John, do you remember when you wanted to be as excited about anything as Cheese Doodles guy was about Cheese Doodles? AFC Wimbledon, in all their glory, have delivered. :)
YYYYAAAAAAAARRRRRRRR!!!!!!!!
Pirate John?!? Finally!
I can't wait to go to all their matches when I move down to London for uni this autumn
Yes, they have. Even I - who has never previously had an interest in English football despite being British - was as excited as cheez doodles guy being in that stadium with the thousands of AFC Wimbledon fans and you're It was glorious.
SPOT ON YAAAARRRRHHH!
oh my god that last moment was weird, John all outgoing and loud :D
I'm so proud of him for it though!
He's large, he contains multidudes. ;)
It was so cool
I've never cared about sports in my life UNTIL WIMBLEDON. This video made me so happy!
I'm not sure I've made a positive or negative impact in your life. But for today it is wonderful! -John
John, you're one of the most positive influences in my life. Thank you. ☺
John because of you I decided to watch and bet on my first football match, not only did you bring me joy but also profit!
SAAAAAAMR
Saaaaaame
He was so excited to cheer for AFC Wimbledon he even forgot to say "i'll see you on friday" ;)
I didnt notice :0
+Bela Mielczarski NO ONE DID THEY WON
Is that a punishment? XD
+Corey Lando CAN WE GET AN OFFICIAL TO CHECK???
+Corey Lando Hank's done it before and it wasn't punished so, no?
I love how John, a super introvert, suddenly starts to scream "we are going up" and everyone joins in and sings together.
Yesterday was epic!
Why is this so exciting? I couldn't care less about English Football Leagues but I'm really happy for AFC Wimbledon. I guess the enthusiasm is infectious.
As it is so often the case, it is not the sport that matters, but the fate and values of the people that play and support the sport. So, essentially, what you are experiencing is empathy.
It's subjectively exciting to John (and a lot of Nerdfighteria) since we're invested in the team for an array of reasons.
It's objectively exciting since English football is usually dominated by older, wealthier clubs, and AFC Wimbledon is neither of those.
(Preamble: There are many "leagues" of varying prestige and publicity in English football; the best three teams over the course of each season get promoted to a "better" league, whereas the worst three teams get demoted. Predictably, more funding/publicity/etc. is pooled in the upper leagues.)
Wimbledon is a relatively underfunded club, with the smallest budget and resources of any team in their league, and was only formed 14 years ago to play in a lil' regional league; them consistently playing so well over 40+ games this year and being promoted to a more prestigious league was a real long shot, and makes for their sixth promotion in ten years. This evokes an even bigger response from supporters since their team is largely community-owned (most English football clubs are more privately-owned), so it feels even more like a community victory.
There's another layer to this - the team that previously played out of Wimbledon was bought out by a billionaire-type and relocated elsewhere, which is why the current Wimbledon team is so new. That previous team (the MK Dons) plays in the same league that current-Wimbledon just got promoted to, so now Old Wimbledon will be playing matches against New Wimbledon. Bit of a rivalry there.
+MUFCgg I would like to point out that the guy was not American
I feel like John's enthusiasm could get me to like anything.
+MUFCgg It was 2 norwegians that moved the club, they tried to move wimbledon to dublin but were denied, then they moved them to milton keynes.
I'm actually crying right now. John, why have you made me care so about a football team?
I feel completely the same! I was really gutted I couldn't be there... and I hate football!!!
+atomicmrpelly me too!!!
As an AFC Wimbledon fan, I am so grateful of what you did for our club.
I've never been so happy for a football team promotion in my life...
P.S I love these vlog style videos, you guys should definitely do more.
Usually my life is more boring than this :) -John
There's an old proverb that says "There is no pleasure without pain."
Perhaps "There is no excitement without boredom." is also true.
HE"S BIG, HE'S ROUND, HE'S WORTH 10 MILLION POUNDS, ACKENFENWAAAAAA! ACKENFENWAAAAAAA!!!!!
