This is what it looked like when My jacked up 1970 Dodge Coronet 500 was rear-ended by a 1979 Buick Regal. I was minding my own business at a Red light late at night, when out of nowhere some guy from NYC plowed into my car at about 50 mph!! Seatbelts were for babies back then! I wasn't hurt at all, I Had 50s on the back of the car so I needed to lift the rear a little with air shocks so they would clear the fenders. My back bumper was in perfect alignment with the Buicks grill! When I got out to see what happened I saw red at first because the first thing I saw was his hood peeled back to his windshield his motor was standing almost vertical, his grill, headlights and radiator were destroyed!!!! So my reaction was that he destroyed the car I was building for racing. 😢😢 when I made it to the back of my car the bumper was ok? Just a little dent, heavy chrome back then 😊He broke one exhaust hanger and put a small hole in my gas tank? The police didn't believe I took the entire impact! But I had witnesses that were sitting on their porch who saw everything. Mopar knew how to build a car back then especially since it was a Unibody (split frame) yes in the 70s they had Unibody cars. Anyway I drove home after plugging the little gas leak. His car was destroyed he was drunk and probably felt it in the morning. DUI wasn't a thing back then. He did have the nerve to say I backed into him lol .
When I was a kid I was riding with my grand parents when we got rear-ended, my grandparents had a 1979 Chrysler Newport and we got rear-ended at about 30mph by a brand new at the time 1999 Mercedes SLK, little SLK was totaled, and when the insurance adjuster first looked at the Chrysler he had a hard time finding the damage, after closer inspection the rear bumper was just bend a few inches in, no dents, hardly even a scuff on the bumper just slightly bent the whole mount.
I’m shocked the passenger cell of the Neon held up as well as it did. For a 30yo, very cheap econobox, I’d have expected a lot more cabin intrusion, given it was up against a 3-ton, full-frame Expedition.

And the bigger guy always wins. Put that Navigator up against a semi. See what happens.

Economic tradeoffs Lol. Reinforced beams ? Have you ever taken the door panel off of a lightweight car like a Neon or even a Camry? Not much there. Watch some collision aftermath videos, where the cars they make today disintegrate on impact even when they hit another lightweight pos. Crumple zones..yeah it was engineered to do that.
