Yes, even with a few flaws, models like this are light years ahead of some of the generic stuff they used to sell, some of which wasn't even really accurate as a generic model. Thanks for watching!
Seems to include a bit more detail than the average R-T-R versions, and I believe the parts bag will dress up the tank (plumbing) more (or had you installed those?). And 21 pin plug, plus speaker box already included, is a plus (I add 5 pts for that). I think Athearn did a great job, EXCEPT for that nose seam. That's rather unfortunate :( I also want to thank you for naming the "popular online retailer" this time ;)
The nose seam is the biggest issue as far as fixing goes, and unfortunately it's been a problem on several recent Athearn SP releases. Maybe they need to re-tool that mold. I decided to just start naming the places where I bought the models because so many people ask anyway. Thanks for watching!
Dear dan you should make a dans model segment of your channel I enjoyed watching you rebuild and detail models I plan on making a lease Unit by converting a conrail engine into a GMTX lease unit I like your videos and enjoy your time on TSG multimedia I always learned something new on your videos so keep me coming.
I mentioned in the review that it had something to do with SP experimenting with new more environmentally friendly paint formulas. This one didn't work so well. Thanks for watching!
In addition to 7319, SP 7354 also had similar paint peeling as did a multitude of SP’s SD45T-2R’s. Still a nice model and I’m wanting to order one. Maybe after the consist build, we’ll see a series on improving 7319. Are you going to use a plug-n-play style decoder or a board style decoder?
I do want to do some work on this engine, so yes, maybe it could be a future video project. I haven't decided about the decoder yet, though I generally prefer to get rid of the factory light boards in most cases since they just take up space. A board style decoder would solve that problem. Thanks for watching!
It would be a pain to fix. I don't really see any good way to do it other than taking the model apart and sanding and repainting that piece. The only good thing is that in most of the photos I've seen of 7319, the nose is just gray and red with no peeling paint, so at least it's just a two-color job and not three. Thanks for watching!
I always liked the Southern black paint scheme with the white stripe. I've cut back on doing reviews so no promises. I have to be a little more careful with my purchases these days, and save some budget for the layout, too. Thanks for watching!
well presented review. only thing i think you could of added was the photos you found of the real thing. you bring the fact up. so why not add 30 seconds to the video and show them. even side by side be good. looks like a model i would like to get. and can be used as a lease unit for a short line.
The reason I didn't include photos is that I don't have any that I took myself, and there are potential copyright issues with using other people's photos. Thanks for watching!
I just found a picture of the rear of 7319 and it looks to have the large rectangular plate. espee.railfan.net/nonindex/sd40r_photos/7319b_sp-sd40r-dave_henry.jpg
Looked up some photos of this engine and it appears Athearn went for how the engine looked from this photo from 1991 www.rrpicturearchives.net/showPicture.aspx?id=192951
I hadn't found that photo, so thanks for the link. It does look closer to that one than some of the other photos I found. Still missing some paint in the step wells, but like I said in the review, it could have changed daily as more paint flaked off. Thanks for watching!
I got this loco too and love a lot. Athearn added to RTR etched wipers, LEDs and rubber MU hoses. I made a review too: ua-cam.com/video/1xOX_Mne3Es/v-deo.html
I picked up a sp sd40r #7319 with Dcc/Sound the other day from my local train shop it’s a awesome locomotive model, ty dan for your review!
You're welcome. Thanks for watching!
I don’t need it, I definitely don’t need it..................... I NEED IT!!!!
Haha. We all need just one more, right? Thanks for watching!
Another nice review Dan,,,It still amazes me on how far model railroading has come, over the years.

Well done. That is one serious paint job !!
Thanks for watching!
I detect several steps up in throughness. Excellent job. This unit is out of my date range, however I still enjoyed it.;
I have a lot of SP reference material and it's one of my main railroads of interest so I did a lot of research on this one. Thanks for watching!
Nice. As always, a true, honest and complete product review. Thanks for sharing. 🚂

I may do something like that in the future. Thanks for the suggestion and for watching!
that paint got me wondering, how did that happened. Great review always Dan
I mentioned in the review that it had something to do with SP experimenting with new more environmentally friendly paint formulas. This one didn't work so well. Thanks for watching!
Nice, more than worth the price paid 👌
It's worth it to me for the paint job, which would be difficult to do from scratch. Thanks for watching!
I like SD40s but not sure this paint scheme is for me--another great review Dan thanks!!!
I tend to like the non-peeling SP engines better, but I couldn't resist this one and it fits perfectly into my era. Thanks for watching!
Great review Dan!
Thanks for watching!
Great review!

That would be an awesome locomotive to find in n scale!
It would be for sure! Thanks for watching!
Hi Dan; do you sell any of the locomotives you've weathered and detailed?
No, I do them for my own enjoyment. Thanks for watching!
If this were mine I would fix the details athearn missed
im with you on this! bring back kits so I can detail it and paint MY WAY!
Yes, it definitely could be improved. Thanks for watching!
That Nose is a 50 Pointer :( The Prior release SP versions did Not have this issue, I have #7372 and it's fine.

You should review the sou sd40 3170 series

They Has the same problem with some Kodak Chrome unit's, and some Rebuilt SD45T-2S #6800'S.
Yes I've seen photos of the rebuilt tunnel motors that have that issue, too. Thanks for watching!
I definitely liekthe paint job on this one!
It definitely stands out. Thanks for watching!
cool attempt but the tan is way too clean........some dirty powder brushing would help
Yes, this one definitely needs to be weathered. Thanks for watching!

@@DanielCortopassi and thank you for being a cool dude lol
I got to hold one in my hands but my wife wouldn’t let me take one home I so want one and the new tunnel motors
I hope you get them both! Thanks for watching!
What does the r stand for?
R stands for ''REBUILD''.
Yes, "R" was SP's code for rebuilt locomotives. Also sometimes "E". Thanks for watching!
It was an sd40 then rebuilt for dash 2 specs
I just found a picture of the rear of 7319 and it looks to have the large rectangular plate.

It does look kind of like that. I wish the photo was a little bit bigger. Thanks for sharing the photo!
