These comments are the perfect combination of “Well obviously we knew that” and “Wow, I had no idea” 😂
I’m not actually presenting this as though it’s an unknown. I’ve mentioned a lot of times before that most of the sound is added. I’ve just never shown the process in any real detail before.
Thanks for putting so much effort into these videos Gav 👍🏻 I knew it was added, but the scale of the task never occurred to me
"Sounds" like a lot of hard work!
On the subject of replacing the background soundtrack to "disguise" the silence; don't. We love it. I also feel like lots of others have mimicked you (or vice versa) and by that, that sound has become the "de facto" slow mo sound. No slowmotion video is complete without it. Anyway, great video 👍
Now we appreciate your work even more now that I know how hard it is to sync the sound! :)
I love the background sound to the slow mo, it's what marks it as a Slow Mo Guys video
Haha I hear you all loud and clear on synthetic design 02. I’ll keep it around for at least another 10 years.
Yes please never get rid of it
This synthetic choir is the theme of the channel :D
Slow Mo Guys just wouldn't be the same withour it.
Possibly the most pleasant ambience in any video on youtube.
Keep doing what you're doing Gavvyboi.
Keep the hair for a bit gavin, it looks good
Never get rid of the synthetic choir, it’s THE sound of slowmo guys.
It's THE sound of slowmo.
I was waiting for him to say signature sound cause that's what it is.
it's such a classic classic sound
Yeah, he didn't seem to have realized that's become THE audio signature of his channel.
He's just using it because he hasn't come up with something else, and we all know it as THE SLO MO GUYS SOUND.
Yeah.
Now that he's revealed the name of it, I can't help but wonder how many other similar channels will start using it.
Synthetic Design 02, 50%, unpreserved pitch: the sound of Slow Mo Guys.
i could listen to that loop for hours on end. feels like i’m calm underwater with no worries.
Alternative title:
Gavin understates some of the most iconic sound design in youtube history.
"Oh yeah this old thing works I guess but I should probably replace it with something clever."
"Bruce, trust me, the batarang is *fine.* "
Hahaha
Seriously, the number of things that Gavin has just intuitively figured out and taught himself (including stellar sound design) is amazing. Truly an eye and ear for detail. I actually went to school for audio engineering, and there's a lot of stuff in this video that some people in my classes struggled to understand.
Now I want a supercut of just the slow mo scenes, but mainly to listen to them.
@@TheSlowMoGuys2 You have done a great job, and seen other comments prior of you inspiring them to study different subject.
The slow-mo shots really wouldn't be the same without the calming ambiance and nice sound effects, so we all appreciate your sacrifice.
Simon Rex Eagar 100%
I wonder what song they use
I know it would be very different without the sound
Totally agree
Agreed!!
Gav: "I just kinda made it up as I go."
... and has formed the standard for a lot of media how slow motion sounds. I noticed Mark Rober use the slowmo whoop and layering that Gav uses, and it makes me happy to see how these two blokes from the Island have had such an influence on changing how media is perceived.
Most shooting or gun related youtubers that use slow motion (Larry Vickers, Jerry Miculak, etc...) almost always use a lot of elements that Gavin likley pioneered. Like the slow down "whooomp" noise.
Smarter Everyday uses the same kind of sound design too. Which isn't surprising, Gav has borrowed Destin's camera a few times 😄
I mean... this is really nothing new. Sound design in slow motion scenes has been the standard for cinema and tv shows years before you tube was even a thing. What do you think they did in this scene:
ua-cam.com/video/8DajVKAkL50/v-deo.html
Gavin has also worked in the idustry for a while, including on a bunch of pretty big films.
I think Gav does an incredible job but he did not invent sound design 😭
I'll be quite honest, I don't know how I'd feel if Synthetic Design 02 were gone. It's so synonymous with the channel that it's basically the 3rd Slow Mo Guy
"I'm Gavin."
"And I'm Dan."
"*ooooooooooooooo*"
I agree.
Yeah, I don't think you can get rid of Synthetic Design 02. Even if you find a new one... SD02 HAS to be in there at least in one shot. It has become your sonic brand.
