My Remington 788 Caliber .222 (part 2)

- When I first started my channel, I posted a video featuring my Remington 788 chambered in .222 Rem. In this part two I go over some of the history of both the 788, and the .222 Remington. Then I'll do some shooting to test the performance of both the rifle and cartridge.
I recently picked up the same rifle with a hardwood stock, all original. It still had the filler screws in the action, the old guy who traded it in had bought it new mid 1970's, and shot groundhogs and such with it open sights. I mounted a good scope base/scope and I put a aftermarket trigger on it, and it shoots as tight as yours does. Mine has found a home. The 222 was designed to be accurate, with its long neck to stabilize the bullet during firing. Keep up the great videos.
the reason that the 788s shoot so good most people don't know, they all had Douglas match grade barrels installed on them,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,
Also reported to have the fastest locktime, even today.
Bought a model 788 in 243 for my wife. She took her first deer and pronghorn with it and I have used it to take pronghorn, coyote, prairie dogs, and a host of other game. A friend once told me that the 788 was an embarrassment because it was so accurate, out of the box, and made other rifles look bad by comparison. Have never regretted getting that rifle and also have a 788 in 22-250. GREAT rifles.
You made a great choice in the rifles and cartridges. The 788 did quite a job in giving other rifles a run for their money.
Those are some dandy rifles. I couldn't tell you how many groundhogs me and my buddy shot with his 222
My "first" centerfire rifle in 1976 . Now also have a Remington 722 , Remington 700 Classic , and Winchester 70 Heavy barrel ; all in 222 . FANtastic cartridge . Keep up the good work . I always smile when I see a new video from Cumberland Outdoorsman ;-) IMR4198 and a Sierra #1345 Spitzer are a GR8 combination .

Always wanted a 222 rifle. I have quite a few tude fed 22 WMR, and in 22lr, bolt Marlins by the way, love my Marlins! And they are very accurate rifles and they don’t hurt the pockets to have fun with, or varmint hunt! Sounds like some very Great rifles you’ve got there. Would really love to have a Marlin in this caliber🤔. Great to pass down to the kids to cherish.
My dad had a 788 in 308. I grew up shooting/ hunting with that rifle. . He handed it down to me it was the best shooting rifle I’ve ever owned. It was an absolute tack driver. Sadly it was stolen from me. I would have loved to have been able to hand it down to one of my sons Miss that rifle every time I go hunting. Thanks for the vid
That's too bad. I just cannot understand why anyone would steal from another. I couldn't live with myself. I just saw one chambered in 308 on gunbroker, so maybe you can find one to replace your stolen rifle. So sorry to hear that, maybe it will get recovered by the police.

The 788 in 308 was my first rifle and I still miss it...accurate, reliable and a great deer rifle.
I had one in 7mm 08 it was sub MOA. one of the guns I wish I hadn't sold.

I love some fabulous .222 Remington! A great caliber. Maybe one of the greatest ever. Good shooting and a great looking rifle.
In my opinion it just needs another chance to prove itself, and the only way it can do that is if gun makers would start chambering it again. The .222 is a very capable round, and it deserves that chance. Thanks for the comment.
Excellent video. Nice to see that beautiful Remington triple deuce in action again. Good to hear you paying homage to Mike Walker, a man who did so much for Remington and the shooting sports. Unfortunately I passed on a custom stocked and engraved Remington 788 in .222 REM. Years ago, it was a little out of my reach at the time. Have been keeping an eye out ever since. Good shooting!

My daughter's first deer rifle is in 6 mm rem model 788
I love the Remington model 788 and the 222 Rem caliber may be m favorite of all calibers, I do not own a 222 model 788 but would jump on one if came available, I have a 243 and had a 7-08 I regret selling and the owner refuses to sell it back, what a great Whitetail caliber that was, it shot 3 hole groups I could cover with a dime at 100 yards using Remington's factory 120 grain bullets they had at that time, I still have a box or two of that ammo I hold onto just incase I find another one and would likie a 788 in 308 and 30-30 if I find one
Indeed my friend. The 7mm-08 is in my opinion the perfect balance for most big game use.
I bought a 7mm-08 in college in the early 80's. It has the factory 18.5 inch barrel.
@@mikesal8088 Saw one of those at a gun show about two years ago. I think they were asking $850.00 for it at the time, and it had some scratches and dings, but I'm pretty sure it was chambered in 7mm-08. Those guns sold for around $250.00 when they were new. How time changes things.
Of all the 788’s out there my dream find would be in 7mm-08.
Nice rifle😀i have a 222 rem Sako L461. Just have to comment what you Said about the 222 and Europa.thats spot on. In Skandinavia were i am from this caliber is still going strong. All the big rifle brands like Blaser, Sauer,Sako. Tikka and big good companies like that have rifles in this caliber.