I love John's pure, unadulterated joy in the last frame. I feel you, fellow Womble, I feel you.
it makes me so happy when John is happy
John's happy face makes everything better 💜
I cried happy tears while watching this video. It feels so good to see so many people being united by their football passion. Incredibly happy for AFC Wimbledon and John!
awww I have also cried a lot of happy tears in the last few hours! -John
+vlogbrothers I think if your tweets from the last couple of days were written on paper, that paper would definitely be tear stained
John's constant mentions of AFC Wimbledon and this play off actually got me to watch the match online live. Me, who has never cared about sports before! And I was so excited when the Don's won! Hollywood-like episode to AFC Wimbledon's journey!
I'm pretty sure the already planned Dons movie is going to make me so emotional. We're going to be able to rewatch that win. This is like the football version of Miracle.
Same! I had more fun yesterday alone in my basement than I've had at any past Superbowl Party 😂 Up the Dons!
One of my favorite things on this Earth is John Green's undying enthusiasm for AFC Wimbledon.
I second this!!
WE'VE GOT SOME EXCITING DEAR HANK AND JOHN NEWS THIS WEEK
I wonder if, for the first time ever, Hank will let John tell his news at the beginning of the podcast.
+Edi Pop Now that would just be ludicrous.
Madelyn Mackintosh I don't know what I was thinking, I'm pretty sure society would collapse.
Well, John will be so thrilled the whole time, it'll be pretty obvious.
Not sure how much dubious advice this week!!
john gets cheez doodles guy excited!
OMG yes! John has finally reached his goal of being as truly joyful as cheez doodles guy for once in his life. Congrats John and congrats to AFC Wimbledon. It was a great game.
I've never enjoyed football before in my life but I was screaming at the telly watching that match. Huge huge congratulations to Wimbledon, and thank you John for telling us all their story
You realize you're now stuck with this for life, Holly. You're a Womble! -John
+vlogbrothers underground overground wombling freee
It was so great to be there!! Thanks for the ticket, John! What a win!
So glad you got to go! -John
I'm a Plymouth Argyle fan, but I gotta say AFC Wimbeldon definitely deserved to win :)
Yeah, I'm really sorry. The Plymouth fans were so supportive, and everyone I met was very generous. My condolences; hope to see you in League One next year! -John
Yes definetly :) we wish you guys all the best in League One!!
Sorry but we won't see Plymouth in the 17/18 season... because we'll be in the Championship!
Looking forward to seeing AFC Wimbledon fight for a spot in Championship League in the coming years!
I'm an Argyle fan as well and I was at the game. Gotta say it was a pretty dull one. We never looked like we were going to score. Oh well.
Hey John, I was in the other half of the stadium, you guys deserved it, we had the possession but did nothing with it and you made the most of the chances you got. I'm genuinely glad for you as it'll be good for you to square up against MK Dons next season! Much love from the Green Army :)
next season we will do it, GREEN ARMY!
Seeing John so happy makes me so happy
Seeing so many people in the comments so happy about John being so happy makes me so happy. :)
Oh my god I love this. The energy of thousands of people all uniting towards a cause is so contagious and enthralling
I started following this epic journey in the podcast and I can't imagine a better ending. I have no idea how any of it works, except the basics (kick ball in net), and yet I found myself grinning and I actually yelled when the penalty kick went in. So excited for all those involved in the team!
Your comment pretty much sums up my feelings too. I'm happy because John is so happy :) That moment at the end when he started up the chant was so beautiful - you can see how much it means to him!!
John's happiness in this video makes me so happy
I'm not really in to sports but seeing all that people happy makes me happy
John's smile at the end is what made me add this video to my favorites. It reminds me of the scene of David Foster Wallace dancing at the end of "End of the Tour"-- a genius who gets lost in his own head finding a way to just be genuinely, uncomplicated-ly happy for a moment.
his smile at the end
I don't know anything about English football, and yet inexplicably I'm thrilled about a lower tier football team gaining promotion. It's so wonderful to see you so happy John.
I know nothing about football, but I loved seeing everyone (especially John) truly happy and enjoying themselves. Found myself smiling. :)
Your joy is absolutely contagious John! Thanks for sharing it with us!
I have never been so excited about a sport than in that moment
I should follow that up by saying I've never been excited for a sport at all before.
I've felt exactly the same!! I even went out for a pint to celebrate their victory afterwards!!! Not something I thought I'd EVER do last year...
Oh my have you been missing out. The narratives, the communities, the highs and the lows, the hype and the tension! Its so brilliant how humans can generate so much feels around such "pointless" activities.
That closing grin sums up the joy of a shared goals and shared love.
