our previous cargo was Coal in Indonesia and next Cargo is Raw Sugar in Paranagua Brazil so we must sets a Grain Standard for this cleaning.

@@FilgregRollon as a child I had this idea that oil tankers could off load oil pushed out by pumping in another cargo into an expanding bellows-like flexible 'bag'. As the bellows-bag expanded the oil would be pushed out by displacement. This would get round the need to clean the hold. Sometimes there would be two opposeable bellows made of some super tough nylon like material. It is funny what children think!

We did this job enroute from Japan to Portland Oregon in the winter back in the sixties, it was absolutely freezing cold, and we went north about, we earned our forty pounds a month in those days!

1:54 Safety First my backside 😮 the opening shot of the guys sitting on the hold combing under a partially open hatch cover and no apparent safety lines gave me the willies just watching. It didn't look much safer once they were in the hold proper.... but they did seem to get the job done!
Before jobs like these they have to do risk assesment signed by captain, that ensures safety of workers. They are properly secured , otherwise they wouldnt even get close to hatch.There are a lot of safety rules working aboard a ship
@@edvardseglitis7128 Well aware of shipboard safety requirements, naval officer here. But safety standards of civilian ships vary a lot based on port of registry, area ship is working and the ethics of the owners. If they are tied off great but it isn't visible to the viewer. But no matter what sitting on the hatch combings under partly open covers which are probably hydraulically actuated is inherently dangerous. Were a hydraulic seal to fail the hatch covers would close and these guys have no chance of escape. Maybe this is common practice in the merchant Marine but I can assure you almost everything seen in this video wouldn't be done in the cleaning of a naval supply ship.

What a fascinating look at things one normally wouldn't even think about. The hold in that ship is cavernous. How many cups of tea will the next cargo of raw sugar sweeten ?

The most dangerous and interesting thing I have ever seen was when I first got to clean holds, the AB's tied ropes between italy ladders and some rings on the bulkhead and used safety belt to move. They were like both spiders and cable cars xD

hard to believe no one has invented a magnetic crawler type of scrubber that would just work it's way up and down the walls like a rumba.
That looks seriously hard work, imagine that with 9 holds. How do you dry it after all that water ends up on the bottom?
airindiana Yeah it was. After we Washing by Sea Water we Washed again by Fresh Water and wait until tomorrow, the Tank Top (flooring) will dry. Thank you for comment.

It couldn't be cleaned with a power washer ? Hand scrubbing seems like lengthening the time needlessly.
San Francisco yeah it should be easy to use but if you use that many hands(man) will assist and it is difficult to use in upper part area. Thanks. 👍🏼
This shows the cleaning processes, but how offten do the holds get a complete sand blast striping , structural mods, rust removal & Proofing aswell as paint job.
Around 5 years sir the ship owners must comply again for dry dock or shipyard.

Hi-pressure washer it doesn’t work especially of the stains of a coal. and if we used it it will takes so much times.

Bro what type of chemical you used for remove the black dust
We don’t use any chemical on here bro we just use a sponge to scrub the dirt much easier for me but it takes time.

The water used is drained into the sea. However, it should be more than 12 nautical miles from the nearest land in accordance to MarPol.

1cargo hold it takes 3days for scour. Then 1day fresh water after 3days for painting and last 1day for bilges around 20days. Almost
For 5holds preparing it for 20 days?
Na try ko lang grains, tapos nag copper concentrate, for cleaning copper, (1hold 1-2days cleaning, including bilges 2-3 days painting around 1week)
For grains, steel coils, 2days maximum of 3days til it dry
owners requested 3 days after petcoke for grain standard
Yes it is some vessel, and we experienced it that too :)

That's the only way to clean and wash the ships' holds ... with a safety belt or a harness is enough ... and you just have to be smart and brave and all the sailors have to do their job ... devido to the structure of the ship's cellar, this is how it has always been done for many years ... and if the work is done by the port workers it is very expensive and in port it is not allowed, so the money is for the crew that does that type of work !! 🚢👏👍

Obviously the ship is in a port, ports have cranes, so set a sky reach JLG in the hold. Cleaning time would be quicker and a lot safer.
Don Pyles Don Pyles hello Sir, that would be great suggestion sir, If the Ship stay in port and if they give us the clearance to Washing a Cargo Hold in their port, some and lets say 80% are not allowed to washed a cargo hold in their port due some residue.
Our ship has Cranes, 4cranes to be exact, but if you Cleaned in Frame Port and Stbs it will conflict because due some Cable Wire scratch in couming, In bulwark,top side (upper hooper) it will be quicker,
But we do that Cleaning in underway so it will be hard to use Crane while underway due some swell and wind. So we have no Choice to do that in that way.

Very unusual to see seafarers work at such high risk without safety harness and moreover with hatches half way open while OS and AB are performing the cleaning sitting on the hatch coaming 🙄 ??? according SOLAS and ISM regulations, this is total defiance and mismanagement against statutory rules 🙄 ????

That is the most inefficient way I've ever seen anything cleaned it must be cheaper to pay people then buy the right equipment

Stupid ,Lower a man lift into the hold and use a pressure washer.What a waste of manpower and time.
Russell Mattingly i respect your opinion. If you lower a man into the hold you will use a Crane, but you can’t use crane while on underway due to swell, or it will use a bosun chair, but using high pressure it takes time and all man it will assist to that man and it is only one high pressure.
If you try this technique all Hands of the man will it use, and it will be much faster, anyway thanks for the comment.