I have had one of these for nearly 50 years. Used it for small game and varmints - love it! Another great powder is IMR 4227; later choice is Hornady’s Varget. The Achilles Heel of the little rifle is its magazine spring. If anyone knows a source for magazines and/or springs, I’d appreciate a response. Thanks and thank you Mr Cumb. outdoorsman.
I have a model 788 in .243 win with a 18 inch brush barrel and as far as I can see a bird on a limb with the scope, I hit it every time, at 100 yards I can almost stack the bullets, mine was $200 in 1980 it has a beach wood stock light color, but I redid it it’s pretty now
I still have my 788 in 222 I think I might take it with me when it's My time. One of my favorites
First Triple 2 I shot was a wood camo stock Remington 788 that a Bush family ranch hand in Florida used for deer. This led to me getting a Remington 700 BDL in Triple 2 in the 1990s. Its a precision killing machine capable of shooting through the same hole at 100 yards with the right hand load for the chamber. 55 grain Nosler Ballistic Tip bullets are outstanding in it and I use the generic Midway brand of them. Reason I went with a 700 rather than a 788 was the internal magazine allows more room for cartridges with longer COLs whereas cartridges for the box mag of the 788 are restricted to the size of the box mag. In any event, thanks goes to Mike Walker.
Great vid. I agree with you on all your Remington reviews. I too, own the same rifles and a 591. Believe it or not ,the 591 is my favorite. With a Weaver V12 , it still is not much heavier than a 581, but packs a lot more punch. I chronographed the semi JHP and it was running just a little over 2500 fps. It is pricey to shoot but still 1/2 the cost of factory 22 hornet. Always look forward to your Remington vids. Doug
I think I can get a box of 50 5mm rounds for $30.00. However since I don't own either a 591 or 592 there's no point in buying any. You are correct in saying it has a lot of punch. More than the .22 magnum.
Great video I have one 222 Caloiber in 788 also. Itis very accurate and very dependable.
Then you would probably agree with me that declaring the .222 Remington obsolete is a bit pre-mature. There are even those outdoor writers on the internet that would call the .222 as being dead. Personally I think that the cartridge is still viable, and there are many rifles like yours and mine out there still doing what the .222 does best.
Very nice 788. I have a walnut stocked 22-250. It's a tack driver. Wish I could one like yours in .222.
I'm sure your 788 in 22-250 is a fine shooter. A 22-250 in a solid platform like that must be like a death ray on varmints!
I have a 788 in 223. Its probably made in birch,nand it was made bon 76 bmy favorite gun by the way.
No matter what kind of wood the stock is of, all 788 rifles were solidly built. The recievers are a massive steel unit, and the bolts fit into them like a vault!