No matter the goal, or the love, there is something unavoidably human, beautiful, and painful about the endeavour... and hell, even about the success.
Congratulations to The Dons!
Thank you for the ticket! It was a day I'll never forget!
I'm so glad you were able to go! -John
It's johns fatherly smile at the end as if he has just watched his child say dad for the first time but no, it's his football team moving up in the table. Priceless 👌🏼
i am so happy right now
i've never been interested in football before, but i am now
It's always the stories and human destinies that make a sport interesting...much more than the sport itself.
+Demian Haki Actually I prefer to think its all the times some one takes a ball to the face, chest or groin. But to each his own.
What I so love about the English series are the chants. And how easily one starts at the end, man. That's just so neat.
This was so delightfully positive.
John's happiness in this video just brought such a big smile to my face. GO AFC WIMBLEDON!!!
HE LOOKS SO ADORABLE AND HAPPY OMG
I'm crying and I'm laughing and I have never been so happy about the result of a football match before in my life, I don't know how you do this to me, John. I'm so emotional now ahh it's so lovely to see you so happy. I love that you filmed the father & son and the crowd's reaction rather than the pitch- after all Wimbledon is all about the fans. This is a lovely example of what happens when you have hope! Ah hope, that thing with feathers who never asked a crumb of us. Up the DONs and up hope and up being unironically enthusiastic about the things that make us happy. DFTBA, John and congrats to AFC Wimbledon on now being a THIRD tier English soccer team!
The smile of his in the last frame just makes me smile :)
I was just about to comment this again! Thanks past-me, for already having done that. Gosh, we're so alike. XD
this video is pure happiness. I'm saving this for when I feel down.
his sheer happiness makes me happy too
John's smile at the end makes my heart smile.
Hope is the thing with feathers!
It's really such a gift to be able to watch a very happy day in someone's life. I can feel the joy through the computer screen. Thank you so much for sharing, John - truly.
Everything is beautiful and nothing hurts.
John Green in his happiest form. What a beautiful life. So much love for vlog brothers & Nerdfighteria! Love you all!!!
The world is always so poetic through John's eyes, and I love it.
I don't think I've seen John so genuinely excited before! I kind of love it!
Ever since I found out AFC Wimbledon is being promoted I couldn't wait to see johns very happy video about it. That smile at the end alone was well worth it (:
Thank you John for making Nerd Fighters care about a 4th English Football team. And subsequently enjoying the teams victory this day in history. You enthusiasm is infectious!
Thanks to you, John, I actually feel myself caring about soccer, at least a little. Especially because AFC Wimbledon's story is really inspiring. Not sure if it will ever become a movie, but it definitely should!
Pretty sure John pitched it and was accepted by Fox or something. There will be a AFC Wimbledon movie.
Nah there are still a lot of reasons it might not become a movie. Budgets and directors and all sorts.
I mean, I hope it does, but just because the deal is done, it is not necessarily a done deal.
ThatWouldBeCareless ok its in the works.
best day ever. can't believe i almost missed it. thanks for encouraging me to try something new, john.
The pure joy and happiness on your face is refreshing, glad you had such a great day and that was a great game!!
He looks so happy at the end. I've watched this video three times, and I've teared up three times. I love him so much.
I have never care about football (English or American) in my whole life, yet I cried when I heard that Wimbledon was being promoted and I cried again watching this video. John, your passion for this team has overflowed and spilled into the lives of all of Nerdfighteria. DFTBA.
My heart exploded for you, John, when I saw Wimbly went all the way!
Thanks for giving me a favorite football team that I will never be able to visit John. So happy for you!!!
You never know; life might surprise you. If you find yourself in London, don't miss Wimbledon! (Plus you can always follow along via Internet radio/twitter.) -John
true :) can't give up.
vlogbrothers Wimbledon has really good tennis, too! Well-known for that!
I have never seen John look so happy. I'm glad you had this experience, John. You never FTBA.
Wow! I can't believe how happy John looks!
I could care less about sports but it makes me overjoyed to see so many people so happy, especially you John! Congrats!
I love how happy AFC Wimbledon makes John. We should all be this happy about something.
Geez, all I did was watch Netflix today.
I literally have never cared about football (of any kind) but I smiled the whole way through watching this video. And then I watched it again and smiled the whole way through a second time. This is amazing!!!
