T/Sgt Bill Parker , a Wire Cutter of Company E 116th IR, 29th ID landed at H-Hour nearby and described lying prone just 30' in front of this bunker and not being able to take it out, having only grenades and his M1. He described that mid morning the US Navy firing at WN65, the shells passing just 10' over his head and striking the pillbox. He lost most of his hearing that day due to the naval shelling. He is still with us as of today and is 98 years old. When he landed at Omaha, he ran across the beach, being the first one from his landing craft to jump off. Machine gun bullets hitting the sand 3 feet in front of him. The bullets were coming from this pillbox. After the pillbox was taken out, the next day (D+1) he came back down to the beach at first light to get more ammunition. He entered the pillbox to see the dead German slumped over the MG42 that was shooting at him. He told him "you are through and you didn't get me". That is a bad ass. You can listen to his story on the Warrior Next Door Podcast.
I was there in 2017. Breathtaking moment. All those who fought for their country. May they rest in peace
