Just attended my first PRS match this past weekend (MDT Frostbite), and it was honestly the most wholesome experience I could've ever imagined. Every single person that showed up from all around the country (and even several from other countries) was super nice and helpful. Got to see a bunch of the MDT guys (and gals) shoot, which was honestly incredible. I spent a good amount of time talking with the MDT pros about what to really focus on for rapid improvement, and even got to spend a little 1 on 1 time with Andy Slade to learn even more about building good shooting habits and shooting out past 1k. I was extremely intimidated the entire 3 hour drive there and even up through the early stages, but it very quickly became evident that everyone there just wants to help and loves to see others succeed! People in this sport are so nice and helpful compared to many other disciplines I've competed it, and it genuinely caught me off guard. If you're a newer shooter reading this and you're on the fence about going to your first match for any reason whatsoever, just throw those thoughts out and get out there! It's seriously not as scary as you think! You'll learn a lot and you'll meet a lot of incredible people! It's 100% worth it!

Shot my first two matches the last month and a half. Started PRS at 56 years of age and been having a blast. Just sign up and commit to the match, you will learn so much and meet alot of good people. I have improved since my first match and now its addicting to improve my skills more. Remember to just be cool & calm when shooting and have a good time.

If you have interest just bite the bullet and go to the match. I just shot my second match after shooting groups off a bench for 6 or 8 months. It’s made me realize I have so much to learn and it makes you a better shooter because your range days now have a purpose vs just slinging lead. Enjoy all the content Pete!

I shot my first match this weekend and have spent a ton of time on your channel after registering. You are absolutely right that the shooting community is very welcoming - I've always made sure to extend the olive branch to new pistol shooters, and the PRS guys I shot with this weekend did the same for me.
Guys were willing to share their gear and knowledge freely, lots of laughs and a good time was had by all.
My biggest takeaway was to bring your DOPE and target ranges with you to the line for EVERY stage. I zero'd an easy one because I dialed for a 720m target instead of 800m - target numbers were labeled, and I got mixed up. Time goes by quick, have a plan to adapt!

I finally got to shot my first match last month. It was a NRL22 style match at a local club. I've been wanting to do this for a year now. I pretty much talked myself out of competing on the drive to the match do to being so nervous and some issues with rifle. At the very last minute I realized this is what I have been wanting to do for so long and signed up. I'm so glad I did! I soaked everything up and had lots of fun. I will be attending every month in hopes of learning and improving. Plan on shooting a NRL22X match in next couple months. Hopefully by sharing this will get someone to make that leap and shoot their first s t match.

I did my first big match a few weeks ago. My first big match was a national PRS match, I had shot a few little club matches but this was the big leagues, I went in with the mindset that I was there to have fun and learn. That I did, wind was horrible both days. But learned what I need to work on and had a great time. Other shooters were saying that was one of the toughest matches they had shot, small targets, quick times and 2 days of brutal winds

I've been shooting USPSA style pistol matches for several years. The day before the pistol matches they would have the long range match. Well, I decided to RO the long range matches. Thought "I'm getting to know these guys, they always need RO's, I'm already here, why not RO?" Yep, should have known better. It's now a full weekend when I go to the range for matches. I mean, I stay at the range. I take my camper. I get there Friday morning and don't leave until Sunday afternoon. lol
I took a long range course at the end of May. My rifle is set, loads are set. Now it boils down to me. First precision match is two weeks from today. Oddly enough I'm not really nervous. I don't expect to win. I'm not stupid. I'm doing it to have fun. Plain and simple. If this tells you anything I'm running a M1A in .308. lol (That's a whole story in itself. Building a bolt gun this winter though.)
Too quote one of the guys that shoots precision here "just shoot and have fun". No better advice than that.