@@ElliWoelfin **wheeze**
@@ElliWoelfin LMAO
Please NEVER get rid of Synthetic Design 02.
At this point I can't imagine a Slow Mo Guys video without it, it's just so ingrained into the channel branding despite never being mentioned up until this point.
It's the perfect slowed down sound of silence...
I agree. What works, works. And does not matter how many years you use it.
It's become part of channel canon at this point. It'd be like a missing cast member.
Bartholomew Dan Really? Synthetic Design 02 has been mentioned by them before, in a Q&A video they did 9 years ago
@@Connie_TinuityError 9 years ago in a Q&A is basically as good as never.
9 hours just for the audio? Massive respect.
I think that’s just mainly because I’m not very good.
Well if it wansnt your 9/hours used sound we would be earraped
@@TheSlowMoGuys2 You are brilliant Gavlarrr
@@TheSlowMoGuys2 Where can i pay you? :D
@@TheSlowMoGuys2 Considering how much more you do this than the average person, I think you're higher on the scale than you give yourself credit for.
NEVER get rid of that Synthetic Design 2. Ever.
It's the sound of Slow Mo Guys for me
@@KevinBerstene It's the sound of the internet I'd say
The attention to detail is seriously an art form. I mean 9 hours just doing sound for one video like that’s intense and the result is more beautiful than the random viewer could imagine. And the sound for filling up silence is both comforting/familiar and perfectly relaxing. Sometimes “professional” is just years of experience, hard work, and passion
“Slow Down” into a speed-ramped “Synthetic Design 2” is when you know you’re about to see some cool shit.
IT'S BLUE
Be careful about replacing that "Synthetic Design 2" sound. To me, that sound IS a Slo-Mo Guys vid. It's like your trademark. Change with caution.
@@BLenz-114 I agree 100%. This is de facto THE SOUND of Slow Mo Guys. Whether it was planned to be so is irrelevant.
The cat purring actually made me laugh. I was not expecting that
Hell, I just thought the cat purr was interesting... I love cats and have owned many of them... And love the sound of their purr, but that slo mo sound was quite fascinating...
I would be soo sad if the “choir” sound got taking out. Its soo relaxing and its just apart of the slow mo guys. Please never remove that from your videos 🙏🙏🙏
It's called space ambience search it up if you want
The most he should do would be to get a professional electronic musician to add a few bars to extend it where needed... But certainly mustn't change it
This.
I'm sure he would swap it by a similar sound and not replace it forever, but merely sometimes.
It's actually 'ambient' music btw. It's a genre. The space part is just what it's themed around.
If I ever see slowmo without sound. The choir always comes to mind. As if it is the sound you get from filming in slowmo
That's a Simone Giertz Calendar in the background for anyone wondering.
Adam Savage (Mythbusters) just did a video all about that calender. Super cool

YES! The Everyday Calendar!
I noticed it immediately. 😀
@Nani Nano Looks like he’s using it for another purpose; important dates perhaps.
As someone who is going to school for Sound Design, this video was absolutely fascinating! The fact that you just intuitively taught yourself something I'm paying a collage to teach me is quite impressive
KEEP SYNTHETIC DESIGN 2!! Seriously though, it has become your trademark. Bob Ross absolutely hated his afro, but decided to keep it for decades because it was associated with him.
I personally find SD2 and the CHEWWwwww~ sound that you use for entering super-slo-mo to go quite well together, and I expect them every time.
Since I am one of the people that has watched every one of your uploads, I can say that yes I had noticed repeating sounds across several vids, and it doesn't matter at all - I still thoroughly enjoy them every time.
exactly, he has subconsciously built brand identity into the sounds, in a way that maybe only VSauce has achieved besides him
I think there was an episode in the show episodes that didn't have SD2 and it really weirded me out. I totally agree it needs to stay!
Shoutout to Simone Gertz's Everyday Calendar in the background
I've been waiting for Gav to flex his sound design for idk how many years now, and it was even better than I could imagine.
