  • Join me, Mats, and Christophe on our 4 day kayak tour in the northernmost parts of beautiful Stockholm Archipelago.
Most of the footage is shot using GoPro's Chesty mount giving you a FPV experience so you can almost 'relive' our trip sitting comfortably at home.
The weather was a bit unsteady during the whole trip and thunderstorms were nearby everyday. On day 3 we rendezvoused with two good friends on Idö and paddled together around Arholma islands before wild-camping on Villösa island where we had a splendid view over Havssvalget and Ålandshav. Next morning after breakfast we split up again and continued on our journey north to Sandviken on Väddö island where we were picked up in the evening.
You can follow our trip on the following interactive map (pan, zoom, choose map type seachart/satellite/map/hybride).
    kartor.eniro.s...
    0:12 Day 1 - 27 km (17 miles) Rådmansö - Inra Hamnskär
    9:46 Day 2 - 20 km (12 miles) Inra Hamnskär - Södra Ramskobben - Vattungarna
23:13 Day 3 - 17 km (11 miles) Vattungarna - Idö - Villösa (Day 3 title says 'Idskär' instead of 'Idö')
    32:01 Day 4 - 26 km (16 miles) Villösa - Sandviken (Väddö)
    4 day total 90 km (56 miles)

How is the weather in the midst of september around Stockholm? Because I'm thinking about a tour during that time.

I wish I could give you a straight answer but to be honest the weather varies quite a bit especially when getting into September and onwards. The gulf stream gives us a much more moderate climate than what is normal for this latitude, i.e. we are happy we don't have northern Canada's or Siberia's climate here. The downside though is that the gulf stream brings us many weather systems our way. Climate change has also affected us and we don't have calm weather as often as in the past.
Having said that, I would say that if you are lucky can kayaking in September in Stockholm be very nice, with fewer boats out there, heather blooming on islands, starry nights and water temperatures still above 15°C. The downsides are increasing winds, shorter daylight. If possible, I suggest that you set aside a few extra days in Stockholm and follow the weather forecast and choose the best period during your stay for kayaking. The other days you can get acquainted with Stockholm or do day trips to avoid having to camp when the weather is bad.
One positive attribute of Stockholm Archipelago though is that there is all types of paddling available from very sheltered waters to very open sea conditions. The archipelago exists of many smaller archipelagos so often you can sneak around in one archipelago during a windy day and continue to another archipelago when the weather is better.
I don't know if that is of any help, but hopefully you got something out of it!

Tack så mycket! Jo, vi har ett antal jätte fina skärgårdar. Kanske inte alltid lika dramatiskt natur som i norge men lite enklare att paddla i då vi saknar tidvatten, strömmar och saltvatten (iaf på ostkusten).

Very nice trip, thanks for uploading. How do you "mount" your camera? GoPro? BR..

Thanks, glad you liked it! I used GoPro’s ’Chesty’ mount for all the on-water footage. Since it has elastic bands I can pull it away from my chest without unmounting my GoPro and point it in any direction. This allows be to make nice side views gliding past an island or film my buddy behind me. The combo Chesty + voice control + hyper-stabilsation is great when kayaking! But it is easy to forget to keep the lens free from water drops and clothing/pfd which can be seen especially in the day 1 footage. See the description for more info and a map of our route.

@@mfred2 Ok, i see (do have that chesty-thing also, but never tried it with swimming-vest on kajak, will give it a try (maybe go for the headmount-strap also) An concerning the water, drops and such - hey, one's on the water - it's only logic ;) - Thanks

@@sim-sam I prefer a chest mount over a headcount-strap any day since I have seen far too many UA-cam videos where the person is constantly looking one way and a couple of seconds later looking the other way i.e. a very annoying quick panning! I don't think I would be able to keep my head still very long as I constantly take in my surroundings. But, you might have better luck with it. Post-editing can of course remove the quick-panning but there has to be long enough clips to work with.

@@mfred2 Yap, you have a point there with the head-movements. I think I will experiment what gives the best footage... thanks also for the "Weather-basics" below, thinking about a tour next year - br.

Very great trip and the photography, video and music are spectacular as well as usual! I’m so jealous. Thank you for the ‘tour’ of a new area of paddling; the miles you always manage to cover are really quite extensive for a day after day set of goals. I think I would need a tow for that many miles….LOL! Of course it must be beer:30 pm! 🍻

Thanks Paul for the 🍺 and appreciation 🙏! Well I’m still hoping to be your kayak guide next summer so you can experience it all yourself. I’ll be sure to bring my towrope 😉

Regarding the distance we paddle, it’s really not that much and distance is never a goal. Typically sea-kayakers paddle about 6 km/h but if you add room for short stops to drink or discuss choice of route we assume we paddle 5 km/h which happens to correspond to the 2cm grid size on our 1:50000 scale maps. So it is easy to predict time just counting how many squares = number of hours. On average we paddle 20-25 km/day which means we are paddling 4-5 hours in whole day. That leaves ample room for lunch & fika stops. Paddling amongst islands is so rewarding that time just flies. We have no tides nor currents which makes everything easier.
