Great song choice for that solemn occasion! This song can be about more than crossing a physical border. It could also be about going to “the other side.” Just curious, did you play this version or the album version? I think this version is even better. “For what are we, without hope in our hearts, that we’ll drink from God’s blessed waters, and eat the fruit of the vine.”
The thing that makes Bruce the very best writer of song lyrics-ever-is his deep understanding of the struggles of being a human being-This and this alone sets him apart from all the rest.Another poetic song by Bruce- The Very Best.Beautiful.
The magic of Bruce and Danny bringing the message of hope for the rewards that we hope to receive when we pass across the boarder of this life accompanied with a little of their musical beauty
I am continually surprised at the depth and breadth of Bruce Springsteen's genius. An unknown song on an obscure album and it's so beautiful you can't help but have hope in your heart in a world in which such beauty exists. For what are we Without hope in our hearts
Incredible example of how the human voice can become a beautiful musical instrument releasing powerful sentiment. Thank you so much, Bruce, and fniazi1 for posting.
Such a beautiful version of a strong yet tender song. I almost cried watching Danny. A haunting, daunting and heartfelt song. One of Bruces Great ones!
Love this song. danny backing him up with beautiful accordion. This is the very best of bruce. He sang this song at Danny's funeral. I was lucky enough to be there.
I agree that The Ghost of Tom Joad is his best work. It is exceptional, and this in.comparison to a lifetime of incredible work. I love this man. And this album makes me want to be a better person. My favourite work of all artists. This is about the most beautiful song I've ever heard. Did I mention I love this man?
One of the prettiest songs he's ever done. A real favorite of mine. On the Tom Joad tour, he did a gorgeous falsetto hum at the end that just gave you chills. When I saw him on the Devils & Dust tour in Norfolk, Va., he had Bruce Hornsby come out and play a subtle piano accompaniment, and it was one of the greatest things I've ever seen on a concert stage.
i just read this comment about the falsetto. i saw him in boston on that tour and he did the same thing. I was mezmorized and just sat there lost in the moment and just faded away. good stuff
Rest in peace Danny sorry you have to go so early we'll meet in a dream of this hard land Thnxx for your music in the band for so many years Condoleances for the leaving members of the band and the family Federici
I have been following The Boss since he first began touring. I have seen him in rooms with a hundred people..if that. There were many tunes he did with Danny on the accordion. It is one of my favorite configurations. I would have loved to have heard what Bruce said just after the video cut. It was good to see Danny smile. I miss him a lot.
I don't; if someone doesn't like him, then they're not missing out; Bruce's music wasn't meant for them. Also no one is a better person simply from liking him than one who doesn't like him, and vice-versa. Don't think otherwise; it's patronizing.
I don't understand that the so-called Reps here don't understand that Bruce is - like Ronald Reagan once said - "a true patriot". Just listen to the Born in the USA album.
A great song from that great 1995 album "The Ghost of Tom Joad". Very emotional, very very Bruce.I think "across the border" really means the end of life, and what's on the other side - pastures of gold and green. It is a religious song, almost a gospel.
Yikes I hope not but you mat be right,Bruce has some strange religious ideas. It resonates to me as a song for all the refugees in the world, especially relevant in these days with Trump's disgraceful border wall.
Quasi una preghiera! Che bello vedere Danny che suona la fisarmonica! Grazie Bruce! ❤️❤️❤️💞💞💖💎💫🤩😍🌺♥️questa canzone e molto tenera! 💫💞un ricordo a Danny! ❤️💫😇resterai sempre nei nostri cuori! 💫
I love this song. The first version I heard was a cover by Linda Ronstadt and Emmy Lou Harris. I have a new appreciation for Bruce after having heard both versions!
fitting to watch this today. RIP danny.. loved being able to watch you on that stage with bruce for these past 38 years. you were there first and always with him. it's going be weird to know we'll never look up to see you behind that organ and accordion again. one of the bloodbrothers is gone.
This is a fantastic bookend for Woody Guthrie's "Deportee's". Thank you Bruce for completing the circle. "Matamoros Banks" was just the icing on the cake of goodwill towards the new "oakies". Again,Thanks!!
I have scene him 3 times in my life (17 years) My favorite being my first Bruce concert; Nov. 11th 2005 in Norfolk VA. on his D&D tour. The last time i saw him was ironically November 11th 2007 in DC. He is easily my favorite musician. There is very little good music out there and im glad i found Bruce.
Looking forward to meeting on the other side of this filthy world in a new heaven and new earth. Sweet blossoms filling the earth drinking God's blessed clear cool water and real fresh air. Eating fruit from the vine . Now brother that is Home!!! I love God and Jesus for preparing a place where all this pain and sorrow is gone and all the broken pieces of our lives become gone and a new unbroken life begins in the blink of an eye. God how I Love this song. What are we without Hope in our Hearts?
Played this at my Dad’s funeral yesterday, he was a big fan of Bruce Springsteen as am I . We went to see him at his Born in the USA tour in the 80s .
Thinking of you