We love "Synthetic Design 2", it's already the official song of the channel. I specially love the fact that, in Planet Slow Mo, there's an orchestral version of it
It would be too jarring if they replaced the synth choir, I'm so used to it now.
It literally brings a whole clip together. Definitely a familiar sound for any Slo Mo Guys fan
I don't know that...
Which episode...?
The one where they were catching fish on the Illinois River
How different would the main channel be without Gav's perfectionism that he actually achieves for every video. He just described some of the most extensive, well-thought-of sound design on any UA-cam channel as "I just wing it"
I mean, honestly, that's kind of what all Foley is. You take a clip that has no sound, then just mess around until you find a sound that your brain goes "yeah, that's what that sounds like."
Try this; pull up two videos. One of bacon sizzling and another of rain on concrete. Mute the rain video, play them both at the same time, but just stare at the rain video. It won't take too long until your brain will just hear rain.
I'm leaving you for Synthetic Design 2.
:o
I'm Genuinely Surprised that its the actual Meg Commenting and Not a Spoof Account. LMAO
I’m surprised that not only is this the real meg it’s her first comment on this channel
huge if true
Why aren’t you verified?
I see you have Simone Giertz’s calendar in the back
That’s the first thing I noticed!
Snap haha
I spotted it seventeen and half seconds into the vid ;)
Was wondering who else would notice that lol
Legit just commented about the calendar, I need one.
The "synthetic design 02" is like your, The Slow Mo Guys, signature sound because to me it sounds perfect during ALL of your slow shots. I've always liked that sound because to me it is a "I'm immersed in this very slow shot" kinda feel. Also the 'slow down" sound is another signature sound. Awesome work Gav. I know I'm late to the party but I am just now watching this video. Keep up the awesome work and hopefully Dan can get on a plane soon and get back to the USA and film together again!
Pleeaaaasse no other backgeound slow mo sound, this one has become a sort of trade mark of your channel. If I hear that sound anywhere I instantly think: "uuhh slow mo guys, I like"
I like how every time he says something like "I just felt that it'd sound like this" or "I wanted it sound like this" and everyone, literally millions of people like every single pick of a sound he makes
Synthetic Design 02 is iconic. Never change it - it’s perfect
This is one of the best sound design workshops I've ever seen. It's just as good as your exposure and focus one.
Why is David Guetta talking to me about slow motion
LMFAO
Why wouldn't he? :D
Do a collaboration with him. Maybe then some people would understand that you replace the sound.
Random person: damn this fireball sounds exactly like the song memories... ...so catchy
This video did not take away any of the magic you guys do with each one. I truly enjoyed hearing you nerd out about sound. And the purring ? Killed me. Cheers Gav and Dan!
The ultimate flex, showing us how he does his job knowing full well someone could try and replicate his work. Really highlights the genuine intent to share knowledge at the core of Slow Mo Guys.
B.T. Express let’s be honest, who else is gonna spend 9 hours on sound design for a video? People can try and replicate it, but without the hard work and dedication, it will show it’s no competitor.
@Benjamin McCann Oh, cool.
You should see Louis Rossmann then lmao
I love the synthetic design sound in your vids. It’s very relaxing..not sure how to describe it otherwise. I love the “slow down” sound, too. Amazing amount of work that goes into every second of every video. I had no idea. Thank you.
When I started getting more into sound design a couple years ago I was blown away at how important it was, and how quickly it can take a project from "ehhh, it's passable" to "this is now fantastic."
I took a film making class a couple years ago as an elective, and one of our assignments was "Polish a Turd," IE: We were given a bunch of really crap footage, with horrible acting, and a very loose narrative. We were told to edit it together in any way we saw fit to make it better. Most people focused purely on the sequences and cutting together of the shots, but me and 1 other guy put a lot of effort into the sound and ended up making the two best and most cohesive versions.
Duality of Men (Film school)
In all my time watching the Slow Mo Guys, I've never noticed this was edited. You've done an amazing job masking the lack of sound over the years, great job!
Gavin looks like he did when he was 14 and joined the RT site...
We've come full circle
14 y/o grizzly Adams.
