Probably the two most meaningfull words of the portuguese culture are Mar (Sea) and Saudade (Homeseek and Logging) because of our History of Discovers of new lands and new countries. But remember that a trip by boat to India for instance in the 16, 17 century to go and comeback would have taken 3 years. So Saudade is the total absence of your love ones. For the portuguese it's a very strong feeling. When someone tells you that they have been Saudades from you because you are way, those portuguese like you a lot or have a strong bond with you.

It was taught to us Portuguese people since young age that a lot of people died several centuries ago, specially young people and kids, across Europe of course, not only in Portugal, because wars, hunger, illnesses, people had to deal with constant loss and pain... But when you bury the body you keep the memory alive like the graves where the bodies rest... But when the constant traveling across the sea of portuguese sailors, fathers and sons for months and years, that takes the certainty of where our loved ones are or if they are alive or dead... Not knowing the day those sailors and soldiers would come back to their families, if there was a come back, it took away that certainty from a lot of mothers and wives, grand parents, friends, children, including the memory, the finality and at the end their meaning of life... And that anguish and dispair that could crumble an entire people in pain until extinction, in the case of Portuguese people it changed into a bearable feeling... The sweet and addicted feeling of hope dressed in an eternal sadness Saudade... And that turned out as a portuguese people identity and cultural expression, specially in the case of Fado music. Of course nowadays the term Saudade lost that primal meaning because times changed... But portuguese people did refuse to let the word die, even though it changed into something more trivial, it kept the deepness, because like I said it turned out as a people cultural identity.

Saudade is a something you feel, as strong as "love" or "happiness", so it's definitely a feeling, or/and a state of mind. When someone passed away (wich is the case for this song) and you have that nostalgic thoughts about how much you care and you're gonna miss that person, u're experiencing to have "Saudade". When you go away from your contry and you're missing the good things you need to feel complete back in your home country, you're experiencing "Saudade". Normally it's used when it's gonna took a while to see or have the thing you miss back, or even when u're never will have it/he/she again.
That's my best explanation to this magical and unique feeling that is "Saudade". Sorry if it is confusing. :)

Saudade is the feeling of missing something/someone. It can be used in the context of not seeing someone for a long time, or when you say you miss the old times (kinda connected to nostalgia in this point), or even when you lose someone (that is what the song is about).
So, in Portuguese, instead of "I miss you" we say "Eu tenho 𝘀𝗮𝘂𝗱𝗮𝗱𝗲𝘀 tuas"(I have saudades of you).