Skip the Ro part and just stop worrying and go shoot a match. You’ll learn 1000x more than with anything else you’ll try to get confortable. Forget about confort and step out of your confort zone. That’s where you learn.
Make sure you have the following:
    - 1 moa ammo/rifle setup that HAVE a cheek riser and PROPER LOP( pretty easy to do)
    - Scope that have the turret and reticule in the same unit. Ideally a reticule that is usable (Mil-Dot being like the bare minimum to have a good experience)
-A bipod ( Harris is perfect to start and keep for a long time)
    - Ideally come with a Trusty dope or be ready for the struggle bus.
    - If you don’t have a dope at least have your velocity.
    - Come with an open mind and be confident even if you don’t feel like it . Mental is everything so keep positif and motivate yourself.
    - STREAMLINE your thought process. You’ll be under stress so don’t overload your brain and focus on the execution not on the outcome.
    - LISTEN to people
    - DONT talk too much but PREPARE your stage.
    - READ the stage description
    - OBSERVE people and be on glass all the time
    - ASK other more experienced shooter for tips and bag. Don’t be shy!
    -Be SAFE
    - TAKE notes
    - Enjoy your experience
-Don’t buy any bags before your first match. Try and observe what ppl use and decide with your own experience!
-If you reload don’t get crazy . Don’t chase SD or ES forever if your not able to. SD’s of 15 fps are totally OK. Make sure it’s reliable that’s your main goal.

Shot my first match 2 weeks ago and my biggest tip of advice is to go in with a goal that isn't revolved about success.
My goal was to not take any shots I wasn't sure about. Ie don't rush for the clock. I accepted I was going to time out on most stages but I wasn't sending ammo before I thought about my position and fundamentals.
Next is don't get caught up in all the gear people have. They have been collecting it for years. It's super easy to jump online and price up the best 6mm in a mental chassis, but they have more than just a good setup They have the positions down and understand their systems.
Don't get disheartened. Practice positions, and go back and shoot again! 🇦🇺

I went to my first match a few weeks ago. It was 7 stages and 3 shots per stage with one stage only 2 shots. Setup with different "hunting scenarios". Only one stage was timed. It was so much fun that I'm going back for another event in just over a week and a half. I love shooting steel. Its a riot. Great thing about a match is it pushes you to see your potential especially shooting from different positions. You do learn a lot as well as spend time spotting. Which is a much needed skill to acquire. Awesome content! I enjoy watching you shoot to see what I can do better or differently. Would love to go out hunting/shooting with you. Especially for baboons!

Shot my first match yesterday. It was a PRS match using 22lr and I had a blast. Everything you said was 100% correct. Everyone was great and very helpful. Although I have a ton of experience shooting handguns and rifles, I sucked big time. I made some great friendships that should develop over time. A couple guys on my squad were sponsored professionals and we had many National Champions shooting the match. They were fantastic.
Things that held me back: I was rushed putting my rifle together and it was not 100% but I was able to identify its weak points. One thing that really hurt me was I did not anticipate how much time I consumed making each shot. Being a timed event, I did not complete a single course of fire. I was slow because I did not train to be fast. I trained to shoot good targets. Being rushed, I shot poorly.
I will be back next month. Actually, I have another match in 6 days at another club. To prepare, I’m going to get my rifle running better and practice at a faster pace. I’m not going to throw money at my problems, instead working on the skills needed to perform well.
Don’t be fearful of being a new shooter. New shooters are expected to perform poorly.

I shot my first match in January with a buddies .223 gasser and scored hits to 650yds+/-. I just have a Mossberg but once we got the velocity I made some hits at 840yds with it. Now I have a TL3 sitting here with a Brux heavy palma 26" in 6GT waiting for the XRX Chassis to come in next week and then top it with a Mark 5HD 5-25. The Pelican V800 just came in and I can't wait to carve the foam and place the new beauty in there. I guess you could say I'm pretty fascinated with this sport! Reloading equipment is next. Also have plans to get a 6.5prc proof carbon fiber prefit for hunting since the bolt face on the TL3 is interchangeable. Or maybe a 7saum? Not sure yet. Don't get to caught up in cartridges. I placed really well with a 22" Bergara 6.5 cm before I switch to a custom rifle.
Run what you got and save up money because it won't be long before you get a custom rifle built or a high end optic.
Play with everyone's rifles and optics to find what you like before you spend money on another setup. The goal is to get what you actually want and do it only once.
Also don't get caught up in running cartridges as fast as you can because if it rains or get dusty, you're going to be popping primers and dealing with hard bolt lift. Keep it moderate.
Had a guy last month that was smacking his bolt open all day because it got too hot and his score took a big hit because of it.

