already posted any, if you have I’m sure I’ll find them. Thank you for everything you do, you’re the best. My lonely life is much less lonely because of your library.
So, I've no Chandler on the channel yet - BUT. BBC radio adapted all of the Marlowe novels twice and somewhere I do have both sequences. There's also a really great radio adaptation of The Maltese Falcon, too. It'll be a while before I can get to these though, so in the meantime : 1) I do have adaptations of several noir-style stories on the channel (The Postman Always Rings Twice, Strangers on a Train, and a really great Double Indemnity) and 2) this channel has a nice playlist of Chandler/Marlowe radio plays. It does mix the two cycles, so the first three are the 1970s versions with Ed Bishop whose voice I prefer, and the remainder are from the 2010s - both are good though. Until I can get anything like this on my channel, you might enjoy hearing them here: ua-cam.com/play/PLPhVD5ny8GMIBpdGzhNtS6gs70rh9l_yC.html
(It seems I do have The Maltese Falcon to hand though so I'll try and put that on my channel in the very near future - not quite Chandler, I know, but near as Hammett (sorry))
Synopsis: Young Philip Ashley was raised by his older cousin Ambrose to be his heir. They are extremely close, until Ambrose goes to Florence and meets and marries a woman named Rachel. In a short time, Ambrose is dead, and Philip receives a letter from his uncle of his suspicion that Rachel is poisoning him.
What an excellent production! Thr story & the actors were absolutely brilliant! This was not a tale I had heard before. Thank You!

Recommend watch the film adaptation with Richard Burton
