    Had this piriformis problem for about two mos. Used the massage gun here and there lighly. Not nothing crazy
    Then one nite last week b4 bed, I went extra heavy with the gun and longer! Thought it couldn't hurt. BUT. it did. The pain was maybe 5X worse than ever. The Easter weekend was toast! That Saturday and Sunday I could not walk. It was crazy!! Monday I was able to gently move around. Now I understand why the gun caused more pain.
    No more gun! Thank you for this video! 🥰

    Can we assume the same for using a TENS? I mean not to block pain but to stimulate the nerve?

    I get tingling and pain pretty much every day for 10 months. Sitting long time brings it on, also I can no longer sit up in bed, the tingling comes on really quickly.

      Hey Claire- sorry to hear- what are you doing for treatment??

  • @allisoncornell5823

    With the self tests, I'm always second guessing myself. I feel like there was a nerve issue slightly, but then again, I couldn't even do the full leg raise with my good leg! Then I thought my bad leg was slightly higher than the other on the figure 4 test...but only a little...not enough to be certain...they were fairly close. Not sure if that's just me not wanting it to be a nerve problem (or herniated disc) and that just clouding my results or not. Unfortunately, I am an overthinker, so that gets me into trouble!

    • @drcharliejohnson
      @drcharliejohnson  Рік тому +1

      hey Allison! don’t overthink it. should be very obvious.. either leg raise is clearly limited and painful- or it’s not… and if fairly close with figure 4- call it “same”
      make sense?
      what are you currently doing for treatment?

      @@drcharliejohnson Hi Dr. Charlie! I started seeing a chiropractor who told me my butt/leg pain was probably a herniated disc but after going a few times, he told me my SI joint was out of place and popped me back in and my excruciating pain subdsided to where I only have a lot of pain intermittently like when I'm sitting for more than a few minutes or it's been a while since I took pain killers. He also was guessing that my SI joint may have caused some piriformis issues as my glute was "on fire" so he said. I'm away right now and can't see my chiro so I started looking online for help with SI, piriformis, and disc problems since I'm not sure which issue I have or maybe I have them all! I started the clamshell exercises I saw you recommend, but that's been mostly it so far. I do ice and heat and tried the massage gun, but after watching your video on it, I stopped...I don't really think it helped, anyway, which would make sense after watching your video. I have a 16 hour drive ahead of me to get home and am desperate to not cry in pain all the way. Thanks for all your help!!!

      @allisoncornell5823 Рік тому +2

      I just tried that leg raise again and although it wasn't too bad while I was doing it, afterwards I started to get the pain from my butt to my knee (underneath) and my leg tingled down to my foot (which happens ever time I squat to stand or sit to stand...so I'm thinking that's a positive test!

    thank you for the video very well structured and explained. The nerve and muscle test where both positive. I've been stretching regularly for more than two months for the front splits and I did not see an improvement I can't even sit on the floor with a straight back I now think it's the nerve that's causing my problems, sometimes I get pain in the front upper thigh. How to improve nerve mobility?

    • @drcharliejohnson
      @drcharliejohnson  Рік тому +1

      Hey! thanks for watching. Sorry to hear. Do not need to improve nerve "mobility"... nerves don't lengthen or shorten (they are not a contractile tissue. That being said, how do you reduce sensitivity to motion? Step 1- reduce irritation... stop stretching it.
      Beyond that- hard to tell. Are you open to some help? No pressure, but would love to review your case and see if/how I can help- Apply here if you're interested- www.drcharliejohnsonpt.com/apply

    I watched Bob & Brads video about using massage gun for piriformis, for me its interesting to see peoples comments to see if they have used and what its done for them, after watching the video, I only saw 1 person who said it made it worse, because they used it in a strong way. But everyone else said the massage gun, gave the some relief

    • @drcharliejohnson
      @drcharliejohnson  Місяць тому +1

      Sure- you'll see mixed results. Most everyone WILL get some relief... but it will be temporary- not the permanent fix. So then the question becomes is which would you prefer... short term relief that keeps coming back... or a more permanent solution?

    • @DeeDee-2
      @DeeDee-2 Місяць тому

      @@drcharliejohnson both actually, I know it takes time to go, but living with it when there is not much room to think about other things apart from pain, gets depressing, so it’s good to get some short term relief. I’ve had it for 9 weeks, it’s tough, I have disc bulge and piraformis, but not sure what is pinching the nerve, personally I feel it’s piraformis.

    Identified my issue as piriformis. One question
    ..how much pressure to apply on the muscle with the gun. Im using the bullet point at a low setting numer 2 on sharper image gun. Thanx

    • @drcharliejohnson
      @drcharliejohnson  Рік тому

      Test- treat- retest. Start small (think, measure twice cut once).. you can always go more... but doing more and then ticking things off makes it difficult to undo.

  • @monBon100

    What about using the gun on your lower back to treat a stiff back in the morning that is contributing to your sciatica/nerve pain? Thanks!!

    • @drcharliejohnson
      @drcharliejohnson  Рік тому

      Hey! I generally don't recommend this... as in my experience it continues to aggravate the issue and creates more hypervigilence around the pain.
      Would you be open to potentially working together? Sounds like you could use some direction. No pressure- but let me know!
      Thanks!

    What if you have a tight muscle and nerve pain then can you massage gun?

    • @drcharliejohnson
      @drcharliejohnson  Рік тому +2

      Hey! Chances are the “tightness” you feel in the muscle is due to a sensitive nerve. Nerves love blood flow. Compression via a massage gun compresses and sensitizes nerves- Reducing blood supply and oxygen needed for recovery

      @@drcharliejohnson yeah thanks that makes sense. It’s my nerve tension that is really tight I cannot straighten my led then sitting in a chair and even have tight Achilles aswell. I have realised my hips are reallly tight and my pirifimous muscle is very tender. Been doing some never glides lying down and this has reduced the tightness on my Achilles heel. But my goal is to be able to straighten my leg whilst sitting in a chair which I cannot nearly do. If I try push it it just inflames. Do you have any suggestions? On my next move ? I ended up on this video as I thought massager might loosen my hips but what you saying makes sense and it doesn’t feel good when rubbing it with my hand hard? Please any advice would be really great full.