    question for everyone.
signed up for my first precision rifle match this month, and just want to shoot and get started. While I am excited to shoot and compete, I just cannot definitively decide on what caliber I want to shoot with or whether to run a semi auto or, bolt action.
    In bolt action I have:
    Ruger 6.5 CM
    Rem700 SPS tactical 223
Ruger 338 LM (thats not happening...)
    Semi Auto:
    223/556
    6.5 grendel
    224 valkyrie
    7.62x39 (no precision there)
    308
The match will be 8 stages with 80-100 rounds fired. That is all I know about the match as postd.
Everything I own has sub moa accuracy at 100/200yds
I do not have a local range which affords past 200yds. So I will be relying on my dope for all distances past that.
    Any suggestions are appreciated.

I'd pick the bolt action 6.5CM out of those. I shoot a 6GT, but still practice with a 6.5CM. It'll cut the wind good and reach out as far as you need it to. Practice positional shooting 1-2 moa size targets at your local range and you'll do fine.

So from the invite i understand that its going to be a min of 100 round match with a total of 10 stages, and a prize table. now i'm not sure if i should bring all the gear that i have. shooting mat, impact data book, spotting scope, range finder, wind meter, gun, for i have never been to this kind of shooting match. i have done some 3-gun were we bring a cart to hold our "stuff" when not in cases with flags. any recommendations for going to my first match here in NJ? am i bringing too much, too little. help plz

I am from Cape Town, Just finished putting together my first rifle. Guess it's kind of a "Budget" rifle (Been doing it in steps as the finances allowed). Howa 308 with an MDT Oryx chassis, Vortex PST gen 1 5-25x50 scope. I bought a Suppressor (silencer), but maybe I should have rather bought a muzzle brake......!?
Gonna try to break in the barrel this weekend, been struggling to find a range that''s open. After I have actually shot this rifle I will look at entering one of these matches. I just want to know what kind of distances you shoot? So that I can decide on a bullet weight and do load development and work out DOPE etc. Probably getting ahead of myself here. Haha
Anyway I enjoy the videos, keep it up! Nice to see something shooting related happening in Cape Town, as it feels like most of it happens "up country". LOL

Hi Robert. Join the NRL in Cape Town; the last match was only out to about 550m. See you on the range sometime.

Shot my first precision rifle match with my 3 Gun rifle (18 inch .223 and a 1-6x scope). It wasn't the rifle that held me back!

I just acquired a Falcon Optics S30 as my first FFP optic. Once I get the fundamentals down, is this scope good enough to bring out to a competition eventually? I have a R700 AAC-SD in .308 with a insite arm's heathen brake in the factory stock. I am aware I will have to get a detachable box magazine system but as far as the optic goes, will it hold up well?

Looking to shoot in my first LRR competition but am kinda nervous. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated. I do shoot a Ruger Precision in 6.5 creed and have shot out to 1000 ya on steel and do that pretty comfortably. Thanks

How taxing is a match on your body? I have major back issues from a bad car wreck so I never looked into even going to a match.

Usually matches are ran on Facebook and practiscore.
You can search practiscore for matches close by. Go to practiscore -> upcoming matches -> select long range rifle-> browse across youre state. You will have to create an account if you want to sign up.

nationalrifleleague.org and precisionrifleseries.com These should list their 1 & 2 day matches. For non-affiliated local club matches, best bet is practiscore

Just go! How good your rifle shoots doesn't really matter. Most guys have tomuch gear. Shoot slow and deliberate and take time to observe the wind down range. Dont try to shoot all 10 rounds on a stage you'll just miss.
