My grandfather, Don Heller, performed with them and opened for them on several occasions. He said that the oldest one, LaVerne, was a prankster, and if a filler performer would, say, do the splits, she'd take a piece of canvas and tear it, making it sound like the performer had torn their pants.
Ladies and Gentlemen - as important as this recording was for the Andrews Sisters it holds a very important distinction. This is the first record Buddy Rich ever played on. This is a 20 year old Buddy on drums. So, not only is this an Andrews Sisters classic, it's also a historic track.
I came here to post just that info. But I see you’re a year ahead of me!! I’m reading Buddy Rich’s biography and just learned about his playing on that song. His talents weren’t very much pushed, but, as you say, it’s historic for that reason too.

God, the trumpets are so *grimy* I love it. It mixes the normal style of the andrew sisters crazy well with that specific kind of “sinister jazz” sound!
This is one of the most embarrassing things I have ever had to admit. I'm 73 and have been listening to this song all my life. I liked it enough but never really listened to it with my full attention. I always thought they were saying "something, something, Mr. Shane". Tonight I watched a biography on the girls and they mentioned this song being their first hit. Afterward I thought, "Hmm, I think I'll listen to that, since I don't remember ever hearing it before. So I came here and immediately recognized the tune. I never recognized that "something something Mr. Shane" was actually "Bei Mir Bist Du Schon". And here's the kicker. I have been fluent in German for most of my life. My mind just never picked the German words out of the flow of the English lyrics. Facepalm. 😟😟
Well, in reality the only German word in this version of the song is "wunderbar." The title itself, Bei Mir Bist Du Schön, is Yiddish : בײַ מיר ביסטו שעהן. The written title for this and pretty much all subsequent versions is simply a Latinization using German orthography. Originally written in 1932 with all Yiddish lyrics, by American songwriters Shalom Secunda (music) and Jacob Jacobs (lyrics), for a Yiddish musical (which was not particularly successful), the lryics were re-written with (mostly) English words by American songwriters Sammy Cahn and Saul Chaplin, though they kept the Yiddish title. The Andrews Sisters, of course, had a huge hit in 1937 singing the English version. Here is a version sung in both the original Yiddish and in English. You can hear the same Yiddish words used in both versions. m.ua-cam.com/video/ZUVEq6NC7mM/v-deo.html
@@aresee8208 Well neighbor, I checked all the same stuff you quoted from Wikipedia and all I can tell you is that if you go to Wilhelmshaven and tell a girl "Bei mir bist du schon" (To me you are beautiful), you will get either a big smile or be beaten up by her boyfriend for hitting on his girl. If you say it to a girl in Haifa, only Heaven knows what you'll get. Oh, and "sehr" (very) is also German.