“For what are we, without hope in our hearts, that we’ll drink from God’s blessed waters, and eat the fruit of the vine.”
That little smile that Danny Federici gives at 2:03 is just priceless. RIP, Phantom.
RIP 😥💕🎶🌈💖
That's when his dealer walked in...

Agree
Don't forget Bob Dylan, a Nobel Prize Writer. Blowing in the Wind, Like a Rolling Stone, Mr. Tambourine Man and several hundred more.
Springsteen's music is medicine for a hard life
The magic of Bruce and Danny bringing the message of hope for the rewards that we hope to receive when we pass across the boarder of this life accompanied with a little of their musical beauty

Such a beautiful version of a strong yet tender song. I almost cried watching Danny. A haunting, daunting and heartfelt song. One of Bruces Great ones!
I wiped away tears, over and over.
Simply magnificent and so beautiful it actually hurts. God, what a voice.
Agree
Beautiful song. I want this played at my funeral. Thank you Bruce.
What a song... opens my heart everytime I hear it
Love this song. danny backing him up with beautiful accordion. This is the very best of bruce. He sang this song at Danny's funeral. I was lucky enough to be there.
Chillingly beautiful
C mon Danny
Who is Danny? (sorry for my ignorance)
Danny Federici keyboard player for the E street band before Charlie Giordano.
This is Bruce's most underrated song.
He has dozens...

Tyler Haney. Bruce Hornsby love that guy too
This song was one of the songs played on my wedding day. Very Special.

Danny, God bless and keep you, you gave so much pleasure and we will miss you
RIP Danny. I will always remember your beautiful music.
I wish we still could have Danny among us... may you rest 'neath auburn skies Danny.
Very nice tribute to a great musician.
One of his greatest ever songs
Rest in peace Danny
sorry you have to go so early
we'll meet in a dream of this hard land
Thnxx for your music in the band for so many years
Condoleances for the leaving members of the band and the family Federici
felt in love with this song 18years ago, can't find the words to say how much I love it
How cool is this Danny was so happy playing with Bruce and visa Versa. They made beautiful music together.🎼♥️🇦🇺💋🇺🇸

I feel bad for anyone who is not into Bruce.
agreed seen him twice in England

I agree the song is about end of life but not in a religious way .
@@englishgoordie More gospel-like.
@@nickkkyyy Agreed, let's hope the world will get rid of this despicable man DT on Nov 3rd.
@@nickkkyyy It does yes, coulda been written during the devastating Trump era.
The most beautiful song in the world ❤
La purezza, la bellezza di una grande canzone nella sua essenza...
One of the maestros greatest ever songs, beautifully done here with the late great Danny Federici making a lovely contribution.

How beautiful. This is a seriously under rated song. Sweet blossoms fill the air.
+michaelofsydney One of my all - time favorites.
Que bonita canción, siempre diré que en los momentos tristes estas melodias nos ayudan mucho.
Gracias.
yes, and in many cases it's not the hope of a better life for themselves but for their children.

Along with "Highway 29"; two amazing songs from Tom Joad!!!
" I'll dream of you my corazón "
The entire Tom Joad album is filled with songs about destitution, loneliness, forgotteness - very very emotional, one of Bruce's best albums!
Very good song
I love you Danny you was so great!
Wonderful song.
@SuzzyStohelit Love you hun! The song recommended by a friend got me a little choked up, your comment has me in tears! kisses Happy Christmas!