I hope people now realise how much effort Gav puts into all these videos and he's not just the guy who presses record while Dan does the dangerous stuff.
I have to say that the synthetic design sound used is pretty iconic for this channel. It gives us that wonderful feeling of drama and awe and wonder from watching this slow motion action. Well done!
Please never change you're background noise filler noise. Its part of slow mo guys in my head in a way that truly brings me comfort in every one of your videos. Change up however else, but that sound and the slow mo guys attitude is immutable
Has anyone ever actually complained about the audio being synthesized? Is this the approach that theatrical slo-mo sound design takes as well? I remember you describing the ambient sound you made and it''s become iconic with the channel at this point lol
It's the Internet, friend. Every possible thing has been complained about. www.ftrain.com/wwic
@@CyclingGeo Hahahahha you can't be serious. Most people don't realise? Surely most people don't even realise the tooth fairy isn't real.
Gavin Free: searches libraries for the perfect sound
Me: reaches for the nearest object to force it to make the sound i want
@Benjamin McCann Yeah, I know, bud. Just making a joke.
I love that the ICONIC SlowMo guys music that’s in the background of every video is just some random clip from the internet from 10 years ago slowed down.
Please don’t change it! Or if you do, get someone to compose something new using it!
Gav: when it’s slowed down, everything just sounds the same.
Also Gav: uses the same sound in like 20 videos for different things.
Honestly, the fake sounds always bothered me a bit, but now that you've justified them, I don't think they will anymore.
And that background audio? Don't ever change it-it's become a cool sound in itself, because I associate it with the cool visuals.
Rewatching some old Slow Mo Guys videos and came across this one, and I noticed Gav has one of Simone's Every Day Calendars! That's awesome!
"Synthetic Design 02" merch, please 😆
Gavin Free, you are one of the most talented and dedicated nerds I have ever had the honor to witness. Thank you for your detailed explanation of your sound design methods and execution. Thank you very, very much for your dedication to such tedious and lengthy procedures. They exquisitely enhance the videos.
Im a sound engineer and would like to mention that there is a program for massively time-stretching sound files while retaining fidelity it can timestretch by huge amounts , its a freebie program called paul stretch it has a hyperstretch mode which can stretch audio by 1,000,000,000,000,000,000 times... yes you read that right, Google 'Paul Stretch' to find it
Isn’t it just all dependent on the sample rate and fidelity? Isn’t there only so much information in the file? Kinda like zooming in 10000x on a low Rez image
@@rallygsixtwo4836 ever heard of resampling? When done right you can achieve incredible results for slowing down audio. But it has it’s drawbacks. As you said there’s only „that“ much information originally captured and thus everything in between is basically clever guesswork
@@rallygsixtwo4836 The sound Paulstretch makes is best described by imagining small frames of sound put thru a massive reverb one after another, which is used to "fill in the gaps". Search for example in youtube, there is bound to be a lot of them.
I was wondering how it worked , thanks squid , not sure how good it would work on vocals but it does a brilliant job on music , so worth a try
@@damiandeadbeats yeah, but it's not entirely accurate. once you re-speed the stretched sample, it would have a different sound. it all depends entirely on the algorithm, and on the sample that's being used.
I figured some sounds were fake but never realized how many. Absolutely mad amount of effort and skill and brilliance go into that. The attention to detail to the beautiful shots and added sounds, like the shot of the ball rolling across the rail. Absolutely mind blowing. Mad respect for all the videos.
Even the wobling of the pinball decor whle you were explaining that it has to sound "wobly" in slowmo, my brian was like "No! That's definitely how it actually sounds"
I remember a couple years back when you explained how you got the background noise by using a slowed down choir effect! Such hard work doing slow motion. Way to keep up the hard work
I have always loved the choir sound it’s something I’ve always looked out for. It’s iconic at this point.
Looks like Simone's calander isn't being used very well
Please never change the background music. It's iconic!
The incredible amount of tweaking and tuning that video editing takes is mind blowing. Add in the effort that it takes to come up with most of your videos sound on the fly. Sound is something that most people take for granted not having to get or edit. Bravo, Gavin.
