Microgreen N.F.T. walk-through with Molly's Micros!! On the Grow

  • 💥Remember the 'How to build' video for our NFT aka Nutrient Film Technique automated hydroponic growing system that we posted hoping that it would inspire others to take our build and customize it further!? 》》
    🥳Well, our friend Sean Haverty over at Molly's Micros customized our design and made it even more awesome for his 10yr old daughter Molly and their Microgreen business!! (Father of the year!!🙌)
    ✅So, we asked him if he could make a video and show everything that he changed and upgraded to make the NFT system better suit their needs. We're happy to see someone doing what we hoped people would do with our simple design and really make it their own. We definitely hope to see more alterations over time because it's so cool to see what the community can do!
    ➡️➡️As for the NFT system in our grow space, today we will be taking it apart and will be selling it (we have a second system stored) so that we can make space for our new rack that's coming! The NFT is great for commercial production, but we love experiments and need more shelf space for them! We are also adding a tower system to our grow space as well... **2022 update - we ended up donating the entire grow system to a good cause that's teaching people how to grow in their local community.
    HOW TO BUILD THE NFT SYSTEM ➽ • Custom NFT Rack "how-t...
    In the "How to Build" video linked above, CJ guides you through how to build a N.F.T. system for Microgreens from scratch. The estimated ➽ Build Cost for this system is about $1,537.50 for all components (not including tools) ➽ We also provided the Build Measurements via a screenshot of all the measurements at the end of the video so you can pause and grab that info! Below are also links to the supplies we used!

    To Shawn: I suggest keeping metals out of the nutrient system since that can cause problems, instead have a look into fish tank filters. there are various micron sized meshes in bag forms, from small socks, to large sieves. they are easy to use and clean, and they won't screw up your water ;)

    Hello! Thanks for the great video, I'm planning to switch to NFT soon. Are you using meshed trays or trays with holes? Do you think my actual 1.25'' deep trays with holes would do the same job?

    Love all your videos. I have a growing business because of you two and I really appreciate all you’ve shared. I’ve been growing exclusively in soil and want to move to nft but have found almost nothing on how to grow micros in an nft set up, what grows well and what doesn’t. It would be really great to be able to step away for 24 to 72 hours to help my aging parents without losing all of my plants that are out of blackout…what resources do you recommend to get up to speed on nft?

    nice setup, for experiments, you aught to try ebb and flow with the trays sitting off the ground so they can properly drain. Im sure having a constant wet bottom, and no air flow is 50% of diseases

    Any clever ideas how to add wheel casters on the conduit poles?

    • @OnTheGrow
      @OnTheGrow  4 роки тому

      Great Question! I actually ended up 3D designing and 3D printing some connectors for mine... I think that's quickly talked about in our Custom Flood and Drain build video. It was really easy to find some casters at a hardware store, then you just gotta figure out how to get them to fit into the conduit. I bought my caster smaller and then 3D printed a spacer to fit over the caster and hold it snug in the conduit pipe. You can make a space out of wood with a hole saw and a drill bit. Just gotta make sure its the right size for the conduit.

    Hey guys! I wanted to ask on your take against filtered vs tap water. I know you guys use a filter for your water, but I was wondering what your views on using tap water for microgreens is. I see alot of big growers on youtube use tap water regularly and I wanted to see if you guys thought there is a dramatic difference between using filtered water. Thanks!

    • @OnTheGrow
      @OnTheGrow  4 роки тому +1

      Honesty I feel like both are great solutions! I do think that it is wise to have your water tested, just so you have a good understanding of your water source. It really helps with figuring out if you need a filter and if so, what specifically are you aiming to filter out of your current tap water. We currently use one to reduce chlorine and a few other potential contaminates like lead and heavy metals... some cities have amazing tap water while others are questionable. Hope that helps!! 🌱🌱

      @erich4329 4 роки тому

      @@OnTheGrow Do you think using Reverse osmosis filtration is overkill? It's only way to remove Fluoride. Makes sense to work with clean pure water and just add what is needed.

    • @OnTheGrow
      @OnTheGrow  4 роки тому

      If we hand water, we will water twice a day usually once morning and once evening. When its automated like in this system, we will think its best to run it for 1-minute, once a day and that seems to be sufficient for the microgreens. Hope that helps!

    Wouldn't it be cheaper with more space to use flood trays over fodder channels?

    • @OnTheGrow
      @OnTheGrow  4 роки тому

      Potentially depending on how many flood trays you’re able to stack vertically and what size flood trays you’re using. My main concern is the reservoir size needed for flood trays. With NFT, I am able to get away with a much much smaller reservoir because it’s only a thin film of water instead of having to flood an entire deep tray system. Plus we didn’t like use a flood tray for micros, we kept getting issues from over-watering...

    • @helenkorb164
      @helenkorb164 4 роки тому +1

      @@OnTheGrow I orginally started with flood trays and had a nightmare of a time with overwatering, rotting and mold from too much water that soaked the stems and leaves when they are smaller. I've gone to hand watering and can't wait to move to NFT system now with higher volumes of micros.

    • @OnTheGrow