Another great video paying tribute to the Remington 788’s and 580 series guns. I got into the 581’s shortly after I began following your channel. I also have two 788’s, a .243 and a 6mm. I don’t own a .222 but have been on the lookout recently for one. Great shooting, as usual, Tom. Looks like you’ve found a winning recipe for yours.
Great video on a pair of classics! Lots were and maybe still are used a lot for small Fla. and Southeast deer, with great success with careful shooting.
I found 222 pleasant to shoot...the 223 just had that little bit more kick that made it a bit nippy..all things being equal.
The 222Rem is hard to beat. Thanks for the great video on this great round.
I have the 788 in .243 I bought new in high school and my dads old one. Your rifle is 10x nicer than either!
The sierra blitz king 50gr bullets really explode on small varmints, I notice they are more explosive than the vmax 50 gr, I really like them
My best friend had an early production 788 in .222. My first centerfire was a mid-years production 788 in 6mm. It also got me started handloading with Dad and a lee loader (with a dead blow mallet) on the kitchen table. Mom actually put up with that! It was a good shooter as I remember. Unfortunately I sold it to fund a .17 remington model 700. I love my .17 remington but there was no good reason not to keep both. My childhood gun wish list was a .17 rem and a 5mm rem mag. Recently at age 61 I finally got a 5mm and have both. I've often wished you would get a 5mm to review since they are a sister line to the 581's you love. You have just mentioned them in the past so I was excited you actually saw one. But understand your having little need for one. I do stock up on ammo but with only 1 brand and 2 bullet loadings there's not much testing to do find the load it likes best. It is an interesting rimfire!
It would be more tempting to buy one if more manufacturers made 5mm Rem mag. ammo. Perhaps if another gun maker produced a rifle chambered in it, then it would be more likely.
@@CumberlandOutdoorsman I wish CCI would make some ammo but they are linked to the .17 rimfires. I remember passing on a 592 for $125 back in the 80's because of ammo concerns. Still kick myself on that one! Like you said a small centerfire and good .22 rimfire covers all a guy needs and yet .22 magnums and .17 hmr's are wildly popular. There is a niche there for whatever reason. Just the fun of it I guess!
@@emerycreek8016 That's a good observation, and holds alot of merit because the market reflects their popularity.
I've done one of my AR 15s in the 17 Remington so what a great shooter for accuracy using the Shilen barrel.
17 Rem really puts the hurt on Crows and Coyotes .
@@CumberlandOutdoorsman Here in Oregon it is like how many boxes or 5mm Rem you want because so many sporting goods stores have the Mexican Agila and one more brand of 5mm ammo for sale.
What was stupid was when ammo started to flow again a few months ago ammo that was rare was the first to show back in the stores here in the Pacific NW.
Ammo like 25-35 - 5mm - 218 Bee to name a few which wasn't common to see started to be seen when all the other ammo was still scarce.
What also was rare here was 35 Rem and 35 Wheelen ammo that was also rare here now every place it is sold.
That is an absolutely beautiful rifle.
You mentioned this is still being chambered in Tikka and CZ rifles, I do not think CZ is still chambering this in the new model centerfire I think called a model 600, they no longer make the 527 model that was in 222, as for the Tikka I do not know about that, I do have a Sako in 222 but it is older than yiur 788 it was made in the 1950's but not sure when they discontinued those but suspect is available but maybe just geared towards the European market, Hornady and Remington, PPU and S&B still load commercial ammo in this caliber and I buy some every time I find a box
Ah yes, the old 591, 5mm rifle and cartridge. My uncle bought one of these when they first came out, and he loved shooting crows and ground hogs around the county he lived in. Several years ago, I saw a few of these for sale at some really cheap prices, but due to no ammo at the time, I passed up those deals. Now, I wish I had purchased them.

Does your rifle eject the case and hit your windage turret on your scope? I have had a 788 in 308 Winchester, 6mm Remington, and 30-30 Winchester and they all had problems ejecting the case and hitting the scope. Great video!
I have owned AR 15s before Bill Clinton was president so why I say that is for a timeline when I remember a few companies making AR 15s did chamber AR rifles in 222 Rem so I wonder where some of those 222 Rem Chambered ARs are today.
Ruger also long ago cambered some of the Mini 14s in 222 Rem.
I have come to think at times to order a 224" barrel from Pac Nor in a 20-inch AR 15 contour then do an AR 15 in 222Rem.
Chamber reamers for 222 Rem are easy to by from Pacific Tool & Gauge .
Watched whole article no mention of powder type or grain load
The bullet is the Sierra 50 gr. Blitzing pushed by 20 grains of H4198 powder, and a CCI 400 primer.
I have a marlin xs7 in 222rem with a 1:9 twist barrel . Not as pretty as a 788 but it's a shooter. Love the 222 cartridge for its efficiency all round, also have a H&R in 222 Rimmed , fast twist barrel also . Love the video .
@@garrybrischke53 I just got an old Savage 340 in .222 a couple months ago, love it, was going to get it switched to.223 due to ammo, but that problem has been solved.
@@jakeroberts7435Always plenty of. 223. brass and no sweat to reform to .222Rem. I find PPU brass is about the best if the more common brands of brass . I once had a .22 Hornet chambered 340 Savage, good honest rifle .

Hang onto that rifle. It's still a great varmint rifle. A buddy let me use his Remington 788 to shoot a crow out of a tree at about 50 yards and the results were devastating.

Well hunting in West Virginia Mercer county. You go up one mountain and down another mountain and it's so thick. Your average shot is in between 25 and 35 yards. It's too thick to see you 100 yards and I have been hunting for 60 years either white tail or groundhog