Gav I've learnt so much from you. Your videos on how cameras, focus etc work literally made me go out, buy a DSLR camera and a bunch of lenses and taught me DSLR photography from zero pre-existing knowledge. I hope you know this video will do the same for sound designers, editors etc. You are incredibly generous with your knowledge and an exceptional teacher!
How does Gavin do this stuff but then turn around and get his finger stuck in his desk?
Kinda like how im decent at art but math kicks my ass lol. I think it's the perfect combo of "the smartest person in the room" and "the dumbest". We love him
Gav tends to let his dumber or less skillful side of him run away with it sometimes for content. It’s like he willfully turns off some of his common sense since it makes for more entertaining videos lol
he's incredibly intelligent...not very smart
@@Memphis_ritz sounds rather like Link Neal 😂
Some of the smartest people I’ve ever met, wouldn’t know to use an umbrella in the rain
You say the comments are a combo of "Well obviously we knew that” and “Wow, I had no idea”, but to be honest both of those are true. There's a lot of elements to your work that are clearly added in post like the choir, the speed ups, the silly things, and even some of the more obviously bombastic sounds - but I would never have considered just how little of the audio is from actual footage, nor how much work you put into it. It's one of those kinda unfortunate things where, if the end product works really well, the effort almost goes unnoticed. So, as a sound designer myself, I'm really glad you made this inspiring and informative video.
"Just from a different moment in time" that line gave me some kind of enlightenment
Hey,
You've got Simone Giertz's calendar.
Cool :)
I noticed that too! I think its a cool calender
All this extra work really shows in the videos and brings the quality up to the next level. I would have guessed a much higher percentage of the sounds were native to the actual video.
Much better than nothing, and the little music during slow mo also wraps everything up
The sound design is so fucking good, the fact that you learned all this on the fly is amazing
Oh hey, that's Simone Giertz's calendar on the wall!
Synthetic Design 2 was the sound that immediately became iconic to me, in pavlovian sense almost. When I hear it, I know I'm in for a treat, and seeing slowmo footage without this layer sound feels kinda hollow now.
Also, this really shows how much effort is put into post-prod, 9 hours on the sounds alone, put aside other montage thingies like color grading and cutting. The result is really worth it tho, love your videos guys!
Your sound might be fake, but my love for you is very real
this is actually so good, people don't realize that how much of videos we watch us actually the sound we here. watch and movie or video that has music and if you take it out the clip loses all it's affect
Have you ever used one of those special ultrasonic recorders? I know some of the Avisoft systems can go up to 750 kHz.
No I’d love to try though
Back in the day when audio cassettes were king I discovered I could force my tape recorder to fast forward at the same time as record and would get some pretty good 'slow mo' audio when played back normally. If I remember rightly I had to record complete silence on the tape at normal speed first though.
@@coctailrob
Now that's something for someone like Hainbach should try.
And I guess the tapedeck had the erase-head disabled during fast winding but not the record head. What factor of slowness were achieved with this?
Boy, did this comment send me down the rabbit hole! Most of this equipment seems to be intended to wildlife recording (especially bat and insects). Here's an example of a forest with the sound slowed down 20x : www.cornell.edu/video/tropical-forest-ultrasound-soundscape
And then this: www.zachpoff.com/resources/exploring-ultrasound/

When you hear "Synthetic Design 02" you know you are watching Slo Mo Guys. Dont change it ever!
I feel like it would be awesome to record some kind of "Gav working on sound design" livestream. For those of us in lockdown, it'd be great to have a virtual workmate working on something amazing next door.
I love that you can explain this so easily as to why you're doing it so that it would make sense for anyone. I'm an idiot and I understand it. Thank you, Gavin.
Please never get rid of Synthetic Design 2. It's the iconic 'slow mo' sound!
There's something oddly satisfying about the Red in the RGB overlay slowly disappearing as you watch the Water Balloon pop at 21:30 while Gavin shows off the Waterfall sound effect.
