  • Walking is the most foundational and functional movement pattern we perform every day. How a client walks can reveal much about mobility, stability and strength.
Join podiatrist Dr. Emily as she explores how the gait assessment can be the most informative client assessment. We’ll discuss the phases of gait and basic joint positions during each of those phases, walking demands and techniques to increase foot and pelvic strength for improved gait.

WOW THIS IS FANTASTIC , such valuable info, that's how African elite runners are so fast, despite being so lean , cause they know how to use the elastic energy of their feet, tendons and so on...do you have any specific video lesson on running? it would be great

I teach Qigong which I believe has a relationship with this fabulous content through the fascial lines of the body.
This education of the gait enables me to move incredibly fast on the squash court.

Dr Emily. What shoes do you recommend for people with bunion? Xero or Hoka ? I am using toe correctors and arch support and have moderate bunion.

I am confused about heel strike vs mid or forefoot strike. Heel strike makes sense in shoes due to the extra support from the shoe material, even with minimal shoes or moccasins. However, when I hike barefoot, I find that I more naturally forefoot or midfoot strike. Heel strike barefoot is not comfortable, does not feel natural, it actually hurts the heel, my knee & leg is more rigid. Mid and forefoot strike, my feet are better able absorb any variances in the ground as my metatarsals & phalanges are more malleable than then heel. Also, with that type of strike, my knee is more bent, my posture is more upright or slightly forward leaning, my center of gravity or weight is shifted forward, and I find that my whole leg is engaged in absorbing impact forces better all the way up to my glutes. Along this line of thought, when hiking barefoot, I find that I relax my glutes when I'm about to impact the surface. When my glute relaxes, my foot relaxes and is even more malleable to variations in the ground including rocks, terrain, roots, etc. The book, "The Barefoot Hiker" was very helpful for me with learning about this before I started hiking barefoot. Dr. Cucuzzella talks about your topic, but solely for barefoot running in his video, "The Principles of Natural Running with Dr. Mark Cucuzzella". Watching his video of him actually running barefoot also supports this as he strikes midfoot on the outside 4 metatarsals and then the foot rolls to the first metatarsal for the push-off. The video also discusses similarly your loading of energy and the release of energy during pushoff. Thank you for presenting this as gait has been an area I'm deeply trying to understand as I have transitioned from regular shoes to barefoot shoes and hope to help others do the same. My goal is to incorporate barefoot strengthening, kinetic chain, movement into my Personal Training. Love all your material and detail information you provide Dr. Emily. I'm looking forward to BTS 1 & 2 training.

As a fellow barefooter, I agree with you. Anyone who walks around barefoot on hard surfaces will get instant feedback from the neurosensory receptors in our feet that landing on the heel is a terrible way to walk or run. If we just listen to the nerves on our feet, our gait will drastically change for the better and quickly move away from what is considered "normal" in our shod society.