That last moment, so cute! XD
So happy for you, John! I don't care about football otherwise. That short documentary you did for them was awesome too and so glad that Meridith was there!
For the first time ever in my time, BBC radio mentioned AFC Wimbledon in depth. It was cool.
My knowledge of sports is pretty much at zero, but that enthusiasm is beautiful. There is something special about watching other people experience joy.
Such genuine happiness in this video! It lights me up with joy to see people experience that level of happy, most of all people from Nerfighteria. DFtbA!
I literally got chills watching this!! I am so happy for everyone involved!!
And happiness radiated throughout the land!
I'm not huge into sports, but seeing John enjoy this insanely long day as much as he did made me really happy. So cool to see people get excitied about things.
you haven't experienced true British culture until you've been to a football match
And this match just happened to be my first to witness live. I have now evolved and become truly British after 20 years.
Even America says that, though they're generally talking about American (gridiron) football.
@Geoff Nattrass wtf are you on about? are you okat mate
That is the biggest smile on your face!! Congrats to AFC Wimbledon!
Couldn't care less about football and I don't know what going up to league 1 means but this made me really happy to watch! Congrats to AFC Wimbledon
This is like the best thing ever!!! I haven't ever seen John so happy!
I very rarely comment on the vlog brothers BUT, the video was just AWESOME !!!!!! Indy 500 and AFC Wimbleton in less than 48 hours. WOW !!!!!!!
I have absolutely zero interest in any sport, but John's excitement and happiness derived from AFC Wimbledon honestly puts the largest smile on my face. Congrats on your most amazing day John!
I couldn't stop smiling for the entirety of this video. I'm so happy that AFC Wimbledon is moving to league one!
I think the last half second of that video was the best half second of vlogbrothers. I've never seen such genuine happiness.
The fans happiness at the end of the video makes me so happy 🙃
That smile at the end might just be the most adorable thing I've ever seen. Happy John Green - cuter than puppies. :)
I was too invested. What has the podcast done too me?
I know! I became super attached to this team and I believe the podcast is to blame.
+Grace Fairchild I'm confused. What's the podcast
+Lewis Davey The Dear Hank and John podcast features news from AFC Wimbledon (presented by John), and I think a lot of us really came to know the Dons through the podcast. You definitely should listen to it sometime!
+Grace Fairchild it's cAlled dEar joHn And hanK
That was so fabulous, John. Thanks for letting us be a part of your experience. I'm a huge soccer fan and my Portland Timbers won the league last year, but I wasn't lucky enough to travel to the championship game. Watching this video gave me a little taste of what I imagine it was like.
John looks so freaking satisfied at the end for started that cheer haha!
One of my very favorite things in this brief and endless consciousness is John Green's excitement and happiness.
the chant thing at the end was so happy and cute and innoceny :'3
I've never followed English football before this season but I definitely cried happy tears during this video. At work. This made me cry at work.
Both Craig and Wimbleton were underdogs.... and they both won!
I have never been known to care about Soccer/Football before, and never have sports distracted me from a day at Disney World. So my husband was INCREDIBLY confused yesterday when I spent part of our afternoon at Epcot checking the score of the game, and chatting about it with a friend who was also following the game. Thanks to you John, I have a new sport to follow and a new team to root for! Congrats to the Dons!
you guys have akinfenwa playing for you ? that's awesome he s the strongest player in the entire english football !!
He's the strongest player in the world.
Did you not know?
he is a literal tank, I was there at the game and i could not believe what I was seeing when he came on
A`s a big lad.
I got goosebumps during the game. You could feel the energy from the crowd through your camera. I can only imagine what it must be like to actually be there, and be so invested in the game.
Well, this will be an excellent Dear Hank and John!
The best thing about reading these comments is looking at that last frame over it all. A 3rd tier English football team and a smile just put some joy into a very tough week for me. Thanks for sharing your smile, John.
Why am I so happy that a person I've never met is so happy? The Internet is weird
Same- the universe is weird
I care about AFC Wimbledon more than i should. Because I see you get so excited about something you are so passionate about. I am happy for you John!
What have you done John, you made me clasp my hands to my face in suspense and then I cried happy tears.... about an English football club?!?! How has this happened?! Ah well, WOO AFC WIMBLEDON!!