I don't know nothing about sound design really, but I am an avid lover of HiFi and I must say your guys videos are a real joy to watch and listen to. I know that slowmo sound isn't that good to listen to, but it has never been in my mind while watching, so that is a testament to how well you sound design is working. I never feel like its out of place or sound fake, it's like great CGI the only way you know if its great is if nobody notice it...
I think it's a big part of why your videos are so enjoyable, great stuff and I hope we get to see/hear more from you guys together sometime soon!
Loving the everyday calendar in the background! Well done for supporting other talented UA-camrs like yourself!
Gavin, I love your sound design in the videos, its great to see how much the sound compliments the footage you show us. Have you ever used an ultrasound microphone at 192 KHz sample rate (or higher) to capture sound so that the pitch of the audio when slowed down is still in the audible range?
192kHz at their fastest slow-mo is... actually reasonable. That translates roughly into 5kHz?
Dude you're a audio/video genius in my mind. That amount of layering takes some serious thought, especially with the slow/up downs in it. Not to mention you've gotta try to be witty and relevant in your videos, which I know I'd never have the balls to do. Good job Gav, and I loved seeing Dan with his face in the water balloon again. That ones priceless.
One of those things that if you're doing it right, the viewer should never notice. You make an immersive experience
I see Gavin is sporting the Jesus haircut today.
This is more impressive than a lot of the footage haha. Really cool process
Do not ever change Synthetic Design 02!
It was another video that opened my eyes to the fact that the sound of incredibly slow clips is entirely manufactured, but this brings me another level of appreciation for your editing. After hearing the sound design of other channels, it always sounds slightly off, a bit too wet or crunchy for the clip, and then I realized that stems from how incredible your sound design is.
This is freaking brilliant! The time and effort you put into this amazes me. "I want someone that is looking here, to notice a sound if it does something weird" wow! Thank you thank you thank you!
Absolutely incredible. Who knew how much work went into just the audio, not to mention the video. Crazy amount of respect for the time that goes into QOL stuff. Thank you for the extensive peek behind the curtains.
It's like 2012 Gav is back, with a lot more beard
I am so curious what Gavin is tracking on Simone's Every Day Calendar back there. I haven't watched a SMG video in a while - has it been mentioned?
I thought that the synthetic choir sound that are in every video was just the sound of slow motion. Like that's just how reality sounds when you move really slowly.
16:34 I have no idea how many times I've asked Google "what is this music" for this background track...
Thank you for answering my question when Google could not. NEVER CHANGE IT! It's part of the reason I keep coming back to this channel. That and your antics with Dan and the quasi-educational bits....
Had no idea you were doing this yourself. Way more impressed at your videos now. Figured you hired a sound designer a long time ago
This is amazingly complicated, yet it sounds very believable when it's all playing together. Editing is already time consuming imagine doing this for every single video, that is commitment. 👍
I like the way you work. At the beginning I was thinking it's not the real sound but one day I thougth "There is so much details no one can think about slo mo sounds, so it's real" You get me, good job! ;)
Editing is such a time consuming process. Synthetic Design 2 is now the channel's signature. Never change it!
A friend used to work as a VT editor for television news. He said that sometimes he would just have silent video of say a hillside and bombed out houses in the Middle East, he would add sounds of gunfire and wind noises to make it more interesting. Sometimes other vehicle noise at low level.
I knew you put a lot of work into the sound design but i'm actually amazed at just how much work you put into it. Absolutley amazing man.
Every video I watch now I think back to this video and how you had to pick a sound for almost every event happening, it's great.
I bet a zipper opening/closing would make a good effect for the balloon ripping & velcro would be interesting for embers crackling.
The Slow Mo Guys really put a lot of time and effort into their videos. This explanation video gives us a better understanding of the amount of work and consideration they've dedicated. Thank you Slow Mo Guys for providing such fascinating and beautiful content all these years. I hope you guys are well, and please take good care of yourselves.
So slow mo guys are just accidentally became the expert of sound designs.
Please never change the choir sound. It's so relaxing. Perfect sound
Never even stopped to think about the sound being added, edited, etc. Save for that sweet sweet synthetic choir, of course. Shows how well you've been doing it all this time!
